I found this spider hanging out right outside my back sliding glass door. There doesn’t appear to be a web nearby…and it’s been in the same spot all day. It’s about an inch or so long (maybe a little bigger)…sending photo, too. Could you please tell me what it is?
we have a spider around our house yard that is velvety black, has white rings around it”s legs and blue eyes. So far I haven’t been able to identify what it is. We live in Central Texas.
Think i was bitten by spider during the night left about a 2 inch trail like burn to my skin.what kind of spider would leave a burn type blister?
I have a spider near my shed and it’s about 3 inches long its yellow with black stripes all over its body, the body is roundish, it has 8 legs and are 1/2 inch to an inch long, it’s web is spun in a circular motion like a design and it just sits in the middle of the web, its web is very thick and its stronger than a Black Widow’s web, and the web is pretty big a little over 12inches. I’ve never seen one of these before and i would like to know what kind of spider its is. I took picture’s, but its not a digital camera i’ll have to develop them, but please tell me what kind of spider it is i would really like to know thank you.
I found a spider with a distinct cross on it’s back in white, kind of a brown body -bigger than a dime, big web. Any ideas?
Hi,
last night I found this spider outside. It’s like a brownish black, has a white strip on its legs, two horns on its body and gill looking slashes on its body. Its the size of a quater. Whats is it?
Hello,
We’re trying to figure out what kind of spider this is.
We live in Central Texas and found it on the side of our yard.
Thanks,
Tina
No bite. But I found a spider in my basement (unfinished – cellar like) the other night that sort of scared me due to it’s size. He was “jumping” around very frantically (almost grasshopper like). He was brown in color. Probably about an inch long. From the quick glimpse I got of it, he didn’t look “furry”. I live in Baltimore County, Maryland. Any ideas on what kind of spider this might be?
I found a spider that looked a lot like the one in # 36 except there were a lot more white dots on it’s back making a white cross and it’s legs weren’t so hairy looking. I live a couple hours from the Oregon coast. We were taking an afternoon walk and it were walking down the sidewalk when we stopped to look; it curled up like it wanted to hide.
I found this spider next to my head over my bed. I really like spiders and don’t want to kill it -yet-. Is this dangerous or should I keep it as a pet in a cage?:)
I live in south Louisiana and have a boxer weighing in at about 55lbs. About a week ago I noticed that my dog was not using one of his hind legs. On the first night I noticed he was in discomfort , he cried and moaned and growled all night. That morning was when I noticed he wasn’t walking on one of his legs. He stays outside all day while I am at work, so during the day he stil stayed outside and when he would come in I noticed that he was always tired and would go straight to his kennel and fall asleep from 5 in the afternoon till the next morning. He wouldn’t eat or drink water. Well, finally today I told myself that I would bring him into the vet and get him checked out. But Jake(my dog) seemed almost 100% better. He was running around this morning and jumping on his leg. I noticed that right about his leg on his lower back were two bites. The skin is black and gray with two welps side by side with little blood coming out of the two wholes on top of the welps. I’m still not certain if it was a snake or a spider bite, but he seems to be doing fine. Is it common in dogs, when bitten by a spider to have these symptoms???
Unknown bite, I had bought a vest from my local Wal-Mart and when I stuck it on. On my shoulder if felt like a bee sting at first so I ran into the bathroom to look in the mirror. The bite had swollen instantly later it an associate said it had looked like the unknown insect had bite me twice leaving me with two bite about two inches or more apart from eachother on my back.
The pain for a well was a stinging feeling then later my arm went numb, but then it was burning hot. Now that it has been a day after the bite it, still is hot to the touch and red it also itches. Please can anyone help I know this isn’t much detail but I didn’t see what bite me. Thanks
Lots of strange insects around my house. I have had one bite that left two tiny holes, like fang marks, on my back. I had another bite that was a large hard lump under the skin- – about the size of a silver dollar. It was red and slightly painful, and remained for two months. Finally, I massaged it very firmly and it spread a little larger and changed shape. It looked more like a red ring (doughnut). Has anyone ever had an experience like this?
I just caught a spider tonight that I think may be a brown widow, except the markings are dark brown triangles all over its body. Ever seen one like that?
Thanks
Paula
I found this spider and it is about an inch or two in diameter with its legs on. It has two black stripes running down it head and one on its thorax. It is brown. It was found in North Carolina.
