I live in South Orange, New Jersey and yesterday as I was waiting for the train I picked up my bag which had been sitting on the floor and when I put it on my shoulder and the lower part of the bag came in contact with my hip, I felt a stabbing pain, like something bit me. It felt like someone had stuck a needle repeatedly there. I looked down and there was something squished there, but I couldn’t tell if it was a bug or not.

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to take a closer look until later in the evening, so I just ignored it as best I could. Eventually the pain went away but there is a red patch of skin there, that has turned to becoming very itchy. I can’t see any obvious bite mark or blister or anything… but I’m pretty sure it was a bite, and from what I’ve looked around at I believe it was a spider bite.

It doesn’t seem very serious now, but I was wondering if anyone knew what had caused this, or what you think I should do? Should I cover it, put cream on it? I haven’t consulted a doctor. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

A little bit of added information for my previous post.

I first went to the doctor about 4 days, which was when it started getting the red line that is now the open wound. I first went to my OB doctor because I am 18 weeks pregnant and my first concern was the baby. He prescribed me antibiotics, it was 5 days worth and I believe it was called cephlexin. He also wanted me to follow up with a general practitioner or go to the ER if I couldn’t get into another doctor, because he said this was way out of his realm. But he did check the babies heartbeat and everything sound great.

So that evening I went to the ER. The doctor there pushed around on it a bit and said he didn’t feel like there was any fluid that need to be drained. He also said he didn’t feel it was a brown recluse, or it would have been worse already, so that was a relief. There they gave me a shot in the hip of antibiotics, not sure what kind. They told me to follow up with a general practitioner.

Yesterday was when I was finally able to get to one, which is now about 11 days since I noticed the bite. Tomorrow I have an appointment with the surgeon he referred me to. I think it is a plastic surgeon. I really had no idea what type of doctor I should be going to so I am just going with the flow of what the docs tell me.

The area doesn’t seem to be spreading anymore, so I think their concern now is to get this area healed as best possible with the least amount of scarring.

I live in CT and I’m not sure if my son got bit by a spider. He has a diamond shaped bruise on his arm about 2 by 3 centimeters and right in the middle there is a small cirle that is raised and not bruised. The doctor said to watch it.

I have always been scared of spiders [aracniphobia] and when i went on holiday to south africa in johannahs burg in a safari park I saw a huge brown hairy spider climbing over the door where my mum was and i just sat in my bed went as pale as snow and fainted (mum said she thort i had seen a ghost but when she realised what it was slamed the door shut)

I begged her to call room service to get rid of it but she refused seeing as she had a short night dress on and it was early hours of the morning so we had a safari at 5:00am and my brother and mother managed to get past the spider on the stair case and it took them both 45 minutes of convicing to make me even stand on the 1st step and belive i have never been as close to a wall as then!

Anyway my grandparents were next door (in the room next door) once the cleaner had done our room she told my grandparents about the spider she saw ont he stairs and told them that we should of called room services amidietly because it was a highly poisnus spider![also in Africa i heard there are theses spiders that make golden web?]

I had a bite for 1 week. It is going away now. Didnt feel the bite, it just was oval shaped it got red and when I started itching it that just made it itch worse. It was maybe an inch wide. Hadnt had a bite like that. Any ideas what kind of bite I think it is some kind of spider. I have been finding male black widow spiders on the outside of the house but I dont think its that. By the way I live by Savannah Ga.

I live in Albuquerque, NM and was dragging wood pallets out of a warehouse when I felt a “sting.” At that moment I thought it was a splinter, but when I looked a minute later, it was obviously a bite of some kind and it itched like crazy – way more than a mosquito.

A fairly large lump on my hand formed immediately – about the size of a pencil eraser. I squeezed it hard between my fingernails and quite a bit of clear fluid came out and the lump was gone. It has been about a month now and I still have this small red, itchy lump (it came back) on my hand, and there is a small ulicerated area in the center – probably from scratching too – it still really itches!

Anyone have any idea what bit me? (I’ve been stung by bees – no biggie, and I am not alergic to anything that I know of – so I don’t think I react strongly to much.)

I’m just curious what this was and wished I had gone back to look!

5 days ago i was in western springs (suburb of chicago) and was sleeping in a finished basement….the next day i felt a slight irritation on my inner bicep and didn’t think too much about it. Later I noticed ~1cm red area slight raised with white head and another ~2-3mm red spot about 3 inches away and 2 other red raised areas on my chest! The main large red area on my bicep began too develop an area of redness around it which eventually has grown to about 2.5 inches and is warm to touch.

Now, 5 days later the central area is less red and redness around it is somewhat “clearing” or less red …. it looks similiar to Bulleye rash pictures i have seen on the web and this scares me because there was a dog in the house and although they live in a very manicured suburb it’s several miles from a wooded area….. and in that county (Cook) there have been 3 cases of Lyme disease.

