Found this climbing the wall of our garage in Corona, California. It’s actually smaller than another one we found in the pool last week that looked the same. Two kids under five so your help is especially appreciated. Thanks!!!

Did anyone identify #246? I found one of them crawling REALLY FAST across the garage floor the other night (seriously, really, really fast). It seemed to curl up around my shoe to attack me as I stepped on it! I haven’t been able to find any other descriptions or pictures about what it might be. Please help! I’m located in Boise, Idaho.

Hello, I hope someone can help me identify this spider. I live in the Lansing, Michigan area, which is in the southern central part of the lower peninsula. I have never seen this spider before and I have lived in the area for over 20 years. It is approx. 2.25 inches with the legs; the body is about 5/8 of an inch long. It is mostly brown with black markings on its back and the tips of its legs are also black. I found it in my basement in the window curtains. I did not see a web anywhere around. Its general shape reminds me of a hobo spider although the markings on the back are not the same and it is bigger than a hobo spider. Thanks for your help!

there is a spider living on the stoop of my apartment building. it has a large web (over six feet). the spider is brown with black stripes and/or spots. the thorax is tan. i watched it eat another spider after what looked like a fight. its semi-fuzzy looking and has large fangs. i just don’t want my dog to be bitten by a brown recluse… otherwise, its pretty cool.

That looks just like a wolf spider! Check out the section of this site that covers the wolf spider and you will see comments with similar pictures.

Found this spider outside. Rather large web, estimated to be 2 feet across.

Have no idea as to what type it is, having never seen one like this.

No bites, but this spider is outside in our garage door area. Any Ideas on what kind it is? It has been there for days and a nurse friend said a Banana Spider, but the pictures I saw online didn’t look like one. Should we kill it w/ pesticides? Thanks for any input.

Can you identify this kind of spider? It is large and in charge of my front door. I live in western North Carolina.
Looking at others photos, it looks like a southern house spider. The web is super strong like a big net.

I live just East of Knoxville,TN. This spider (001) has been “hanging” out above my front door for about a week. I knocked down the web one night just to see it doing another one in the same spot the next night! Now as of today 8/12 there is another one (002) on the facade of the house. I have three small children and two dogs. I just want to make sure they are not dangerous.

    Thank you,

My husband found a spider in a UPS shipment. It was about the size of a bottle of whiteout. It had a pretty green body with two humps on the back. It has two lightning bolts in black that ran down the body. The legs were green and black and the body also had a brownish orange color around the green. We’re terrified, it jumps and is very aggressive.

the best way, (without burning hairspray) is brake cleaner in a can. the stuff is extremely toxic and will kill it. you could also go with pyrotechnics and spray burning hair spray on it though.

HELP PLEASE…….I live in Southeast Georgia and have been seeing A LOT of these spiders lately. The larger one was found in front of my house under a wet shirt. My son brought the shirt in the house and when he dropped it the spider ran and I caught it to identify. Just a few seconds later while in a glass it laid a large round egg and is still holding to it. It’s legs are less than 1/2 inch long and it is brown. It sort of resembles a fishing spider-wolf spider…I really have no clue. The second one was found underneath a desk in my dining room with an undefined web and is the smaller of the two. It had a round pea sized body is grayish in color with what looks like a violin shape and little spots on it. Please help me. I have 3 young children and am very afraid. I have also found several black widows around my home. PLEASE help me identify them and what can I do to help lessen them. Thank you so very much for your help!

    Sincerely,

    For number 22,

I actually do not believe that is a brown recluse. I have caught many brown recluse in my home in Michigan, where they are NOT native to, and actually had a spider researcher check to see if they were actually brown recluse. They best way to tell is if it has a “violin” on its back. It looks as if the picture you have take the spider has a straight line, which does not resemble a violin. So it might actually just be an impersonator. But Just to be sure I would have someone look into it. Brown recluse are often non-aggressive, but will cause damage if they bite.

I found this spider on my kitchen floor last night. The body isn’t very big (1/2 inch maybe) and the legs are long and thin with some definite hairs (wouldn’t classify it as “hairy” though). It is light brown in color with some stripe like white or lighter color markings on its body. The most noticeable thing I saw were two dark/black sacs (balls, boxer-like) things on its first two legs. They did not appear to have any pincers or fangs attached to them. Just two ball things… They were a lot shorter than the rest of the legs.

Hopefully it is nothing to be alarmed about as it was hanging out in the same area where my dog was.

Thanks for your help in advance!

