I was wondering if you might be able to identify what insect or spider bit me. I’ve never had a bite like this before. I’m located in Rock Hill SC near Charlotte NC. It could be nothing, but judging by some of the “Days Later” photos on your site, I’d rather be safe than sorry.

    Thank you so much!

I just had a bed bug guy check out place and he said 99% sure no bedbugs. So, it must be a spider I would guess. I was wondering what you thought. We did find little webs on a lot of the stucco like ceiling, sort of very translucent funnel ones that were hard to see but looked more like dust unless you were right up in ceiling saw they were funnel shaped but less than 2 inches. We also have some brown spots on the baseboard heater the inspector said were way too big to be from bed bugs.

Listing you put on bedbug site and wondering if can also ask on spider site or if you have advice:

Hi, any help would be so appreciated as to what type of bite it likely is and how to address issue. So scared to sleep at moment. The bites I have are shown below, from Wednesday to Friday which is also similar to hobo bites I saw online.

A week after moving in to our fancy new Vancouver place in early Feb I had a bite one bite on my arm and the next day one on my wrist. Both welted up huge radius with a central blister that eventually oozed, scabbed and scared by 3rd week. Pretty bad. Then, a month of no bites and now a set of 4 on my hand so bad this time with 4 in one spot my whole hand swelled up and had to go to expensive clinic. It is important to note I have ALWAYS had a crazy immune response to even just mosquito.
They presented as just an unnoticeable itch Monday, then Tuesday swelled up and itched so much by Wednesday I went to the doctor as I thought I saw a red streak up arm and was sure it was a spider bite.

At first the doctor said it was a hand infection and that I MUST start clindamycin ASAP or risk needing IV drugs. So, I went home in tears (b/c of issues for other condition i have) and started antibiotic (took 3 doses) but read more online about issues it had for my other condition and really doubted and infection so I saw another doctor on Thursday who said it was totally a histamine reaction to a bite – total opposite of first Doctor! She said it was histamine only and to stop the antibiotic and antihistamine which immediately helped swelling go down and now swelling almost gone except for four clear blisters surrounded by red remains, but thank God the horrendous itching is gone. I Am putting neosporin on it now.

Originally, I was sure it was a spider as I thought bed bug bites were always tiny, but as I react so badly to mosquito bites, I now am wondering. I found this site with a pic of someone who overreacted to the bed bug bites and it looks just like my 4 bites on my hand Reaction to bed bug bites and note that Vancouver now has an epidemic of bed bugs even in the fanciest of places – ugh. I am just terrified of getting more than a few bites as my system could shut down after seeing what 4 did!

After looking online I went back in room and noticed brown paint like drops on our baseboard heater I remember noticing when we moved in. After reading, it looks like it could be bed bug excrement. I then found it on a bag my boyfriend had under the bed. Then, found some blood under covers so am thinking bed bugs (ugh!) but would love anyone’s advice. Also, my boyfriend had 2 little red marks on his chest today which look like normal bed bug bites.

I called a thermal exterminator and a regular one but am worried about chemicals and cost but currently scared to sleep in own bed! Please advise if you can! thanks so much!

hi my son has these bites on his legs for about 2 weeks now its mostly on one leg about 7 bites then 2 on the either leg and one on his arm he hasn’t gotten anymore. but they are taking quite a while to heal. he is 22 months old and he sleeps in bed with my husband and i and neither of us have been bite by anything. i thought they were flea bites at first because that’s how i react to them. but no one else has been bite by anything. i attached two pics of the ones on his legs they look a little better but when he first got them they look like a welt that is flat on the top and hard to the touch there was a pink/red center now that they are healing they are peeling.

Today at work I felt a itch by my Knee, started scratching so I picked up my pant and found swollen skin if tho an had ant bit me, I did not feel any sting. Minutes later My feet started itching and then my hands. Got home and my wife cut a small garlic and rubbed it on the area and for the itching I used alcohol The garlic did help to reduce the swollen. Did not find out what bit me, But I think it was a Spider.

Have two, one on chest and one starting on back. Don’t know if it’s ringworm or bites. Really itchy and the dark red one on my chest burns. Treating with Lamasil for 4 days on front and 2 days on back (today is 4/2/09). Any similarities to others pics?

I am 6 months pregnant and think I may have a spider bite. I have had one before with literally no symptoms, despite the black ball that was inside my back. Last Friday I started to have severe back pain. I had a fever and nauseau that later lead to sickenss. I had the chills and had the shakes for two days. I haven’t had the chills and the shakes since last weekend. I’ve had nausea and still had the severe back pain. I went to the ER for the back pain and they said I was dehydrated, but I drink water and the back pain has not subsided. I didn’t notice the bite until recently. I had itchiness over that weekend on the site of bite (on my buttox) but I just thought it was a mosquito bite. After studying it in the mirror last night because the itchiness hasn’t stopped, I noticed the raised bump and two red marks on the bump.

Does anyone have any advice??? Please????

I’m not sure what bit my ankle or when but it began to swell Monday and then Tuesday it started coming down. That’s when the clear secretions began to evacuate the wound. Any info you have will be greatly appreciated.

Hello, My name is Alex, I had this spider bite over a week ago. I woke up and noticed this lump on my left arm right next to my shoulder and armpit. It was half it’s size when I just noticed it, second day it grew to this size in the picture and stayed that way. I didn’t notice any change in my health condition, I don’t have temperature, no allergies. When it touch it, it’s hot, I also cough a little, but I had that before. I was told by family friend ( she is getting her degree in being a doctor ) to take benedril, but she doesn’t live here, so she couldn’t tell us what that exactly was. But now I’m getting little worried, because nothing has happened ever since the second day. It just stayed that way, not getting smaller or bigger and only hurts when it’s been tempered (touched or pulled) in any way.

We live in miami, fl. my son dylan came to my house sat morning from his grandparents house. he had a large red bite on his leg. it was pretty red and about the size of a nickel. day 2 it became a little bit lighter in color but now it has a red ring around the bite. i am very concerned and nervous.

In the beginning my son said it was a mosquito bite outside in his tree house/fort that is on ground level in a very tree filled bushy area, now he said it was a black spider while he was sleeping. i dont know what to believe he is only 4.