It seems most likely that i was biten multiple times by a spider but I’m freakin out a bit that it might have been a tick. Has anyone else experience a spider bite healing and looking similiar to a bullseye rash ?

Any comments would be appreciated and I don’t want to have unnecessary antibiotic treatments.

    Thanks

Hi, I live in eastern Pennsylvania. I have arachnaphobia, so I try to stay away from spiders as much as I can. I’m not sure if it is a spider bite or not. There are 2 very small pimple like bumps above my wrist. They are about 1 millimeter apart. The whole thing is about 1/16 of an inch wide.

The bite itches a little bit and I’ve had it for a little over a day. I was cleaning my basement and there are a lot of spiders, but none that are lethal I’m pretty sure. I would really like to know if it is just a common bite, or if I should seek help.

    I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks,
    Matt

I live in Lake Charles, Louisiana and I was bitten on my leg about three to four days ago. My leg started to swell really bad two mornings ago. I am starting to feel it in my knee now. The red around the bite is about the size of a baseball and right around the bite it is starting to get dark. When I squeeze on it it puses up, I don`t know what I should do or what kind of spider it was. If anyone knows what it is. Please help me.

My wife has a bite mark that looks exactly like the pic posted by “Jill, #7 on July 24, 2007 @ 6:16PM” and am hoping that it has been identified.

My wife received the bite on a Thursday. It started out as a small pimple which broke the next day & hasn’t healed yet & continues to grow in size. The Sunday/Monday following the bite she was nauseous & had Diarreah. We didn’t put the two together until a few days later & now believe the “food poisoning” like symptoms are related to an allergic reaction she had to the bite.

It’s now over a week later, the bit site continues to grow, medical people are prescribing vreams & anti-biotics, anti nausea meds etc, but the bite mark is not healing. I’m hoping someone can help us. Please post any info you may have.

    Thank You!

    Hi,

I found this spider bite on my shoulder last night when I was getting ready for bed.

    Spider bite on shoulder

We were outside in a woodsy area in Michigan and went to the beach later on in the evening. I’m not sure where I got it. The bite doesn’t hurt but, it is around an inch in diameter. It is swollen but does not itch and I haven’t noticed any other symptoms for me to be concerned about. Do I need to see a doctor for this?

    Thanks for your help,

    Deana

Update on 8/21/07 – After a week, it finally disappeared. We are seeing bites from the oak leaf itch mite in these areas, so maybe I had a bite from one of those bugs. Thanks for your prompt response though!

Jeff and any other people in Chicagoland area,

I live in a western Suburb of Chicago and have also had a few bites. I actually noticed my first bite about 1 1/2 weeks ago. I woke up in the morning and noticed a red raised spot on my thigh, I didn’t think anything of it until I noticed other people in my family had similar ones.

At first I thought mosquitos or bed bugs, but then after talking to other people in this area have the same thing. Now, the first one has pretty much cleared up but I have 5 more! They range in size but are red and have one single bite mark in the center and usually have pus the first day then scabs over…

If anybody knows what these bites are, please respond… I’m getting anxious because they only seem to be getting worse… thank you!

My girlfriend got bit by a spider on her shoulder a few days ago, we live in Chicago. It’s red with a small puncture in the center and its beginning to get hard like an infection. It’s also been growing in size to about 2 inches. She is complaining that all the muscles around it and the back of her shoulder are very sore. Any ideas on what type of spider or how severe this might be?

For the past few weeks, my mother has been having what looks to be like spider bites. She has them on the back of her neck and the top of her back. They are small, but all of them are very itchy. The bites are small raised layers of skin but are not misquito bites. I have seen small, whitish yellow spiders in our backyard and wonder if these are what has been causing her discomfort. Please if you have any idea what this is tell!

We live in Las Vegas. I noticed a bite on my son’s calf this morning. It has a puncture in the middle of a raised red lump. There’s a white area around that with a raised red semi-circle around the bottom of the bite mark. And the area around the bite is swollen. He says it doesn’t hurt but is itchy. Any ideas?

He already has his “well-check” doctor’s appointment tomorrow morning. Can we wait to go see a doctor until then?

I have included this photo of the spider bite below.

As the days went on (it is not 1 week later + a day) and my foot is still swollen. I see two tiny red marks under toe 3 and 4 , but no purple or discolor, no itching just pain when I put pressure on it. One moring I woke up with no swelling, but as the day went on and i walked around, the swelling came right back. What is this? and how long will the swelling keep up? Help

What started out as a white dot turned into something much more painful! I put Neosporin + Pain Relief ointment on it with a circular bandaid. Unfortunately my skin reacted to the bandaid and the mark got worse. On Monday I was in a lot of pain by Tuesday the white dot turned black in the very center and a blister and formed and popped while I was working.