Found this spider in my hotel room outside of Bangkok Thailand. I
wasn’t bitten or anything. Just curious what it might be.
Thanks,
Chris
I saw this spider on the back porch of our condo while visiting Edisto Beach, SC. There was one on the tree in the front of the condo, too. The web was large – the one on the porch was 3′ – 4′, the one on the tree was about 5′ & went from the ground to the side of the tree. The spider’s body was approximately 2″, its legs were each appr. 2″ – 3″.
Can anyone ID this spider?
Thank you,
Sue
Hi,
I live in Northern Indiana, Fort Wayne to be exact. I have found a spider crawling along the wall of my home on the outside. I captured him/her and took some pics. It looks much bigger in the pics than it is. It is actually only about the size of a nickel if that big.
Please help me identify it. Thank You.
Greetings. We live in Jacksonville, FL. My 2 year old son has been
getting bitten at night. Each time we find a bite, we find one of these
spiders camped out along the back of his bed. I haven’t found any other
bugs, and the spider’s web is always empty, so I assume it is
responsible for the bites. This last one must have bitten him 5 times,
with dime-sized welts resulting.
Please help me figure out what this is, and recommend a way to get rid
of them. There have been at least 5 I’ve removed already over the last 6
months. The shape at the bottom of the picture is a dime, so it’s a
little guy.
Thanks,
Jim
I found this spider (see spider picture below) in my in-laws’ backyard. They live in Heath, TX, near Dallas. It was about 1-1/2″ from top to bottom. It was in its web, pretty much flat against a fence. What can you tell me about it?
Thank you.
Kathy
The spiders below seem to thrive in my shed. They sometimes have a small web with a funnel that they hide in. Other times, they have a haphazard looking mess of strands to make up a web. Their bodies, from fangs to abdomen can be as much as an inch or a little more. Their legs are stout.
I live in eastern South Carolina. I’ve not been bitten, but I do LOOK into everything in my shed before I touch it!
Thanks, Wayne
My daughter was bit by something – likely a spider, after a weekend on a camping trip. It was a white space with a red ring – we thought it was a brown recluse. However, the white space just got sort of hard and raised, see image below:
No numbness, no tingling, no redness throughout the arm (bit was on the lower arm). No spreading. Just itched like crazy. That was 2 weeks ago. now, the whiteness has faded. There are little red dots around the ring (which is also faded) – making the “area” affected larger than it was. Is this part of the healing process? Or, should I make a trip to the dr? It hasn’t bothered her, but she has had 1-2 headaches and 1 episode of dizziness that may not be related.
Tammi
picture number 32 is a garden spider they get pretty big an usually have a zig zag in the middle of theyre web they arnt poisonous but are good for keepin other bugs away just creepy looking
Tammi article #122. I would not guarantee what I am about to say as I am no doctor b ut the “bite” in the picture honestly does not look like a bite to me. It looks more like ringworm to me and the description also sounds like ringworm. There are medicines for such thing. Hope this may help some if any at all.
104 Donna….have you seen a doctor? I had a odd thing happen during the summer, thought I woke up with a burn on my lower abdomen, we where camping, assumed I just singed my skin on the camp fire. It was long, and red, and almost a black peeling off type of burn, looked like a blister. I saw a doc a few days later, and there where 3 areas, 2 small and one measuring 7 cm by 15cm. They tested for everything from MRSA to contagious diseases. 4 visits and a new doc later, after watching a news story and bringing in photos, it was confirmed to be a Hobo Spider bite, a cousin of brown recluse. Wound appears 12 to 24 hrs after bite, so unsure if it was at work, home or lake it happened. Took nearly 10 weeks to fully close, due to severity, leaving a large red scar on my abdomen.

That looks like a brown recluse.
Hi my sister got bit today and she said it was white fuzzy and spiky we don’t know if it was a thorn or spider but it certainly started to turn red and swell up Help!
Hello,
My co-worker just found a metallic/copper spider at the bottom of a book case that had a large body and extremely long front legs. She said that his body came to a point in the back. We live in Troy, NY. I don’t know what kind of spider this could be, but I was just curious as to wether or not it might be poisonous.
Thanks,
Anne
Sorry, I have no photo. But it looks similar to April’s spider, #42!
I live in Burlington, Ontario, Canada.