Here are some pics. I have just kept it clean and put neosporin on it and a band-aid.

I thought originally it was so big because he was scratching it a lot which he usually does with his mosquito bites and they always get this big but never with the red ring. there is no pus yet. but an obvious center where the bite is or where he scratched to hard.

My boyfriend has been bitten by some sort of bug(s). The bites don’t seem too serious. They are just really itchy and look like pink welts–similar to bed bug bites, but we can’t find any signs of them in his mattress and he rarely leaves the house except to go to work (we haven’t totally thrown that idea out the window).

The people he lives with have 2 dogs who are regularly treated for fleas because their owner is severely allergic to fleas, so we’ve ruled that out. He found spider webs in his bedroom, but my dad says that spider bites aren’t supposed to itch. Personally, I don’t think mosquitos would have bitten him that many times.

About a week ago, he was bitten about 7 times on his stomach and sides. Today, he had about 6 more on his arms and arm pit. Please help us figure this out because if it is bed bugs or fleas, then I don’t want to carry them into my house. I don’t know what other kinds of bugs would cause bites like this.

    Thanks,
    Loryn

I have been trying to figure out what bug bite created this cluster of bumps on my arm. Can anyone help? I woke up 3 mornings ago with this small cluster of raised bumps on my arm below my elbow. I had gone walking in my local park in central NJ for about two hours the day before so I figured it was probably a bug bite. My cluster of bumps seems somewhat similar to posts #295 and #401. The patch doesn’t hurt when I touch it, it just itches.

Does anyone have any ideas on what bug did this and how to get rid of it??

    Thanks,

I have a very similar wound as #92 It’s been a week now and it looks like a giant bruise on my thigh. There is a spot about 1 inch round that is swollen and sore with a center resembling a red pimple. The (bruise) was around the area but now has moved to the left and down. It also seems to have gotten bigger.About 5-6 inches round. It does not hurt to the touch but aches slightly inside. My keys in my pocket don’t help! There are spiders in my house so i think one of the little guys got me! Just curious what it could be and if it will get worse.

I’ve attached photos of my mystery bites. These pictures are of my right arm and there are a total of 11 on that one arm, none on the other arm. Then I also have them on both hips, my stomach and one leg. A total of about 30 bites in all. I have no idea where they came from or what bit me. The pictures are 4 days post bite. I live in Colorado at an elevation of 6000 feet so we don’t have a large amount of bugs generally. Mostly mosquitoes and spiders and ticks. But these bites were on April 17th and it’s still pretty early and cold for ticks and mosquitoes so I’m thinking spider? Anyone?

I’m submitting 2 photos taken 6 days after I noticed symptoms on my forehead. The close up shows the expanding red marks which don’t show up as red in the other photo which does show the swelling around my eye. Neither photo shows the general redness or the bump in which they are located on my forehead (below the fleshy one that is always there).

April 18, I began to feel like the fleshy bump in the middle of my forehead had gotten sunburnt. There was no redness, but it felt that way–hot and itchy like a sunburn. I had been sitting outside on a slightly overcast day. Afterwards I had a nap in bed. I didn’t see any of the regular red hard lumps like I often get on my neck (which I think are spider bites, thought they look more like flea bites) when I nap on my couch.

April 19. 24 hours later, it still felt like a sunburn, although a couple of red marks were starting to show below my fleshy bump, rather than an overall sunburn on my forehead. That evening I had a buzzing sensation in those areas. I had also woken that day with my head feeling quite hot, I had nausea and a bad headache.

April 20. There was an angry red bump forming below my fleshy bump, and in the middle was a red mark which looked like an entry point from a stinger–the size of a pin prick. I would have known if a bee had stung me, so I began thinking a spider must have bitten me when I slept in bed on the 18th. I was also feeling similar sensations in my eyebrow. I put Tea Tree Oil on the two areas, which usually helps the itchiness of my other spider bites to the neck, but this time it gave no effective relief. My whole scalp also felt very itchy.

April 21. The hot itchy bump began to enlarge. Also my eyelid began swelling, but not to the point of closing my eyelid. I began taking Benadryl about every 3 hours, and that seemed to help reduce the swelling. But the hot itchiness was nearly driving me to distraction at times.

April 22. The red bump wasn’t as large, and the eyelid swelling was less, but I noticed that skin over and beside my tear duct area was swelling. I’ve continued taking Benadryl and also began applying Vitacilina (with Neomicina & Retinol) a friend brought back from Mexico for her skin bites; and taking Apis Mellifica, a homeopathic remedy for insect bites. The itching on the large hard bump on my forehead as well as the swelling above and beside my eye continue.

April 23. Still have the swelling by the tear duct / bridge of my nose and on my eyelid. While the red bump on my forehead has lessened, the buzzing sensation in it and the hot itchiness continue. What once appeared to be a small red pin prick sized dot in the middle of it, however, has grown (as seen in the picture), and two other dots are also showing beside it, as well as one in my eyebrow, and another one beside my eyebrow.

I’m assuming this is a spider bite I got in bed April 18 afternoon. No other bites occurred from sleeping in the same bed that night, nor while I’ve been away from April 19 till today. I live near Vancouver, Canada and am not aware of any poisonous spiders in my area. As I said, I’ve gotten bitten before with hard red lumps showing up immediately after sleeping on my sofa (couch), but never have I had this kind of reaction before.

I hope to see a doctor tomorrow, but if anyone out there has had a similar experience and knows what caused it, I’d appreciate you telling me about it, and if anything helped. Thx.

My girlfriend and I just got back from Cabo 2 weeks ago. Towards the end of our trip she got a bite on the back of her shoulder. We noticed that it wasn’t getting better and actually started to see multiple bites, almost as if it spread. Now there are 6 punctures within an area about the size of a nickel. Are there any insects that might bite multiple times in such a localized area?

I also was bitten by something. I did not feel it or see it happen. I woke up with two small white lines inside a puffy redish area. It was very sore to touch and walk and would throb when I put my foot up. It has a harder sore area beneath it like some type of nodule. It has been a week or two now. It is still red but less so and the little white lines are less noticable. I have been putting antibiotic ointment on it with a band aid for some time now. It has not gone away but has gotten a little smaller. The nodule is still there.