The doctor said the mark looked like a brown spider bite. He also said it was infected. He prescribed Augmentin and a warm compress 20 minutes on 20 minutes off. I just put the compress on a little while ago. I took it off and it has stayed for for at least 30 minutes and the bite started oozing pus and blood! I freaked out and wiped it off with a sterile pad (you can get them at any pharmacy).

The pus is coming back and it’s starting to ooze again. I don’t know if the bite is healing or not. Tuesday I have another appointment with my doctor. He said the bite will take some weeks to heal. The scab is turning black, the pus surrounds one side of it and the skin is dark red around the outside. Further out there is a big pink ring of skin that is getting more swollen as the days go on.

I’m starting to get nervous and will go to the hospital if necessary.

I would not wait on this and instead, go to another doctor and seek advice without telling that doctor you have already seen someone else. If you tell them, they will excuse themselves, check the computer and compare notes.

Once she or he tells you what they think it might be and what they would do, then let them know about the other doctor.

This sounds like it is getting worse, not better and if you wait too long, it may do more damage! I am not trying to scare you, but me, I’d be getting a second opinion.

Ask the doctor the difference between a brown spider and a brown recluse spider or sac spider. If the doc has to do research, then they probably have not had too many bites come their way.

Hi. I live in Clinton, MS and I believe that I was bitten by a spider a couple of days ago. I remember just lying in bed, and all of a sudden there was a really bad stinging sensation that radiated from just below my elbow and ever since the pain has progressively gotten worse. Although there is no visible bite mark on my arm as of yet, my arm is severely sore and swollen from my bicep down into my forearm.

My 5 year old daughter has woken up 3 times this summer with what I thought may be mosquito bites because they are just a red bump, but realized they are much bigger and probably spider bites. The first one was on her leg and the second one just below her shoulder blade.

This one she has now (which I noticed today) is almost directly on her elbow and is swelling up like the other ones did in the past. I believe them to be spider bites, but the ones in the past have gone away after about a week and never showed anything else again until this new one.

I wanted to know if she is just having a mild reaction to a spider bite or if there are any serious species in my area that I should be aware of. I live in Canada, right on the Michigan border, near Detroit. I didn’t think we had any poisoinous spiders in this area, but the spider I caught looks very similiar to the brown recluse spider I just saw on this website. It may not be the same spider at all, but I wanted to send a picture just incase.

I have it in a container still and do not have access to a camera until next week, but any information that you have so far would be appreciated. My daughter is complaining that it hurts to touch and benedryl does absolutely nothing…….we just waited it out until it eventually went away.

I was bit by a spider dont know what type it was but I waited a week before seeing a doctor and it was so bad that I ended up with a staph infection. I advise anyone with a spider bite treat it right away.

I was in pain couldnt sleep had trouble sitting it was inside my thigh.
I also had a lot of blood and pus..

I got two spider bites from baby spiders. I know they were babies because I somehow got a spider egg sack attached to my jeans after I went on a walk outside (and then I had baby spiders all over me). Anyway, I got bit by two of them. Are baby spiders more of a concern than adults? I don’t know what kind they were – they were white to grey and very small (bodies only a few mm long). I know baby snakes have trouble controlling there venom and generally inject all of it into a bite, while adults can control their venom and only inject what they think they need (and sometimes none at all). Is it the same with spiders? Anyone know?

I got my spiderbite either the night before last or early yesterday morning. It started out looking like a mosquito bite, but has gradually gotten a bad fever in the area and it has increased in size from less than the size of a dime to now about 4 x 2 inches.

The spider bite is on the inside of my right knee and continues to swell. Unlike some of the pictures I’ve seen here, I can’t see any puncture marks. I can feel the spot where I could’ve been bitten, but it’s all so hot and swolen that I’m not really sure. I’ve tried everything from benadryl to old home remedies and nothing has worked.

The pain is now starting to travel up and down my leg, and is still swelling. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can even just relieve the pain? Thanks for your help!

We were recently on vacation in upper Michigan and my husband got peppered with bites at night, so did my daughter. My son-in-law and myself never got one bite. What could it be? My daughter didn’t get as many when she wore long pajamas to bed. They itch terribly and the itch seems to intensify at times. Is this spider bites?

I was bitten while wearing shoes and I am not sure if the spider was in shoe, but I noticed my foot burning about 12:30pm and within an hour my foot was in great pain and swelling.

Spider Bite on Oscar's Foot 2By 3:30pm I was in the emergency room because it became difficult to breath, was very hot and sweating. The doctors treated me for anaphylactic shock; since then I continue to have difficulties with my foot.

My foot is still extremely swollen and I have a small white circle around the bite that is much more noticeable. My foot swells more severely when not elevated and even now, three days later, I am still in a lot of pain.