I found this spider in my garage today and was kinda alarmed. We live in Fredericktown OH, and we are having quite a problem with all kinds of spiders lately. We live behind a man made lake, so I figured that it has something to do with that. This guy was quite large and brown and furry. It was probably the size of a silver dollar. Attached is a picture that I took of it. Is it something I should be concerned about? I also found this other spider which has yellowish legs and has a white sack on its back and it has light grey markings on the sack. This one I sprayed with kitchen bug spray to prevent my cat from eating it. It looked very scary. Is this one anything to be concerned about? I’ve attached pictures of both…the yellow legged spider is dead so it curled up a bit.

    Thanks,
    Heather

I live in Wellesley Ontario, Canada. I need help identifying a spider that I found in my kitchen sink. Usually my husband puts them outside or gets rid of them, however he was out when this happened. I’m horribly afraid of spiders due to a bad experience as a child when I was up north in Perry Sound and was bitten by an unknown spider and admitted to the hospital. Therefore it took all my strength just to get this picture without completely freaking out, but I’ve never seen a spider like this before. Please let me know if it is dangerous in any way.

I’ve found several spiders around my home…in my laundry, my bedroom, my kids room, and today I found about 30+ tiny baby spiders I could barely see on some clothes in my room next to the window…I’m guessing they just hatched because they were so tiny and clear. I’ve searched for a week online and cannot find these spiders anywhere.
I first noticed the problem when I woke up last week with a bite on my leg that bumped up with yellow/brown puss inside and was red all around it about the size of a quarter…it hurt to the touch like a bruise. I’ve got three small children and am terrified they’re going to get bit. We’ve lived in the same apartment for over 4 years and this is the first time I’ve seen these type of spiders.
They start out looking almost like a widow shaped bottom that’s off white with brown markings and light brown legs with dark brown stripes at the bends…then as they mature their bottoms turn all grayish brown and their legs turn redish brown. Their mandibles are very large.

Can you help me id these??

    Thank you for your help,

Hi I live in the lower hudson valley in NY and do have a small forest behind my house. I was going into my pool the other day when I saw the largest spider I have ever seen around my house. It seamed to be gliding across the top of the water in my pool quite easily and was around 4-5 inches including the legs. It was lightly colored, I cant remember exactly but tan with some yellow, i think. I didnt think spiders this large were native to NY and I am extremely curious as to what it could be, if you have any info please let me know.

i need some help. I have a serious phobia of spiders-and anything like that of a spider.
so, today, i saw this really creepy spider, and i have searched google all over to identify it-i wanna know what kind it is, and if it’s deadly or something. To my annoyance, I haven’t had any luck at all identifying it.
Okay, it has the sort of body like a widow, only it’s bigger in size. It is light-brownish. The legs are quite long-just like a widow-and they’re light-brown and black-striped. It was fuzzy-looking, but the hairs were short. The abdomen had a design I’ve never seen before-actually, I haven’t seen anything like the spider itself before.-I’m worried it’s a new species and scientists haven’t discovered it yet, or something.

Anyways, the design looked sort of like light brown and gray zebra stripes. And, in the spot where a black widow would have the hour-glass, it had a sort of design kinda like a die(dice), only it was black with four white dots.
My sister spotted it making a very large web outside our window, and-being a arachnophobia. I sprayed it-and the little dot covered in white silk(which i believed might be the egg-sacks)-with spider killer. I took a picture, but somehow my phone lost it.

    So…can you help me…?

OH! and i almost forgot to mention I live in Connecticut-that’s important info, right?

I live in North-West Oregon, I found two HUGE scary spiders today outside my house. One was a mostly white (huge) body, white striped red/yellow legs (huge)… It was over an inch long and wide. The next one had a black velvety body (huge) with gray/black striped legs (huge), not quite as large as the first one, but still just about an inch in both directions. I am concerned they may be dangerous. Does anyone recognize them? The pictures don’t do there sizes justice.

I found a spider this morning. Its small, round and had about 9 or 10 circular neon yellow spots on its back. It is very distinctive, I went to get my camera, by the time I got back to it, it disappeared. I have been cleaning up its web in the same place for a couple of weeks. What kind of spider is this? I have seen at least a dozen in my house in the past week. When it is alive and legs fully extended it is 2″ across. The fang looking things are what scare me the most. I found this one dead in a fish tank I was moving.

Hello, I have this guy living between the windowpanes in my bedroom. He is about 1.5 inches from tip of back leg to tip of front leg. He doesn’t have access into my bedroom from where he is(even if I open the window) so he isn’t really threatening to me. I was just curious if he is dangerous and what species he is because his fangs are quite big for spiders around central Wisconsin. The odd thing I noticed about his fangs is they get wider near the tip.

    Hey Jen,

Thanks. I have to apologize for not mentioning both photos are of the same spider, just flipped over.