Got bitten by a spider at a campout in North Carolina on Sunday, 05/03/09. The bite was on my inside right elbow. I didn’t know there was a spider there at all until I felt a sharp sting and saw something about an inch across, dark, descending from my elbow on a strand of web. I didn’t have the time to capture it.
Didn’t think anything of it, but five days later my elbow joint is slightly swollen and the veins of my lower arm are standing out to a pronounced degree, and my elbow is stiff. Feels like arthritis.
    Any idea what got me?

    thanks!

Two days ago, I was getting ready for my prom. I noticed blood dripping down my neck. When I cleaned the area, I noticed two little fangs marks inside a red bump. I never felt anything bite me, and it only itched at first. Yesterday, I was experiencing nausea, diharrhea, fatigue and muscle pains. Today the pain is almost un-bearable and I have a fever. I have a horrible headache and I feel very irritable.
Does anyone know what kind of insect/spider would cause these kind of symptoms? I live in southern Michigan if that helps at all.

    Thanks

I got bit by something Sat. night on my finger while sitting on a friends front porch. I didn’t pay the bite any mind it was a little red with a white center. By Sun. evening it had developed into a liquid filled blister almost like a burn and itched. By Sunday night it was larger and very sensative to the touch so I decided to pop it an drain the clear fluid. Today it was filled with more puss like fluid I have drained it twice today it it just keeps filling back up. It is very sore and had a red ring around the white center. I am getting ready to go to the dr but was wondering if anyone else had a bite like this?

#520 and #517 those look the Bed bug bites we have been dealing with.
We have been battling getting rid of these things for 2 months. You cant find them until the infestation is really bad. They are only easy to find just after they have fed off you and are heading for their egg laying place in the middle of the night around dawn. Thats is when they attack, they will also spread to other rooms if not taken care of.
You can usually tell bed bug bites because they usually will bite 2 or more times in the same area on your skin. They are like mosquitos in that they are attracted to your breath, they can live for a yr without feeding too…hard to get rid of and are stowaways like roaches. They will travel if they get in suitcases, bedding etc.
Check your mattresses for spots that look a little like mold spots or light brown, check bedding and sheets for any little droplets or specks of blood or shed skins. The babies look like little black seeds. Also have you noticed a strange smell in your room?

My daughter (2 years old) had one “bite” on the back of her neck on Monday, today (Weds) she’s got 2 on her neck and one on her forehead. They do not appear to itch. They are totally flat. We live in New Mexico and just returned from a trip to Arizona…so bug central.

The “bites” are approximately 1/4″ in diameter pink circles, with tiny red centers.

    Thanks!

These photos were taken about 10 days into the bite. At first, there were 3 hard, red, hot bumps there and after 4-5 days, you could see the two puncture marks for each one. I am thinking this is as bad as it will get, as they have scabbed over. We, of course, are not sure they are spider bites, but at the time he was working in a nasty basement. I’m not expecting a reply, but if you know for sure that they are spider bites, I would appreciate a confirmation. Thanks. The whole area is about the size of a 1″ equal sided triangle. I have been applying a triple anti-bacterial ointment.

I noticed these bites a few days ago. I woke up with them two mornings in a row after sleeping in the same pajama pants. They were terribly itchy and I scratched them a lot, which explains the scab on the ankle bite. I have washed the pants since so I cannot look for the culprit. the bites are slightly (SLIGHTLY) raised now and are red with white round the bite itself. They are still slightly itchy, but WAY less then when I first noticed them.

finger and thumb started itching, then had pain like holding a lighter under the finger and thumb. Finger and thumb became cold to the touch but the pain felt like my finger and thumb was on fire. Skin at the tips turned black and hard. was very sensitive and painful when bumped. Doctors could not figure out the cause. Had to take motrin and vikaden in order to sleep. Finally a friend recommended “bag balm”. 4 days later my skin peeled off and i could see what looks like a pin prick on both digits. Spider Bite???

I live in Wisconsin where we have plenty of spiders, so I would have assumed that the biting insect that I’ve got in my old apartment ( and that moved with me to the new one,) could have been a spider that comes out at night and bites. There is only one problem though – I can usually see two symmetrical dots from the fangs, yet there is a third dot present a bit further from the first two. The bites are very itchy and they start swelling not right away in the morning, but by the middle of the day. (The bites keep on itching for weeks in a row.) The insect is more likely to crawl out at night when the temperature is hot and humid – then it bites visciously ( I had to take my son to a doctor when he was younger; when he was bitten couple of times, he had bad allergic reaction and his leg was terribly swallen. Now at our new apartment there is no bugs in his room, but they keep on biting me in mine. They seem not to be afraid of Raid that I spray on the legs of my bed, and they crawl out only in the middle of the night, when I am fast asleep. Don’t know what to do any longer, since I can’t identify the insect. All I saw in our apartment during the day time were couple of spiders and silver fish. The only time I have a break from this insect is when the first cold is settling in and it goes into hybernation. When the weather gets warm again, it comes back to life. The pest control did set up the insect traps in our old appartment, but they didn’t find anything. They’ve implied that it was all my imagination, “allergic reaction” – whatever. Except for people who live in our old appartment told me that they are getting the same kind of bites at night, plus my co-worker recently noticed the bites on my arm and told me that her young daughter has got similar bites recently, and she had to take her to a doctor because of severe allergic reaction.

Have no idea what to do any longer, I am at the end of my wits. So far I don’t see any picture that looks similar to the bites I have ( well, bed bugs bites or flea bites look kind of similar to begin with, but the pattern is very different – those mysterious three dots; two close to each other, and the third one a bit further, as if the insect would have a tail that could sting as well. ( The bites are sometimes smaller and sometimes bigger – depending on the size of the insects I assume.)
Any advise how to deal with this problem – how to identify and how to get rid of this insect? (Doctor didn’t have a clue what it could be, when I’ve brough my son in few years ago, but he knew for sure that it was an insect bite.)

    Any input would help -
    thanks in advance,
    H.

    Hi there,

My name is Samantha and I am from South Africa.

I have (I assume) is some sort of insect bite, either bed bugs or spider. But my problem is that I have had it now for almost 3 months and it refuses to heal.

It is very itchy, and everytime I scratch it, the scab comes off and it’s the whole “healing” process all over again.

It is red and white raw in the middle (from scratching of the scabs) with a dark circle around it.