Im not exactly sure if what I have is a spider bite. a couple days ago I woke up with a small red bite that looked like a mosquito bite and itched like one as well. after about less than a day the bite seemed to form a red patch of about half in inch around where the bite was. Im still unsure of what sort of bite it is but after looking at pictures on google and reading symptoms from websites it seems similar to a spider bite. if you may have any information of what it could be, I would greatly appreciate it. thanks.

I was bitten by “something” on 8/17/2007 and what I thought was a mosquito has turned into a nitemare! Started out as a red bump, progressed to a blister and now, it just looks like my leg is rotting away. Not real sure doctors in my area know what to do, as this doesn’t happen often around here.

Bite marks approximately quarter inch apart and was bitten 2 nights ago. The bite area is itching, but I appear to have what looks like a chemical burn around both of my eyes, and all of the moisture is drying up making my eyes look like I’m about 90yrs old instead of (smile…).

I live near Bishop, California. I was bitten a few years ago. It was late at night when I was in bed. I was on my stomach and felt something crawling on the back of my knees. I was so tired I didn’t do anything, just went to sleep. A day or so later I was at the gym, and in the mirror saw red swollen bites on the back of my knees.

The red was 3″ in diameter, with a raised red bump in the center. A few days later I looked and the red was a bruised black color. It didn’t hurt, but did itch some. Sometime later I had a scheduled doctor appoinment and mentioned it to her, and she told me I had been bitten by a venomous spider. There was still some evidence left at that time. I normally take antihistimines, so I wonder if that decresed the pain and itching.

So if you have a bite that goes away in a few days, I doubt it was a venomous spider.

Reply: to Laura, #10, I suspect that the bite you may have is a flea bite, not a spider.

    The symptoms I have are:

Painful bite, about like a prolonged ant bite (the small black Los Angeles variety) that hurt for about two hours. After about four hours of swimming in a chlorine treated pool, It had a white head on it, but I was unable to squeeze anything out of it, the flesh around it was soft and concave.

On the second day the area is red for about a two inch diameter oval , there is a lump under the skin that is about 3/4 inch across and is tender, in a bruise like way. the lump feels like it is attached inside to muscle, not just under the skin, much like a deep oversized pimple. The very center of the bite, about a 3/16th diameter area, is very soft.

This is the second day, so who knows !! maybe Ill post again for ya.

but this is an example of listing symptoms : )

Got this bite about a week ago, it looked like a mosquito bite, and itched like crazy. Didn’t think anything of it until a couple days went by and I noticed i’d scratched the *blister* off and it left a red ring very similar to a tick bite, but definitly a spider bite as there were two definite *fang* marks in the center.

I kept a close eye on it, the center is white and has a small blister around one of the hair folicles, which now that i’ve read more on this site, I will not pop. The skin in the center seems to have peeled off (several layers) but there is no sore, scab or pain, just mild swelling and still a crazy itch. I also noticed several bruised patches surrounding the bite, up to 6 inches away from it.

The picture below is what it looks like today:

    Spider Bite on Suzi

There is no tell tale *blue or black * in the center, but Im 99 percent POSITIVE its a spider bite and not a tick bite (there is also very little redness around the prominent red ring, leading me to believe its not the typical lyme disease bullseye, yet its totally round, uncharacteristic of a reclue bite. I have a history of mind reactions to common allergins such as poison ivy (no reaction at all as well as oak or sumac) and mosquito bites rarely bother me.

Even when I had chicken pox I had a total of 98 that lasted 3 days. Id really like to know what it was that bit me, as I have a 3 year old, and I can only assume the reaction she would have would not be as mild.

    Any info would be helpful!

I was bit by somthing about 2 months ago. I was in bed, and I felt something itching between my right toes. I ignored it thinking it was an ant bite or something. A few days later it was itching again, and hurting a little, I looked at my toe, and it had a blister on it, and my toe looked swollen and red. The blister was bothering me so I popped it.

I went to the doctor and he said it looked like I had a bad reaction to something that bit me, but that it looked like it was getting better. After that the skin on my toe was dying, and I cut my toe nail down pretty low, and it didn’t hurt, but there was more dead skin.

A few weeks later I developed a very tiny blister in the same spot, and I popped it as well, it was very itchy. So the last few months, I have been getting these small blisters all over my toe, and I pop them, and put anitbiotics on it. Then last weekend, I was at the movies, and my toe was itching so I scratched it, and felt that I had just accidenatlly popped a large blister. Now since then the area where the blister was popped has caused the skin to peel away.

What should I do this is getting annyoying, and I want it to go away! Also I have not received any symptoms from it other than itching.

I was bitten on the 16th of Aug and it was a very sharp, painful bite. I did not see anything nearby to identify what bit me. On Friday it was red and itchy. On Saturday morning I could see two puncture marks and a very red, hard, hot irregular circle and around that a large pinkish irregular area. It was very itchy. The area was swollen and we went to the hospital where they could not say what bit me, but I was given an antibiotic. Today, the 25th of Aug, I feel very sick. I have a bad cold, feel pains in my neck and am wondering what is happening.