Weird thing is that it was dead. I wonder what killed it?

About two weeks prior to the above spider #1239, I had found another one, identical markings and it too was dead.

Chemicals I put around the house have to contact spiders to kill them, I just found that out.

It has to be a Red Back. The markings are so close.

we have many spiders where I live and one of my relatives found a brown recluse when he was taking a shower one day and we find numerous daddy long legs and other miscellaneous spider species lingering around and the reason I bring these things up is because just a few days ago a bump appeared on my lower right leg and although I have had a history of cellulitis, some spider bites can cause staphylococcus infections which look similar to cellulitis infections so I am wondering if there are any spider species that cause the growth of streptococcus bacteria that may lead to cellulitis, etc?

I found this spider sitting high up on a wall inside a friends house in the San Juan Islands in Washington. When we went to put it in a jar, it didn’t move or try to escape when the jar was set over it on the wall. After we put a lid on the jar and set it one the counter, it started running around and trying to climb up the jar but was unable to. Before we put it in a jar, we watched it sitting on a wall doing nothing for about half an hour. It didn’t appear to have any type of web.

I don’t have aything ferocious like all these photos, but I am use to seeing about a trillion granddaddy long legs (GDLL) each and every year. However, this year there I am seeing something new and am baffled by what it is. It looks like a GDLL in that it has the eight very long legs and they move the same, but this creature’s body is in the shape of an eight. I have seen small one and HUGE ones!

Everything about it is just the same as the GDLL,except the bodyshape….is this some kind of new breed and is it dangerous? They are all over the house, so I hope not!

    A. There are no large hairy spiders in the US that are dangerous.
90% of the large hairy spiders picured are Wolf spiders or close cousins. They are harmless and benefitial insect eaters. They don’t even like being out in the light so you don’t have to look at their ugly bodies unless you disturb their hideout.
    B. Anyone that tells you “I’m pretty sure that’s a brown recluse” Doesn’t know what they are talking about. The Brown recluse has several look alikes, some of which can only be distinguished by an expert. They are outnumbered by their non-poisonous cousin by 10:1. I have actively searched my property in Oregon trying to find one specimen. So far the count is:
    Some other spider 100
    Brown recluse 0
    Relax!

#1207 – I randomly came across a site that shows your spider. It is definitely a Yellow Garden Spider.

These spiders are not particularly dangerous to people, and their bites result in nothing more than a sore, itchy swelling that goes away in a few days.” Apparently that silky stripe (called stabilimentum) it weaves in its web helps afford protection to the spider.

ohkay, my boyfriend woke up one morning with a sore on his armpit, and didnt think nothng of it. so the next day he was still complaining that it was hurting him.2 days after he noticed it it grew into a bump the size of a mosquito bite, it continued to hurt him, and grow.its now the size of a golf ball and a pimple-like bump surfaced, and started to peel.so today a week later he complained that the pain was unbearable!so i put a hot rag on it, because he refuses to go to the hospital, n the bump popped. about 2 tlbs of blood n gook came out, and we have no idea what it is, we live in Cape cod, mass. i tried looking up east coast spiders but i couldnt find any pics that match.im hoping you can help me n tell me if this is a spider bit or not. or what are the side effects.please reply.asap.thank you! xokim117xo@ aol.com

#1207 is a St Andrews Cross Spider (aka Writing Spider or Garden Spider) non-aggressive fairly harmless, beneficial and eats insects.

#1251 looks like a Grass Spider – low risk

#1253 looks like a Hobo Spider – can cause painful blistering bite, may need treatment if bitten.

We have a spider I’ve never seen before in our yard.
She has made a web about foot in diameter.
She is entirely black, about the size of my pinky nail.
The odd thing about her is she has a Crown Like Back Structure.
What kind of spider is this?

Hi, my name is Rachel. I live in the Black Hills of South Dakota, and usually don’t have a spider problem. However, I recently found this critter hiding in a crack in my porch, with a large web spreading between a couple planks. The web is extremely strong (there are now a couple of sticks hanging in midair because my parents want me to get rid of it).

I can’t figure out quite what it is, and can’t get a good picture. It has a large, grayish abdomen about the size of a pinto bean, and its abdomen has symmetrical yellow, white, and black markings that almost make it look like a large tick. The spider’s legs are a rusty red color near the body, and become striped black and white further out.

Please help me out with this, I’d really like to know what this spider is before my parents find more, freak out, and call an exterminator.

OK. i havent been bitten, but im worried. My mom and i found this strange looking spider outside our house. the web was a strange pattern, kinda messed up, and the spider was black with a black and white (spotted) TRIANGLE abdomen. thats all, its abdomen was a triangle. literally. so should i be worried about my cats? and myself and my parents?? Description of spider again is: little black spider with black and white (spotted) Triangle abdomen.