Please help. What can I do to get rid of it?

The pics aren’t too clear but I hope it helps.

    Regards,

    Samantha

This afternoon while mowing (the sort you ride on), I was turning a sharp corner when something bit my arm a little below the crook of my elbow. I about crashed trying to get it off, but I was able to see the insect before it got away. It was moth-like, with black-on-white circle and stripe markings. Immediately afterwords, I stopped the mower and took a look at the bite it had left. It was about the size of a dime, red on the outside with a light bruise in the middle. As time progressed, the bruise became darker and darker. There is a single hole in the center, barely visible. Does anyone know this bug? It’s probably nothing but my wrist feels a little tingly so I want to make sure. (This may or may not have to do with mowing for 3 hours straight. The tingling may just be joint exhaustion.)

So my son came home from his dad’s house on Sunday and showed me he had a ‘bump’ on his neck. I checked and it’s located on the nape of his neck to the right of his spinal cord, it’s a ‘ball’ of skin about the size of a small blueberry, possibly a swollen lymph node or gland. He said it didn’t hurt but he didn’t want me touching it either. Monday when he came home from school he had another lump, this one is along his neck muscle in an oblong shape. Again, I felt it and sure enough another lump, he stills says they don’t hurt, but now he adds that he has a ‘mosquito’ bite and it itches.

The bite is behind the top of his ear in his hairline, I looked it wasn’t much of anything so I let it go and called the doctor to make an appointment regarding these lumps just in case it’s something more than just swollen nodes or glands. Well this morning (Tuesday) before he went off to school I check his lumps and his ‘bite’, the bite is now a lump, like a large pimple, still flesh in color. Later that afternoon I asked to check it again, now the bite is coloring, like a bruise almost, blood nearing the surface. Bedtime rolls around and I check it again, this time, it’s worse ! The bite is now dark purplish deep burgundy blackish color, it almost looks like it wants to ooze. He’s had trouble sleeping the last two nights because it hurts (and still itches). I’m almost afraid of what it’s going to look like tomorrow (Wednesday) morning. His appointment is in the afternoon, so I guess I’ll know more then, but for now, it’s a bite.. a bad bite… and I don’t even know what it was that bit him or when he was actually bit.

Here’s another one for you. I never saw any bugs, but I have the pair of bites (pictured) on my leg, another one on my foot and another one on my rib cage. The rib cage bite appeared a few days ago and then the other bites appeared yesterday. Not painful, and I feel fine, but I’ve never had a bite look like this before. I live in the city and haven’t been anywhere near woodsy or grassy areas anytime in recent memory. I did return from a 4-star resort hotel stay about a month ago–could they be bites from bed bugs hitchhiking on my luggage? Thanks for your site and input!

    Thanks,

i am not sure what type of bite i have, it started puffy like a big zit, then the inflammation grew to around a radius of 2.5 centimeters by day three. the original symptom i had was that it was very itchy, even past the inflammation. felt a little fatigue.

day five, the inflammation went down a little, but fatigue increased by a lot (even though i drank like four cups of coffee), coughing a lot with flem, and i am not sure if i have a fever but i feel hot. maybe i just became sick, but i am unsure if whatever bit me mimics an illness.

While driving, I was bitten or stung by something on the bottom of my foot that caused me immediate excruciating pain. I had tingling in my toes and sharp pain when i tried to move them for about 24 hours. after that, horribly itchy, swollen, red. the actual bite mark is just a tiny red dot that can barely be seen. i live in florida. this was not an ant bite, as i’ve been bitten probably hundreds of times on the feet by ants, never anything like this. does anyone know what kind of insect this may be???

yes i am hoping someone knows if my spider bite is bad at all because I’ve had it for at least 4 to 5 days. the bite is between my toes the only discoloring I’ve had was it turning from a faint red to a dark/light burgundy color with little blisters all around the puncture wounds the blisters have seemed to bust already because it’s all ozie like but the blisters are a yellowish color but when they popped it was clear i do not know what kind of spider bit me so if someone know what kind of bite this is please let me know.

I work at a public library, and found numerous (what appeared to be bites) mostly on my feet yesterday, at work, 6/16/09.

I went to a Workers Comp Dr. today, and he said this appeared to be a skin infection. He put me on 10 days of Keflex.

These look more like bites to me. There are 13 total lesions, most of them on my feet, one on my upper chest, and 3 on my left arm and wrist. They are very itchy.

A co-worker brings her 2 dogs to the library: Could these be inflamed flea or tick bites? I’ve never been allergic to these sorts of bites in the past.

My library boss has an upper-chest rash. Related?

I have not been outdoors much, and only noticed these lesions yesterday and today. They seem to be worsening, changing color and suppurating, prompting my visit to the Doctor.

Thanks so much for your help.

My almost 3 year old son had this bite that was raised on his right left shoulder blade. I assumed it was just a mosquito bite because they have terrible at our house lately. He has tons of mosquito bites on his neck, arms, and legs from being outside, but this is now on the third day. Today the bite seems to be two side by side, and with a red ring around the outside. Any thoughts would be helpful! Thanks!

I was bitten last night in total darkness, the initial pain was sharp, and at first it didn’t itch. The swollen area was very small and looked like a mosquito bite, today however I have woken up to a large reddish swollen area, (about 3 inches in diameter) and intolerable itching. However; there is no pain. Not sure what it could be, thanks for any help. Love the page!

I went running early yesterday morning and while I was out my arm, near my elbow, started to itch. It looked like a mosquito bite. Today, it still itches, though not as bad (I try to ignore the itchyness) and it’s pinkish and warm. The weirdest part is that it’s a perfect circle with the original mark in the center. It’s about 1.5-2 inches in diameter. Thought it was a mosquito, but beginning to think otherwise…any ideas?

My 8 yr old daughter has been complaining about the itching all over her body. they look like an allergic reaction, but she isn’t allergic to anything. After scratching the itches for a while, hives turn up. The doctor gave us some of the anti-itch cream that we can pick up at any drug store, but the hives are not going away. any idea as to what I might be dealing with, I do have 2 cats which happen to be indoor only, and are never let outside.

to joann #95…i’m not positive but that looks like poison ivy or sumac or oak. it starts out with one or two blistery bumps and after scratched spreds to more itchy blistery bumps…i always have to go to the doctor because i am so allergic. calamine lotion helps but don’t let it get to bad…can get in your bloodstream.