In my basement I have fushia/pinkish carpet, and it is there that I sometimes find a pinkish/fuschia coloured spider. He has been seen sitting on the stairs toward the edges, or in the general hallway. My 3 boys sleep in a bedroom right at the bottom of the stairs, and seeing this spider so close to their bedroom really bothers me! The spider is nearly undectable, as he is the same colour as the carpet. His back rear end section is the only part of him not pink .. that section is dark like a raisin. When sitting on the carpet, he appears to have a dusty covering on top of him …. almost makes me think he is could be of the dust mite family … but he is most certainly a spider.
Hi, I found this beauty inside my mail box. Spider is about 3/4″ long and was making a small web.
Nobody’s been bitten – but I’ve captured an interesting spider that I found in a house that i clean. We live in Puyallup- Tacoma, WA area. It is about the size of a quarter, is orange in color, not fuzzy, had a huge body that has a design of a sword in her back. Almost looks like an orb weaver spider, except she’s not fuzzy. Am very curious — got any ideas about what kind of spider we have?
HI!!

My little sister was in there sleeping and they were worried that it would harm her. i tried looking up information about this spider but i couldnt find anything. it has red and black legs, it is small and shiny, and it has a row of yellow dimond-shaped marks on its Abdomen. if it helps, i live in Tennesse. Hello,
My Wife found this spider inside the washing up glove in the laundry when it bit her.
Minor swelling and discomfort which receded quickly. This fact along with no hits as a venomous species left us with little concern. Released it in the garden the next morning.
Regards,
Jerome
I’ve found several of these spiders in my house- under beds, behind
storage boxes, etc. The spider in the picture below is by far the largest.
I’m living in Khartoum, Sudan, North Africa. They don’t react to bug spray and they’re pretty intimidating to try and squish. I’m worried they might be poisonous.
I haven’t seen one in any kind of web.
michelle, #32 , i think the spider you have found is or looks like a
st. georges cross spider. If so these spiders are not very dangerous and are not common for biting, unless they feel under threat or trapped. other than that i think your safe.
Hi my boyfriend got bit inside my house last night on the arm. His arm had a red bump on it and was burning, very hot. I put insect bite stuff on it and some benedryl cream and then had him take a benedryl pill. This morning the bite has no skin around it and is the size of a dime. He is a black man and the black skin is completely gone …all that is there now is pink underneath skin. We don’t have any idea what bit him. Please help if you can to identify this spider. We did not see it.
Hello,
I need to find out what this spider is, found in Lakeside Ca (San diego County) at night, approximately size of a silver dollar, has black legs, with brown hair and a brown bulb butt. Possibly a recluse of some kind, but doesn’t match the Brown Recluse.
thanks
Thanks for your help.
Update: David discovered that this is a California Trap door spider.
Because the trapdoor spider blends in well with its surroundings when closed, it can easily be missed. These spiders are nocturnal and wait for their prey to pass by the door and then leaps out to attack their prey.
to Sandy, #131,
Hey, look at the picture of my spider on #85…does it match your spider? The reason I ask, I still have not identified this spider, however, I rent a cabin in the summer and have had families from Washington stay there…perhaps a transplant to Alaska while on vacation? When we described it to our dad, we said it was about the size of a quarter. And, yes, it was in an orb web. Still no positive id yet, as to a name.
I found a spider on my bed side table this morning. It was dead. I have no idea what kind it is. I would say that if the legs were spread out it would be about the size of a quarter. The legs are a dark brown color. I could not provide a picture, but perhaps the image below will help.
The body is black, the top of the head is has a patch of a grayish color, the abdomen has this pattern where from the part where the abdomen connects with the head there is a small rectangle that extends half way down the abdomen connecting the rectangle at the bottom is the head of an arrow.
At the bottom of the abdomen is two lines that are connected like an arrow to the sides of the abdomen and is colored in. This pattern has an almost tannish color to it.
Thanks
Alex
i have a spider in my store that is black with a yellow dot on his head. Does any one know what type that is. Note: i did just receive a shipment from Georgia.
Hi I live in Pittston Pennsylvania and recently had a pain in my leg and when i showed my boyfriend he said you have a bite or something on your leg. I do not have a picture to send, but it has two fang marks in the middle of a red bump. it is black and blue around it. I do work at a pet store, i did not find any spiders at me house. any info you can give me would be great. thanks
the spider i found is just like the one on number 28 on your page
its black with white i didnt find it near a web. I live in southern indiana.