I don’t have any photos right now, but I’ll see if I can get around to taking some.

I live in Western Michigan and I woke up this morning to a bite on the outside of left foot.

There were two reddish-purple circles under the skin that looked almost like bruises, about the size of the tip of a large sharpie marker or maybe a bit larger, and the circles were coming together like a Venn diagram.

These circle were inside of a swollen area that was very very white and hard to the touch, and around that white circle was a red ring.

I sat and watched the “bruises” underneath the skin dissipate, and eventually disappear, taking both the red ring and the white with it.

Now there is just a bright red, hard to the touch, swollen red spot on my foot.

That bruising, white circle, red ring “phenomena” has occured once since about 7 hours after I noticed the bite, and I again watched it go away.

I saw one brown spider on the ceiling of our bedroom, but it got away before I could make my boyfriend get a closer look at it… and they all look brown to me.

Has anyone had an experience like this and should I be worried about anything?

Update 8/27/07 – Before, my bite was more of a burning and stinging… And now it’s very very itchy… In fact it makes my whole foot itch… It’s just a big red mark, about 1/2 in – 1 in across, with two red puncture marks, about 2-3 centimeters from one another, inside.

    Any ideas?

Our five year old Grandson had small bite on back of upper leg; we went for a physical for kindegarten and the bite was small at that time. The doctor (four days later) said some kind of insect had caused this bite. Today it is now a very large lump and very sore to touch. There is a small pocket of pus at top and I’m wondering if this could be caused by a brown recluse spider? What should I do as it is Sunday and the doctor’s office is closed; should I bring him into the emergency room or wait until Monday?

    Thanks,

My husband was bitten by an unknown spider (perhaps a brown recluse since we live in so. IN). He did not get a look at the spider. His wound is almost like a knot w/ a small pore like opening. The knot is about the size of a dime and is slightly red. The pore opening is not oozing, and is the size of a pencil tip. It is sore to the touch. Please help if you can. Thanks

My Mom has an insect bite that has “tracks” like the insect gripped her arm & then bit. The bite festers & is not responding to antibiotic ointment. Although she is 85 yrs. old, is this a sign of a bite that will need medical care?

I’m not sure if the picture below is a spider bite. I got it while helping a friend move stuff out of his garage in a suburb of Los Angeles. I don’t remember being bit.

    Spider bite on Joes finger

This is 48 hours later. It started out as a small hard bump with not much color. Now it is bright purple/red. You can see there is a slight swelling of my fingure compared to the other. I have no other symtoms other that it is really itchy. The shiny stuff is cordazone cream.

I was bit by some type of spider, I think. It bit me on the inside of my pinkie toe and within 24 hours it formed several pus filled blisters. I broke the blisters to release the pus and have been cleaning the area. Now more blisters are forming in other areas of the same toe and my skin is peeling. It hurts and itches very badly. What kind of spider might have bit me? I feel fine otherwise. No headaches or anything.
    Thanks!

I woke up three days go and when i got in the shower i felt this sore knot on the back of my leg which seems to have gotten bigger and bigger. So finally that night i decided to see what the problem was and when i looked i noticed that it had a blister on it. I got a safety pin and popped it and out come something green. Later that night i rested on the couch because i could not lay down in the bed, only to find another one. Is this really a spider bite?

6 days ago I noticed what I thought was two mesquito bites in the same area. Not knowing any better I started scratching it. The next day it really starting to itch and it got even bigger. It turned really red and developed small bumps which started to hurt. The next day when I checked on it, the bumps turned into small blisters which popped that evening and was pretty painful.

I have been putting neosporin on the bite to help it heal. Now it looks like it is healing/drying out and it is a dark purplish color. I have noticed that my right leg and butt seems to be really sore and I sometimes have pains in my leg all the way down to my foot. My bite is on my right butt cheek so I am wondering if that has something to do with it. Now it looks like I have a huge bruise. Can you please tell me what this might be and what I should do about the bite. I never did see the spider if that is what it was!

Thanks for your help I appreciate it.

Hi, I have read a lot of these comments and all are from the USA. I am from England and was bitten by a spider (confirmed by the doctor today) whilst asleep 2 nights ago. I was up early to go to work and I felt my ankle itch and thought I’d been bitten but didn’t know what by what.

Over the next day it became swollen and I could see two puncture marks in my skin about 1/2cm apart. It is very red now with blistering on the bites and the area over my ankle is swollen and red. Around the actual bite is a circle of a deeper red ( maybe this is infection). I have been to the Doctors and my lymph glands in my groin are swollen and tender as is the rest of my leg.

I am taking antibiotics as I have an infection from the bite. I have done some research and this is very rare in England. I have no idea what kind of spider this could be but I thought I would share it with this very interesting forum.