We live in Melbourne, FL and bug bites are really common here. I did not see the insect that did this, but we have destroyed a few black widow webs and brown spiders are a frequent sight. We spray the house and grounds regularly, but it’s a serious effort to battle bugs here.

When I was bathing my 18 month daughter yesterday I noticed what I thought was a bad mosquito bite on the back of her knee. This morning when I was getting her dressed I noticed that it is much worse. It’s about 3 1/2 inches around, warm to the touch, swollen, hard and there is a small red scab in the middle. The raised swollen part in the middle around the scab seems to be white and the outer edge is red and inflamed.

About a month ago my small dog (chihuahua) and i visited my parents out in the country outside Spokane Washington. We did lots of walking outside while there. Noticed 5 “bites” on my dog’s abdomen (mostly around his genitals) that looked exactly like an acne cyst with a raised white-head-type center. BUT MOST STRIKING WAS A PERFECTLY SYMMETRICAL RED RING (JUST LIKE A BULL’S-EYE TARGET, A LITTLE LARGER THAN A QUARTER, AROUND THE ‘BITE’. The skin between the “bite” and the red ring was almost perfectly white, like I had drawn a perfect red circle around the “bite” with a felt pen!

He happened to be going to the vet for something else the next day, and vet said the red “bull’s eye” type ring is a classic sign of an allergic reaction. And that it could have been a bug or even a reaction to some sort of plant.

But what is worrisome is that tonite–a full month later–I checked and the red ring is gone but all the bites are still there and are the same size. But instead of a white, pustule-like head, there is now a blackish-gray, hardened top on each one. ( it is NOT a scab) My worry is necrotic skin. Also I can still feel a hard nodule type of thing underneath this blackish-gray top.

Sound familiar to anyone? Please let me know if so, cuz I’m debating another vet visit but our finances are in dire straights right now. Thanx, Teresa

I was training my horse outside (New Mexico) and felt a tickle under my jeans. Thinking it might be a fire ant I tried to squish the bug. I didn’t feel anything but almost immediately I felt a burning/stinging sensation in the area of the tickle. Soon the burning was so intense I stopped training to so look at the sting/bite area. I don’t know what bit me but the burning stopped after several hours but now about 48 hours later I still have a red area. (see pictures) Any ideas what might have bit/stung me?

Yesterday I was working in the yard and I felt a sharp sting on my leg — worse than what a normal bee sting would feel like. I did not see what stung me. I started feeling sharp pains shotting down my leg, which continued throughout the day. The area was swollen in about 4 places, about half the size of a penny. Today there is a round area about 2″ wide around both sets of bites and it’s hot and itches. I can see two puncture wounds about 1/4″ apart. Next to that are another two wounds that look like bruises. Those are a little less than 1/2″ apart. Today I feel very tired and have taken two naps. I’m starting to feel lousy. I’m not sure if I should go to a doctor.

There is a bite on my left middle finger, a very small bite but the whole bottom half of the finger is swollen and tight. I am afraid to bend too much, in case I open the skin farther or tear it. It itches and sometimes burns, and my hand up to my elbow is somewhat achey, my hand moreso. The redness around the bite goes from my knuckle to the middle of the finger. I have no idea what bit me, but it happened yesterday That’s when I first noticed swelling.
I feel fatuiged, but that could just be from lack of sleep. Other than the aching in my arm and the swelling, tiching/burning and redness I have no symptoms so far.

I got bit/stung on July 4th in western Maryland. I think this happened when I was sitting on a dock watching fireworks. I had two different kinds of bug spray on my legs and arms and head, and I got a few there. Mostly, I got these on my ankles and my butt.

I think I got bit by few different bugs. I don’t think they are spiders, but have no idea what it is. I lose count at 200 total on my body, about half on my butt and upper back thighs.
Most of the bites are red bulls eye dots, mostly pretty round, except for areas that have more than one bite next to each other. Most are ringed with white. Some are ringed with a very slight purple tint. They aren’t really raised or headed. They do not itch. Mostly, they didn’t hurt when I got bit. I felt one or two little things, thats why I think it is more than one insect.

I didn’t even know until the next day about the bites on my legs and more than 24 hours later for the bites on my butt.
It has been about 36 hours and a lot seem to be fading away. However, still very gross. Help, anyone have this before?! Thank you!

I noticed a bite two days ago. I thought it was a mosquito bite because it was small and itchy. However, the initial pink section (about .5 inch) has stayed the same but a smaller red spot (about .2 inch) has showed up in the middle of the pink. I also noticed a larger circle of lighter pink around the outside of the pink (about 3 inches across). It itches and is swollen and warm.
I wasn’t too concerned until I read about all of these other scary bites.
Please let me know what you think.
    Thank you,

I am from SE MN and was at the river this past weekend. The second day I noticed a small pimple on my stomach. By the next day there was a hard mass that developed under that area (under the skin, not protruding) & I figured it to be an ingrown hair or something like that. I ignored it. As the day progressed the area became very soar and the swelling spread. The mass was getting larger, still flush with the skin and hard as a rock. By that evening I started to become very sick and the mass still grew.

I took myself to the ER, about a 50min drive, and by the time I got there I was in serious pain. I could not move well or even bend to that side of my body & the mass was now at the size of a softball. I had extreme nausea and my muscles and joints were soar & stiff like when one gets the flu. The doc just checked the area & said it is an insect bite, put moist heat on the infected area & take antibiotic for 7 days. I wanted to punch the guy in the face for not giving me anything for the pain! My formal prognosis was insect bite with secondary cellulite.

I went home and tried to calm & relax myself as much as possible with the moist heat pack & laid down. After a little time had past I started into the hot/cold sweats really bad and couldn’t even sleep long then a half an hour at a time. I am really not sure I have ever felt so sick in my life (fyi I do get kidney stones). Day 2 was not much better. I couldn’t eat anything but some saltines and a little water. It was painful to move period. Day 3 the cellulitis mass seemed to have gotten smaller and I was still having cold/hot sweats and pain along with headache and over all grogginess. By that night I bent over and felt the ooze! I began to ooze white puss and blood from the bite. So sick!