I have been bit twice by some bug, a month apart, both on my upper thigh, once on each leg. The bite starts as a red bump, like a mosiquito bite and grows into a red rash. The bit area gets really warm and hurts all the way into the muscle of my leg. It hurt even if I brushed my leg against something.
Tonight, my cat found the FIRST bug I have seen in my apartment, which was a spider. I took pictures of it and posted them above. She found it behind my TV console in my livingroom. I live in Las Vegas.
Could this be the spider that caused the bites? What kind of spider is this? Any information would be appreciated!!
I’ve been finding large (about half an inch) yellow spiders in my New Jersey house today. They are very slender (legs, abdomen and fangs) and hairless. I know that’s not enough information to indentify them with any certainty, but I just want possible indentities- Google can do the rest.
I have NEVER came across and species so frightening, yet so interesting to me at the same time as I do with spiders…..They completely freak me out, yet intrigue me, it’s strange…I want to learn which ones in Canadian homes are generally found
Michelle #32, Sheila #48—
Those both look similar to the Giant Wood Spiders (Nephila maculata) I see outside my house in Japan. Perhaps they’re a North American relative. The Japanese spider is huge and somewhat poisonous, though it is not aggressive.
Hello,
I was wondering if you could help me identify the spider below.
It has built a large web outside of my apartment window and I have never seen one quite like it. I apologize for the lack of clarity in the photo, but I did not want to get any closer. You can see that it is about the size of a nickel. It is bright yellow with red spikes around it’s wide body. Any information you can give me would be helpful.
Thank you,
Krystal
Hello,
I would greatly appreciate your assistance:
I am quite arachnaphobic. I was in the basement of my townhome, in London Ontario and the spider in the picture below happened to be on my basement stairs, slowly trying to venture up to the main floor.
I’m freaked out by daddy-long-legs, so this one was certainly intimidating to me….it moved towards me when I tried to take a step past it to get upstairs…I spent the rest of the day in the basement…..PLEASE identify this spider and let me know if it is a threat or not.
My digital camera is not a very high quality device….but the spider..I managed to capture it in an upside down candle-holder with an envelope slid underneath as a floor for it….
Thank You,
Caleb
For Krystsal, #147,
Hello…I found your spider in my field guide…in case you want to go to the
library and look it up for yourself for more info., it is THE AUDUBON SOCIETY FIELD GUIDE TO NORTH AMERICAN INSECTS AND SPIDERS .
It is called a crablike spiny orb weaver, technically “gasteracantha elipsoides”
Orb weavers spin a web anew each night and are not poisonous. They do hide and stay attached to their web by a signal strand and will drop to the ground if
approached. That actually happened to us w/our spider and so we know it to
be true. The book does go on to say that orb weavers spiderlings overwinter
and begin web weaving in the spring. : )
I live in New England, north of Boston area, and I think I was bitten by a spider. Not sure when, I noticed the wound this morning in the shower. Wound appears to be a single puncture, surrounded by about 1/4 ” white, then about 2″ diameter black/blue circle. It doesn’t hurt, but is slightly tender but I’ve notice reddish thick streak starting at the bottom of the wound earlier this afternoon. Should I stop by the emergency clinic on my way home from work?
I was bit by a spider yesterday. it is a red knot with a faint red circle around it about the size of a half dollar. It really itches. No other symtoms. Is this okay?
Hello,
I live in North Alabama and find these spiders in my house often, can you tell me what type they are?
Thanks,
Randy
Racheal in Rochester,
That is more than likely a barn funnel web weaving spider. You should be able to google tegenaria domestica. I had someone telling me that is was a hobo spider. The only way you can tell the difference for sure is to look at the sex organ under a microscope. Don’t worry to my knowledge there are no Hobo spiders in NY either. Go out in your yard some morning and you should see some funnel looking webs.
My son who loves and collects spiders found a strange one this morning its not really big its a brownish colour and has a perfect small lighter brown cross on its back like its been branded. My son is upset because i wont let him handle spiders until we idenifiy them. we live in newzealand and dont have a huge poisonous spider problem here but ive never seen this one before and my son has heaps of books and charts on spiders. And help would be great.
we found a orange and black leged spider(lower leg orange and uper leg black ) with a tanis or pale yellow body. any one know what it might be
#70 is Gasteracantha Cancriformis, a type of Spiny Orb-Weaver. I am also in Florida and have had one of these beauties spinning a web on my back porch for a couple weeks now. No need to worry about them, they are harmless. It is sometimes called the crab spider by locals, but there is another spider which is officially called the crab spider.