I have to agree with some comments about why people wait to see the doctor. I am in a lot of pain and in a short time span. If you get bitten by a spider…see a Doctor ASAP!

I just noticed a round red spot about a 1/4″ in diameter with redness spreading out to about an inch in diameter.

I’m out in my flower gardens, weeding and such most days. I see spiders and don’t think much of it. I thought this was an ant bite at first, however it is now harding and I’ve had burning in this leg, thinking it was from using muscles not used regularly.

Please advise. I’ve marked the outline of where the redness is now and put triple antibiotic ointment on it with a bandaid over it and am watching it. If the redness spreads beyond the mark, I intend to go to the emergency room.

The only other thing I could compare it to is a boil that is festering and doesn’t have a head to burst yet.

Your advice would be most appreciated.

i was out at a festival in london and noticed on saturday night that there was what looked like a spider bite on my leg. It was mildly red all around with a centre that looks like a bite which kept getting redder and more swollen and now the ring is about an inch and a half wide (not perfectly circular) and so red it nearly looks purple.

It is also extremely itchy but i have only been scratching around it and never directly on it. I am worried as it seems to keep growing and now 4 days later it is pretty big. I also don’t want it to scar as it is on my shin! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

I was bitten 10 days ago (Aug 19) by what I assume to be a spider – I did not see anything nor did I feel anything. As time has passed, the bites became larger, itch like crazy, and now have tiny blisters on them. They are the size of a quarter about an inch apart on my inner forearm

    Sacramento Ca
Last week my ex-husband was bitten on his stomach while cleaning a junk pile in his yard. Initially he thought it was a mosquito bite and hadn’t felt it when it occurred, but said that he had brushed several small light brown spiders off himself while working.

By the next day he started feeling headaches and slept for about 36 hours. The headaches have continued and the wound has grown over the course of the last five days, he said progressing to a large red area with a raised central lump and two small whiteheads on top much too painful to touch.

Yesterday morning the boil opened up on its own and started draining. Last night he came by my place on his way to the hospital and showed me the bite for the first time. The bright red area surrounding it is as big as my hand, heel to finger tip. The wound opened up within hours to a 50 cent sized, round raised (1/2 inch high) volcano shaped ulcer with yellow splotches and bloody pus draining out of it. It looked like the inner flesh was erupting up and out through the middle.

The entire area was too painful to touch, he said even his t-shirt brushing it was excruciating. I took a pic, but haven’t been able to download it to my PC yet. Not being squeamish, I didn’t run to the bathroom and vomit the way he said his roommate did, but when I saw that I took him straight to the ER at Sutter General.

The ER doc stated it was simply a staph infection. He then injected some lidocaine into it and proceeded to open it further with a scalpel. Evidently, from my ex’s screams, I don’t think the local anesthetic did much to relieve his pain, but the ER Dr didn’t seem to care and pretending not to notice proceeded to squeeze and suction the wound. Personally, I think he was a bit of a masochist. Mostly blood came out because it had been draining all day on its own, and the Dr acted like it wasn’t any big deal, just business as usual.

When we told the doctor that it started out as a probable spider bite he didn’t seem to want to believe it, insisting that staph exists in everyone and that now and then it erupts into a boil like that one, for no accountable reason. He then packed the wound with about a 3 inch strip of medicated (tape?) gauze and put on a loose dressing. He prescribed my ex with two different antibiotics, one to be taken once a day and the other to be taken twice a day and told him to see a Dr in 48 hrs to have the packing removed.

All well and good but, knowing my ex, he won’t get the scripts filled and will most likely show up here asking me to remove the packing for him tomorrow or the next day. Well, we’ll see how it goes in the next week or so. I just hope that this wound doesn’t progress like some of the pics I’ve seen here (which it might if he doesn’t follow the Dr’s orders).

This is on his stomach after all and if it were to go as deep as some of them do (or if they have to surgically remove dead tissue), there just isn’t much between the flesh on his stomach and vital organs besides abdominal muscle. He seemed to know before going in that it was nothing to take lightly, but the attitude of the ER doc seemed to make him feel like he was being a baby about the whole thing, which with this man is really not a good thing. Does anyone have any comments about treatment they’ve received and how well (or not) it worked, for a wound such as this? If so, please post!

My husband recently got bitten by a what seems to be a spider. It looked similar to a pimple or ingrown hair, so he tried to pop it. Nothing came out, and now it has been about 4-5 days and it is starting to swell even larger. While there is no black or blueness to it, there is a huge knot under the skin, redness spreading about 6-8 inches above and below the bite (which is around his forearm area) and he is starting to feel nauseus and weak in that arm. Is this something that we need to take to the DR. or just continue cleaning it with alcohol? Please let me know soon I dont want to wait to long…

    Red Spider Bite

I have what i believe is a spider bite. There is a tiny black spec in the middle surrounded by red. It is hot, itchy and the red area keeps growing in size. So, it is probably infected. I am going to the doctor, but any other advice would help as family physicians don’t always have the right answer or treatment!