Today is day 4. I still don’t have much for an appetite, still have a pain in that area and feel overall groggy. I had ooze once again this morning, but most of it was dark red blood with little clots in it. I have not checked with my doctor yet to see if this is normal or good. As per what I have read about cellulite I would assume the redness of the area and the oozing would be gone or at least diminished by this time with the antibiotic and heat treatment.

I have never been allergic to any kind of insect bite; ie: bees, mosquitoes, horse fly’s. I never did see or feel the bite, but figure it must have happen when I put on a life jacket that stopped right about my waist line that had been sitting in a dark damp area in a boat. It is the only thing I could figure and happened the same day.

I sure wish I knew what bit me!

I’ll tell you about my bite (sorry, no pictures) but more interesting is what I did and how it helped. I thought it was a mosquito bite between two fingers which is always an itchy nuisance. But it bothered me so much that a day later (we were camping) I heated a pot of water to apply hot compresses to it, the washcloth starting between the fingers and wrapping around my hand, as hot as I could stand, for about five minutes. This works for mosquito bites, the theory being that it deactivates the enzyme responsible for the itch. There’s a hand held battery-operated heater being sold to do that. Heat DOES work; the itch goes away and doesn’t come back.

As did the itch in this case. But I didn’t notice until the next day that my hand had been swelling and there was a 1/4 inch clear blister. This was no mosquito, and I never felt a bite. I was brobably bitten while collecting wood for the fire the first afternoon. I’m back home on the third day. Whatever it was has stabilized and I can tell that the swelling (which also involved my forearm) is going down. The blister is still there, is clear (no pus) and has minor redness immediately around the edge of it. I had neither neurological symptoms nor physical symptoms like fever, chills or nausea. The blister suggests to me a digestive enzyme typical of spiders, but the process has apparently been arrested and the hand/arm are now healing.

Although the itch from mosquito bites is from an anticoagulant enzyme and spider bites contain a digestive enzyme, this suggests a quick first aid remedy: use hot compresses. Don’t burn yourself, but as hot as you can stand. The digestive enzymes that spiders inject will continue working for quite a while. It’s how spiders eat; they liquefy the innards of their prey so they can suck the liquid out. My experience suggests that hot compresses can deactivate spider enzymes as well as they do mosquito enzymes.

I can’t promise this is a sure thing, but having seen some of the tissue destruction spider bites can cause I would think this theory is worth a try. Applying hot compresses for a good amount of time a few times a day is also a good way to quell infection. I’ve completely healed a few close-to-the-surface abscesses with nothing more than the aggressive use of hot compresses.

I noticed this bite about 41 hours ago. It is currently Sunday morning at 2am central time. the pic was taken around 32 hours ago. 41 hours ago was at 9am on a Friday. that night before i went to sleep, possibly even Wednesday night/Thursdays morning before i went to sleep, i experienced extreme and sudden dizziness, and also the urge to vomit. these symptoms could or could not have anything to do with it, but I’ve never had any health problems in the past.

on a further note, Friday, around 3pm-5pm, i went to get out of my car, and my leg nearly gave out on me. (leg is where the bite is, same leg as one nearly giving out)
i have had flu like symptoms, but mainly common cold symptoms.
diarrhea, congestion, tone of voice change, mucus developing in nose and throat, sore throat, somewhat lack in energy.

the place itself does not hurt much, maybe even not at all unless agitated
by clothing, or pressure applied. i cannot see any spider fang marks
of any sort, but however i do see what could be spider bite marks.
the 2 look similar to sunken in pores.
one is present in the center of purple area,
one is off to the side, where purple area ends.
the redness is about the size of a quarter.
the purple area the size of a pencil eraser.

if you could save me a trip to the doctor, it would be greatly appreciated.
i do not have the money for the doctor, nor insurance.
and on a further note, my hospital’s performance to me in the past,
would be rated 2 out of 10, 10 being excellent, 1 being quacks.

thanks in advance on any information you can give me.
it seems to be blister like, but i read it could also be staph.
and for staph it said not pop it. so, i have not done so yet.

please send any information asap to metalist_5488 @yahoo.com
    thank you very much.

While on vacation in southern Wisconsin a week ago, I was swimming in a river when I felt something bite or sting me on the inside of my thigh. I did not see the insect, but I sure felt the bite happen.
I was wearing tight swim shorts which I assume rules out any animal bite or allergic reaction to a plant. It now resembles ring worm, except there is an open red sore in th center. It is itchy and painful.
Can anyone offer any insight into what this is and how to get rid of it? Also, is it possible the ringworm fungus entered at the site of the bite and that’s what I’m seeing now? Thank you to anyone who can help me out with this.

however i have 2 ‘bites’ each time and in the same location on my body (inside right knee) but in two separate locals…20 miles apart.
both times i was unaware of having beet bitten until i felt the burning sensation.
it looked like two mosquito bites next to each other then the next day turned into the bubbly bumps.
the first round required antibiotics and caused severe pain from hip to ankle inside of my leg.
the first was in April 2009 this on is now july 2009. i have a brown dry scar from the first set.
im wondering if the second set is a re-occurrence of the first set or if its a second bite. it seems too coincidental.
because i have no critter, no amount of research or physician attention has gotten me answers. i even work in a hospital and have gotten conflicting advice.
any suggestions as to what this might be to keep it from happening again would be appreciated!
    thanks for the web site!

I have had spider bites in the past and am just getting over one. Woke up this morning with my elbow in quite a bit of pain. When I looked in the mirror sure enough another spider bite. Much more painful than the others – redness about the size of a half dollar with a big flat white spot in the middle. Not itchy, just painful.

My sister had just told me about a herbal cure for spider bites, especially if you catch it early. First I put a bit of ammonia on which usually helps other stings. Then you crush up bindweed, basically make a poultice and put it on the bite. Hold it on there with a band aid. Half an hour later it’s not hurting. I’ll let you know how it turns out, but I’m impressed so far. Nothing else really touched it.