I live in Western, CO and upon working on our septic found what I believe to be a spider. It is mostly black except for the butt. It is fuzzy all over, and the red butt is fuzzy as well and it is not red only in one spot but the whole butt is red. My kids keep wandering over there and I need to know if it is poisonous. Thanks. Please e-mail me back.

I found a spider about the size of a dime in a client’s house in Wake Forest, North Carolina. The body and legs were an brownish-orange color, the back (view from the top) really intrigued me. It resembled gold colored sequins. The gold color is what attracted my attention. Needless to say, since I didn’t know if it was poisonous or not, it was killed.
Anyone have any ideas on what it could be?

Those look kinda like the one I saw in our back yard gate. it was about the size of the latch (the old metal U shape kind) It was about the size of the latch, with thick legs, a light brownish-tan. It had a thick, cottony web that covered a large portion of the gate around the latch (it’s a criss-crossing metal wire fence and gate). I only saw it from below, as it was standing on the web, facing away from me.

Could have been a wolf spider.

We have a BUNCH of spiders around the house – and I can’t figure what kind they are – and more importantly, if their are venomous – we have two small kids, and would hate for one of them to get bit.

These guys range from a half-dollar to a nickle in size – and sometime even sharing the same web.

i would that the white cross design on the back would make identifying easier, but have not been able to find anything, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

We found this on the wall of the staircase leading to the 2nd floor of our bay area (California) home. Kind of looks like a Hobo Spider but the coloring and shape of the abdomen is different from the pictures we’ve seen. When resting it folds its legs under.

Hi, if you have had a bite please read this:

i thought me and my ex boyfriend were getting bites from spiders a few years ago in va beach but later found out they were in fact staph folocus aureus infections. These can be very dangerous and if you have something that swells over a short time and looks like a spider or other insect bite you should seek medical treatment immediately! i ended up in the hospital for over a week and so did my ex more then once.. if you get staph “aureus” you need vancomyasin (bad spelling ) its the only medicine that can treat the specific infection and most doctors don’t actually know that.. :(

    good luck

Looks like a phidippus audax, it is harmless and is good at getting rid of insects in your home. It should have a blue coloured fang base if it is an adult one, and looks scarry. They can bite if intimidated, but not harmful to humans or pets.

Hey I am currently in san jose, ca. I recently found a large-ish spider on my towel that startled me quite a bit. I squished it because 1; i’m not sure what type of spider it was, and 2; i didn’t want to risk letting it bite the infant in our home, although it did not behave aggressively at all.

My camera is broken, so I couldn’t take a pic, but I would like to know what it is, and haven’t seen a photo anywhere that looks like a possibility for its identification.
Here’s a description: (I’m estimating here because i didn’t have a ruler on me at the time)
with its legs spread out naturally, the spider was approximately 3/4 to 1 inch in diameter(including the legs)
it’s main body was about 1/3 of an inch length total.
The coloring was mostly a light brown, with a single darker brown stripe stretching across the abdomen, which was about twice as long as the head part.
Its fangs were quite large and a little lighter than the rest of the body.
I didn’t notice any other patterns on the legs or head.
I have seen this type of spider before; in southeast Idaho. It was underneath a computer desk. Neither time did they act aggressive. I haven’t seen any webs anywhere, nor seen more than one in any given area. In idaho when traps were set out maybe a half dozen of these spiders were caught throughout the house.

If you have any idea what type of spider this could be I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!

hello today i walked out into the garage to talk to my parents and while walking over to the window i noticed a spiders web that wasn’t there before, it was a thick ball like web with a quarter sized hole in the center that led a funnel to the bottom corner of the window, there was a pitch black spider, which was about a half dollar in size.

i live in Monroe Michigan, this is almost unheard of to me, so trying to get rid of it i torched the web but didn’t burn the spider (i wanted to see what the hell made that) and it was huge, big body, loonng legs, and i could see from what i thought looked like hair, there where tons of dead bugs from bees, flies, and wasps. so i went to smash the critter (my mum freaked) and that spider took off faster than i could blink i swear it looked like it jumped lol, but i got it….long story i know but ive seen a couple of these now that im looking, yet…never seen one with a web like that that appeared so fast! we are slightly concerned on what it could be…im sorry i dont have a picture or anything (oh and after i killed it i went back to the corner where it was and seen lil spiders crawling around, hair thin legs, small body, yed big black thorax (if thats the butt) lol sorry not a spider kinda guy ever since they crawled outta my cereal bowl when i was lil