    #376. August 31st, 2007 at 7:56 am

I can’t really say for sure that this is a spider bite but from what I have seen at your site, I believe it is. About 9 days ago, I woke up with what seemed like an ingrown hair or a very painful pimple. It was located just above my right elbow on my forearm. I really didn’t think much of it.

I figured I‘d give it a couple of days and then pull it out with some tweezers no big deal right? Wrong before I knew it, my “pimple” had now turned into a volcano like shape with a big red ring around the center. It was maybe an inch to an inch and a half radius easy. Now instead of the little white head bothering me, this volcano like shape was starting to really hot and the skin around it felt really dry and tough.

Now before I know it, everyone is telling me that I got a bad spider bite and need to take care of it! I panic, go on the internet and start looking up spider bites. I may not know what type of spider bit me but I’m damn sure glad it wasn’t a brown recluse!

I live in California and from what I’ve read, they really don’t have brown recluse in Cali. Well, at least, that’s what I find out. But now a days, anything is possible and I could be wrong. One thing I can say is that my bite does not look half as bad as brown recluse victims.

I have managed to get the red ring around the volcanic like shape to diminish and have seems like to have flattened it quite a bit. this I achieved by taking antibiotics (orally and topically), soaking my bite in almost boiling water mixed with epson salt and by taping a small piece of aloe vera leaf over the bite, held by to Band-Aids. It was something that was suggested to me to try.

So far I have had good results. Here is a picture of my bite. If all goes well, I will send some updated pictures in the days to come.

I don’t know if I am supposed to write all this in a comment at your site or do I send you my pictures and story to you first? Can you please let me know? I really appreciate you taking the time to make a site like yours for people like me. A site to share info. Thanks!

On Friday 8/31/2007 I awoke to a sore feeling on my forehead. Upon palpation I discovered a knotted region that looked and felt like I’d been hit by a baseball. I have pain radiating from the knotted area down the sides of my face, halfway down my cheekbone, and it has recently been accompanied by numbness.

Four hours after discovery the left side of my nose has gone partially numb. The actual knot is raised several millimeters and is about the size of a quarter, and including the swollen area around it is about the size of a silver dollar. I haven’t found an actual entry wound on the knot, even on photos taken with a digital camera with macro zoom. I have ruled out bedbugs, spider mites, dust mites. It does not itch, it hurts. There’s nothing oozing and no ulceration, the skin is smooth.

When I ice it the ice doesn’t provide much relief. Wiping it with alcohol causes blotchiness. I’m taking antihistamines and anti-inflamatories but nothing seems to help. This happened in NorthWestern New York, indoors, and we have at times seen various kinds of spiders, centipedes and house centipedes in the house. I’ve not been able to identify what critter caused this.

    Insect Bite on Tina's face

I have included the picture above and shows eyeliner marking the regions. The area in the solid circle is the knot, the area in the dotted circle is the swollen area, and the lines on the side of my face and under the brow are the areas of radiating pain and partial numbness/desensitization.

I’ll start by saying I am covered in spider bites, but I live in a very wooded area, so it comes with the territory. I have one in particular that has been around for a week. After the first day, there was a read circle about 2 inches across around it that extended all the way from the bite area. This morning, I noticed that the red ring is now replaced with about 10 small circular bruises that look almost like someone poked me over and over with their finger. It is no more painful that any other bite I have. Any thoughts??

I live in Des Moines Iowa and I’m at work. I got bit 4 times Wednsday when I was sleeping. I have no idea what kind of spider bit me but I think maybe I’m getting in trouble with these bites. I don’t have a way to send photos. All 4 bites have a black spot in the middle and their starting to open up. The bites are on my stomach and it burns a lot. 1/2 of my stomach is firey red and very very hot. Except for the burning it seems like the area is numb. Calamine lotion helps with the burning. My 11 year old daughter woke up yesterday morning with a 1″ swollen area between her shoulder blade and hip. Yesterday it was whitish center and red non cemetrical circle around the outside. Today it has a bluish/purple off centered dot in the middle. See the picture below:

We have traveled a great deal this summer to south central US, hiked all over the Pocono Mtns, various cities all in the US. Could we have brought back a spider that we should be concerned with?

Outside area size of dime and pink. In the center a tiny pea size bubble filled with pus. Breaks easily and then the area is just raw looking. One night I felt a pinch and was surprised to see the above looking area the next morning. This morning I have another. Slow to heal and area stays discolored (small and dull pink) for a long time.

Only area in my bedroom not cleaned is my night stand. I’m taking it apart in the morning.

I live in a desert-type area of west Texas.