Can you help me identify this type of spider? I noticed it at the backside of our mobile home.
Kinda curios to what kind it is………….and if it is dangerous!!
Thanks,
Pam B.
Hello,
Earlier today, 1/8/08, I was cleaning my brother’s car and I came across this spider just chilling’ in the car door. I don’t know if it was hibernating, or if spiders even do that, but it was curled up. See the picture below.
Its back legs have yellowish orange stripes on them and the front four legs are about twice as long as the back four. Just out of curiosity, I wanted to know what kind of spider this is. Please get back to me if you know.
Thank you,
TiA
Jim,
Saw your website and thought I would send you the spider picture below.
We just moved to Santa Clara, CA and after a couple of weeks, I opened our coat closet and found the following spider crawling up the closet door.
I would like to know what kind of spider it is.
Thanks,
Randy
Randy from N Ala #152
Hi Randy I live in northern Alabama too and what is in your picture is a Pholcidae “Daddy long legs or Cellar Spider” similar to the Harvestman the daddylong legs most people know. But the Harvestman don’t make webs and the Phoicidae do, one more thing they are harmeless to humans and pets. But can make a mess with their webs. Hope this helps.
Sean
I see this spider all the time in our yard, wondering what it is…
Hi, found a spider by the pool today. On the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia. It was about 25mm, big brown hairy bum and a heart shaped body, with solid looking legs. Any ideas appreciated!
I was wondering if you could me identify a spider. It was found by my bathtub, it was really, really red and the back sack was white. It was about 3/4 in. long. Sorry no pic.
Thanks!
I live in Portland Oregon and saw a spider outside of my apartment. It had a brick red back with I believe three white dots going vertically down its red back. It had long legs and moved very slow. It looked like a brown recluse but of course wasn’t. We have a dog we take to this area on daily basis and are concerned the spider might be dangerous. Any help would be appreicated, thanks!
Hello,
I have included below a picture of a spider that is very common around our house. We live near a river and it is very wet around our house… these spiders are both inside and outside (this was taken in very cold temperature)
I want to say they are wolf spiders, but I’m not sure… we literally have hundreds around our house and I hate spiders.
Any ideas?
Hello,
I would greatly appreciate help on identifying the spider below.
Thank you!
Fredrik
For Derek, #165
My thoughts were a hunstman spider and when I looked it up, some of your info matched. The range was exculsively Florida and they hang around in the woods, garden and house walls. My source says that they are appreciated in many southern homes as free exterminatos of household insect pests…cockroaches, etc.
Check it out…heteropoda venatoria
For Fredrik #166, your spider is definitely a wandering spider. It eats insects.
(Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Spiders) Apparently, some of them are transported into North America on plants and fruit because they are typically tropical. Their description and picture match your picture exactly,…”Cephalothorax yellowish to orangish brown. Legs orangish brown to brown, palest close to body. Abdomen grayish yellow to black. Body sparsely coated with fine down. ..” : )
it’s winter here in PA and cold outside. SoI have 4 small itchy mosquito like bites on my arm. Is there any spiders that leave bites like that?
We have been spotting these spiders (see picture below) a lot lately, is it dangerous? Any information on this spider would be appreciated.
We are location is Cabinda, Angola, West Africa. The spider is about 4cm in diameter.
Michelle #32
Your spider looks like a ST ANDREWS CROSS SPIDER. not very aggressive and are a low risk to humans. I wouldn’t worry too much about this one.
Hi, I live in Cleveland, Ohio, and found this spider crawling on my living room coffee table. It’s about half an inch long, looks black or very dark to my eye, has dark and tannish striped legs, and a pale yellow spot, not quite heart shaped, almost like a half of an hour glass. I immediately found an empty jar and maneuvered the spider inside and put the lid on.
All the pictures above are shot through the glass but still came out a bit blurry, even though I was trying macro mode. It was easier to get the spider’s underside as he was crawling.
Is this spider in the widow family? I never see spiders like this around the house if it’s some kind of house spider.
Thanks much.