My 9 month old daughter has a knot of her face under the skin. It has been there for about 2 months now and at first I thought it was just a mosquito bite and I still do in a way. Anyways u can see a little dot in the middle which is what made me think it was a mosquito bite but today I decided to mash on it and all that came out was a black head but the knot is still there… She hasnt ever acted like it bothered her which is the reason I have put off letting a dr cut into it. Im just starting to wonder if it will ever go away and what it actually is b/c it feels a lil warm when I touch the area… Its almost like the knots she got after her shots…

2 days ago i was sitting outside on the ground by the pool talking on the phone. I went in about an hour later and the next day i woke up to find 3 big bites on the side of my leg close to my knee. They itched pretty bad but i didn’t think anything of it. Now about 25 more of the same little bites have appeared all down the bottom of my leg.

They are very small, but bigger than a normal ant bite..kind of like a mosquito bite, but they are red, some have a white dot in the middle and a couple have little scabs on them, butprobably only because ive been scratching them. I have no idea what they are and more just keep appearing. If anyone knows what they might be or how to treat them I would really appreciate it. Oh, and I live in central Arkansas if that helps. Thanks.

i think i’ve been bitten by a spider.
it’s been about 4 days, and the red-trail seems to have gotten longer,
    though spread-out more.
i started to put ‘carmex’ on it today, per someone’s comment.
can someone you please help identify this bite.
    i’m really getting worried.

    We live in Cape Town.

On Monday night my husband started with a temperature and pain in the gland in his groin. He started antibiotics yesterday, the temperature still swings up and down.

His balance is not too good, but that could be a combination of temperature and post-polio syndrome. Breathing seems shorter than usual.
I have been looking at pictures on your website, but all the bites seem localized. The rash in the pictures now extends all around the leg and down to the ankle. The close up might focus on the “bite” site (if this is a bite). The skin above the knee is starting to mottle.

Please could you give us some information.

In Ref to #92 I did not see anyone that made a comment on this picture. My husband’s bite looks just like this picture, trying to find out what kind of spider/snake/insect it was. I took him to the ER just to be safe and they said it was a spider bite but they were not sure! If someone could let me know what it is or any thoughts of what could have bit him would be greatly appreciated.

I thought I had a bunch of mosquito bites on my upper left chest and back, but now Im not sure. The first day, each of the dozen or so bites swelled up into 1/2 inch-wide irregular circles. For the next 2 days I put a salve on them and watched as each individual 1/2 inch mound turned into 4-5 small nubs with puss in them. I then applied tea tree oil to dry them out with tea-tree oil and the swelling and redness did go down, especially around the nubs. I decide to stop everything (day 5) since it was getting better. That evening I went jogging and the full redness returned around the nubs, but I just decided to wait and see what happened.

The next day (yesterday), I woke up with a strange pain in my left arm and later in the day I had an awful headache (mostly on the left side). Then today I still have the pain in my arm, and the headache is only there if I jostle too much, but I also have strange pains in my back, like near my kidneys, and it feels like some sort of shooting nerve pain or something.

Help! Should I go to the doctor? Or will this poison just pass through my body and leave me okay? I really dont like pussy nobs so Im happier that I didnt have to watch those things pop, ick.

    Joanie,
Your describing what may be shingles. It affects only one side of your body (most of the time) and can look like red swollen bites or even blisters. If you’ve ever had chicken pox, the virus may be acting up again. It can be treated with medication so it would be best to see the doctor. Also, shingles is contagious and pregnant women should NOT be around it as it can have harmful effects on a growing fetus.

    Good Luck,
    Krissy

My wife has the same bite as in #159 September 20, 2007 @2:19am

Can you tell me what caused this? We have been to 3 doctors all with different opinions. We think it was a spider bite.

We were swimming at a lake one day. when we got back to the cabin i was feeling intense itching around my ankles but no evidence of bite marks, on my lower legs, behind the knees and on my chest. a few others felt itchy too. we all showered and washed well which seemed to be the end of it for most except me. the next morning i woke up and all the areas that were itchy had red bumps similar to spider bites. it is now day 3 and they seem to be getting firmer and more itchy if touched. the water wasn’t too warm as the summer temperatures hadn’t been above 80. we were told that the algae “bloomed” in the lake the day before. could that have to do with it?

I know a few of these posts are old and this may not be any help for you now, but maybe it will help someone else. Post # 296 says their “bite” started like a mosquito like bite then three days later spread. That is how ringworm starts…which is not a worm, but a fungus. I got it last year about the same time you posted. Ringworm does not have to be in perfect concentric circles like you would think. I thought mine was a mosquito bite the first day and kept scratching. The second day I thought it was an infected mosquito bite because of the way it spead until I realized it was spreading larger and faster for that type of infection. The center at this time even appeared as it couldv’e been a bug bite. There was a growing necrotized looking area. I knew I was exposed to a house the day before this happened with previous ringworm issues (six months earlier), and discovered my hunch was correct. It was classic ringworm. Ringworm spores are pretty hearty and contagious.

I’m a microbiologist (not medical micro) and I didn’t catch it right away either. Fungus looks a lot different growing in petrie dishes. Your doctor probably never seen it before either. Cover the area with a bandage to keep from spreading and use tea tree oil. It has antifungal properties. It will take some time to stop looking yucky, but at least it will stop spreading. It took almost a year for the scar to fade. When I give it some thought, it would probably be a good idea to not eat simple carbs or sugars for a bit. Molds and yeasts feed off those and it would take longer to get it under control.

I am suspecting that the woman in post #514 may have some sort of fungal issue also. First the location is ideal, in moist warm covered groin area. And I believe in that geographical area fungal infections are also more common than here.

MY problem: First, I live in the central Ohio area. The puzzle I am trying to solve today is I think I may have been bitten on my hand by a spider last week, but thought it was just a blood blister until today. The day it happened, the area was sore, I played with it and squeezed, and my skin bubbled, popped, and oozed clearish, bloody fluid. I was working in my garden last week, wearing gloves. Anything could have happened. I’ve peeled off dried top layers of dead skin today and the area underneath appears to be a chemical burn. It’s itched all week, but no swelling to speak of. There was never a clear indication of fangs or a bite mark. I’ve been bitten by spiders before. There is usually a necrotized area in the center, but I was never aware of that here. No one else on this site has posted anything like it. The size is about the end of a Q tip. I’m stumped.

My friend and I went hiking along Blackjack Creek in Port Orchard, Washington (Kitsap county) on August 9th 2009 and there were loads of orb weaver spiders everywhere.