I woke up sunday morning and my ankle sore so I looked at it and thought it was a burn of some kind, then at church, the pastor’s wife looked at it and said it looked like a brown recluse bite because she just got over one. I have included the picture below.

    To Allison (Oxford, England)
I recently experienced the exact same symptoms you did. I was just wondering if you found out what exactly it was. I was out of town when it happened and I never went to see a doctor like an idiot! I first though it was a mesquito bite then it started to swell up. It turned into a bunch of blisters on top of the bite and they finally popped and dried out and now I have scabs and it’s healing. During all of that my groing was swollen also, and my muscels in my leg were very sore for a day.

Friday i woke up with a sore in my left nostril. By Friday evening it was causing severe pain in my nose and head. I ending up in the ER late Sunday night because the pain was so intense. The ER doctor said it could be an infenction or a possible insect bite.
He gave me Antibiotics and Steriods along with pain pills.
Last night I noticed pus running out of my nose, which has been so tender and red that I can stand to touch it. I gently applied pressure, and a thick green pus started draining out. Alot of my pain went away at the time, but this morning, now that i can actually get a better look at my nostril, there is a small hole that is still draining not only pus, but a harder cyst like substance. My temperature is now below normal, and I just feel very ill, and the skin on my nose and around the ulcerated spot looks like it’s peeling. Does this sound like a spider bite?

    Tampa, FL

bitten on left forearm, near elbow. Swollen area is approx 3″ diameter around the bite. Bite looks to be a pimple-looking spot. Area is swollen around 1/4″ to 3/8″ out from the arm. No noticeable “hole” or “holes” to speak of. Painful to the touch, and throbs while resting.

    HI
My story is similiar to #4 but I was bitten a few weeks ago on my belly near my thigh. The spot turned red and was hot to the touch with a black dot in the middle…I couldnt really see if it was to puncture holes or anything, but a day later it developed a black pusy pimple which I popped. When popped bloody pus came oozing out in a steady stream, followed by blood and severe pain. I put some bag balm and steriod cream on it to stop the itching and infection, but it just seemed to get worse. Now a few weeks later…I have 3 more that are forming and nothing seems to be working. They are very painful and hurt a great deal. I live by Buffalo Ny and all I have ever seen were daddy long legs, until last year when I spotted a white spider. Now my mother had the same symptoms and hasnt had anymore since. The ER said it was just a common spider bite and gave some anitbiotics and sent us home. Please help me…I have exhausted my search on this matter.

For Vicki and man with small red circles:
I am not a physician, but I would look into ringworms. Especially since the man has more problems after being in the basement and then feels relief after showering. Check with a dermatologist maybe you could just call one or call your physician and ask him aboiut the possibility.

I was bitten by a bug and I’m not sure if it was a spider or not, and that’s what I’m worried about. It is located on my leg, right below my knee where my leg bends on the right side. There is a mosquito bite-like bump which is surrounded by a large welt, about an inch in size. It doesn’t hurt, and it only itched the first couple hours that I noticed it, and it itched very, very, VERY little.

There is also a small bump right by the area where I was bit, and it itches and looks EXACTLY like a mosquito bite. I don’t remember feeling pain when I was bit, and my dad said that he was 100% sure that it was just a mosquito bite. (I’m a HUGE worry-wort, though) I can’t help but be scared that something bad is going to happen to me, like the things I’ve heard about brown recluse spiders, and that’s why I’m looking for your advice.

Please, if you read this, and you think you’re pretty sure what bit me, PLEASE tell me. Thank you, and I’ll keep you updated on what happens to the bite.

I got bit by what i dont know and assume a spider. There are plenty at my job and it happened two days ago. The bite area was itchy at first, then became very painful and now swollen. The bite looks like fluid in the center and very red around it and once again, it is itchy. I don’t know what to do.

I live in Lebanon Oregon, and Sunday or Monday evening 9-2-07 or 3-07
I think I was bit by a spider. At first I thought it was a mosquito, and I put Hydrocortisone cream on it because I found myself scratching my leg on the arm of my loveseat. But as the night went on it was making me crazy because I’ve always been told not to scratch it spreads the poisons quicker or something.

Here is a picture of the spider bite.
    Spider Bite Sumtimesme

By the next morning I thought it was better until I stood up on it. See its just above my ankle on the inside of my left leg. But by that night I found another bite on the other side of my leg just about on the ball thing on my ankle. This one isn’t bothering me that much though. So by the 2nd night I had finally scratched the top of the inner one off.. *I know I’m bad* but yesterday it was finally not itching but it was warming.

Now it appears to be spreading or I’ve some how bruised it all the way around it. It looks bad. I’m posting this to ask, should I go to the hospital? I haven’t seen a Dr. in probably 12 yrs. And I have no insurance. Please some one tell me will it just go away? Thanks scratching in Oregon. ha ha