He got bitten twice by something, we’re assuming it was the orb weavers, but can’t be sure.

He has two bites that are over a week old now. One has turned kind of black in the center and the other one is starting to turn colors as well.

My daughter was bitten yesterday, August 23, 2009. She is only six years old. She was playing outside and did not see what bit her. The initial bite was a very big hole. I only saw one hole (this made me think of a bee sting but much bigger). I did not see a second hole. She was wearing leggings, and I found no insect inside her clothing. Less than one day later after school I realized a big, red, rock hard, hot circle around the bite mark. I prepared to take her to the ER. Before we left the circle had gotten bigger. At the ER the doctor said it was a spider bite.

He gave her prednisone and told me to give her benydryl. The size of the circle around the bite continues to grow in diameter. I am very, very worried. I am going to email some pictures I have just taken. There are markings on her skin. The first circle is where the bite is. The first circle was at 3 p.m. today. The second circle was at 11 p.m. tonight after we got back from the hospital. You can contact me a few different ways. My email is rhall0091@ gmail.com My name is Rebecca Hall and any information you can give me will be a big help. Thanks! I will be emailing photos shortly.

Last month, my roommates and I found that we had bed bugs in our apt… a pretty small infestation, but we decided to get a PCO out to exterminate. Since then, I’ve washed all of my clothes and dried on high for 90 min. like they say, and I’ve been staying at my parent’s house to ease my nerves.

BUT I have found a couple of bites of some sort (one on my back, one just below my back waistband) that don’t really itch or hurt and disappear in a few days. They look similar to mosquito bites (a little smaller), but they’re in weird places. When I had bed bug bites, they were much bigger (like welts) and itched like CRAZY. I usually find them after I drive home in the evening.

I feel like I’m going insane. I’ve always been bite-prone, but rarely in places that are covered by clothes, and they’re usually itchy.

Please help if you can… I’m sure they’re not dangerous, but I might be if I don’t figure out what they are. Thanks!

    Hi,

I am hoping someone might have some insight. Ten days ago I woke up with a series of insects/spider bites on my abdomen. One was on my back, one on my side, and a cluster on front. The bites hurt a lot, but very little itching. The one on my back developed a head, but none of the others. The healing was very slow and even though the skin started to slowly look better I was experiencing real discomfort and pain below the bite sites. The areas below became so tender that I saw a local doctor. The doctor did a quick once over, checked for fever, asked about urine output, but barely touched the areas. She prescribed and antibiotic and low level steriod. I have started to feel some better. But the tenderness in the tissue is lingering and I wondering what is going on. It can be uncomfortable to bend or sleep on that side without advil. And I have some light headness, especially if I try to massage the tender areas. Any thoughts ?

    Thanks Laura of Lebanon OH

I’ve had this spider bite or about 2 or 3 weeks and it is on my upper leg/inner thigh area. It has a head like a pimple but underneath the skin is a hard lump and it has a bruised color. Can anyone tell me what spider caused this or if it’s even a spider bite? I’m a bit worried that it’s been on my thigh for so long. It doesn’t seem to be getting any smaller and it hurts when I walk sometimes. Please help!!

This morning I woke up with a small, white bump, pretty flat, with a red ring around it. It sort of looked like a burn, but I hadn’t burnt myself the night before. As I went through the day, little tiny blisters appeared. Later, the little tiny blisters got bigger, and they merged into one larger blister. The blister is now about 1/8 of an inch across, and the ring is a little thicker. I don’t really have headaches or anything, but I have been slightly itchy all over today. Should I get this checked out?

Have had little bites which seem like mites under my skin and itching on and off for six months. Went to 3 doctors, finally they gave me permithrin cream and it stopped. Then it came back a bit and I have washed all the clothes, changed linens, buying a new matress and am afraid to sleep in my room. Used nix in my hair and then the cream all over body. But then it seems I get itchy again. Little welts on my forearms tonight, a few on the top of my feet and around ankles. In the am my palm itched and then i peeled the skin off and tonight it is healed up. Its so strange and I can’t seem to live my life without fearing more bites or whatever it is will come back. I want it to go away for once and for all. My forehead itches alot as well. I also used a room purifier which kills all mites, and dust particles, etc. Any ideas?
They didn’t think it was scabies, but the permithrin really did help, but I was told I can’t keep using it as it is dangerous to use it more than twice. Please send me info. I also put clothes in garbage bags for 6 days to kill anything. Washed everything in hot water and hot dryer. Any suggestions.

About 3 months ago, while visiting family in Southern Ontario, I was bitten in my sleep by mosquitoes. Seemed normal enough, only as the bites faded away, small circular bruises took their spots. They came a month after the initial bite and haven’t faded or shown any signs of going away. (This is true for every bite, 7 on my legs and one on my side)

I was wondering if they were in fact mosquitoes and if the bites would eventually fade. (Hopefully they came from the open window and not the bed itself, otherwise I’m scared of sleeping there again)

I was bitten during a car ride, I started to become extremely itchy. To the point where I was scratching so much my skin was wlepping up. It is about the size of a softball and black and blue, it is slightly tender, and I’ve been having total body itching. I’ve been taking benadryl to try and control the itching. Somebody help! I think it was a spider bite. I was bitten 4 days ago today. And it still looks like this. It’s awful.. any help will be totally useful (: Thank you.

I got a spider bite in my house. It’s red/pink on the outside, with a little white circle in the middle. It doesn’t itch, but burns as if it was a fresh cut. And when you touch it, it hurts ten times worse. I tried putting on neosporin, but that hurt too. But the pain from the neosporin eventually died down.

I think I have an insect bite. Its on my pinkie finger. My finger started itching so I scratched it a little. Then realized what I was doing decided it was a spider bite or mosquito bite and left it alone. By 10am my finger was starting to swell and I was having a hard time bending it. I cleaned it with peroxide that evening.I did not have the time to go to the doctor to have it checked out so I decided to ignore it, if it changed color then I would go in. Monday morning it was even more swollen. Reddish in color and tender (still kinda itched). By noon it was starting to get hard in the center. Today is Wednesday and it is half an inch in diameter, dark red, hard, and looks like it is coming to a point. Should I go to the doctor or wait it out?? Thanks for any advice.