Dan
Re: #172, I just got an email from an associate professor in biology at OSU, who stated “This is a subadult (one molt from being adult) Phidippus audax, the “bold jumper.” A completely harmless spider that is common in Ohio. In the spring, after the weather warms they grow to adult size (about 1/2 again this size) and mate. Some adults can be found through the warm months, particularly in sunny places or if indoors near sunny windows. They have beautiful irridescent green/blue fang bases, so if you see the front of the spider in good light this can be dramatic. On the young ones (such as yours) it isn’t always very visible.
This spider has a reputation for occasional nips if handled roughly with bare hands (not recommended), but the bite is of no real medical significance and they are considered “harmless to humans and pets.”"
I don’t want to include the contact’s name without his permission.
Since it’s winter here, I let him go from the quarantine jar in my basement, so he can get on with his job catching nasty bugs. It it was summer, he would have went outside. I did catch the green fang base when I tried to lighten one of the pics up in Photoshop, but by then, the whole pic was getting too light.
Hi, I have no photo but the type of spider doesn’t seem very common, so it may be easy to place, I recently saw a spider that appeared to be a slightly transparent blue, And rather than legs spouting around its body they went quite far down, for example a normal spider may be }8{ while this spider was more like 0 Does anyone know what this is? Thanks ( )
I wish I had a photo of the spider that bit me, but it was in the early morning hours (3:25 EST to be exact). I thought it was a mosquito, but then realized it couldn’t penetrate a sheet, blanket and comforter. I’ve moved so I must have had a spider in a box and it made it’s way into my bed.
Anyway, I scratched immediately. After a couple of days the bite was a little oozy and red/pink. I went to the doctor and he gave me Bactroban for the bite. It seemed to work, but now the bite is reappearing. Anyone have any idea what kind of spider with such poison could affect me in this way? Honestly, one day I couldn’t even sit down it was so painful until I got on the medication.
Any advice/help would be appreciated!
Thanks!

The spiders you have shown are one in the same and look very much like the same spider my 6 year old son was bitten by earlier on this evening, We actually caught the spider to inspect it more closely and found it to be a spider most commonly known as the “Spiny Spider” ( or Christmas spider or Jewel Spider ) Other wise known as “Austracantha Minax.”
My son immediately experienced a strong stinging pain in the area of the bite which looked similar to that of a mosquito bite or ant bite. The stinging was enough to bring him to tears and almost scream when I gently touched the area. I held a tissue with methylated spirits on the bite and within minutes the stinging sensation slowly began to subside. I am still going to keep an eye on the bite over the next few days. Apparently bites from this spider are rare. I guess this was one of those rare occasions?!
Hello,
Lately I’ve been feeling a numbness around my face, arms legs and wonder if it could be the result of a spider bite?
I live in upstate NY, northern catskill mountains, on a farm. Here is a picture of the big spider in our bathroom:
Thanks,
Ellen
Looking for an ID on a straw-colored spider, with a tiny body and extreeeeeeeeemly long legs with an elaborate web, sorry no pic

I just came back from our vacation in Cancun and saw this spider while we were playing cards. Can you please confirm its identity? I have included a picture below with a card to give you an estimate of the size of this spider.
I keep thinking it is a brown recluse. It was jumping pretty high about 2 feet in the air. Is it poisonous.
Hi,
Can you identify this spider?
It was about 8 cm long and we saw it near the beach at Punta Leona Costa Rica – Pacific coast
Below is a picture:

Barbara #167,
Thanks… only problem is I live in Upstate NY!!
They are rather small to… a thick body, but never really more than the size of a quarter.
The rest of the spiders in/around our house are daddy long legs and common tan/clear/black house spiders.
Hi,
I found this little guy sitting in the corner of my bathtub early this morning. It was bigger than the small cobweb spiders I usually find around the house and it had scary looking pincher’s.
I’d estimate its front to back leg span to be around 2-3 inches. I suspect it may be a brown recluse spider, although I live near Baltimore which is outside of their normal region.
Below is a photo I took with my cell phone. I have two small kittens in the home and I’d like to know if they’re at risk of a poisonous bite.
Any help ID’ing it would be much appreciated.
Thanks!!!
-Chris
I think
#161 is a spiny orb weaver
and
#181 is a golden orb weaver.

Hey! I live in a warehouse in Ojai, CA. I live with lots of spiders
(I’ve killed 4 black widows just this week), so I knew I was going to
be bitten sooner or later.
This spider above was the first guy to get to me just
about a half hour ago. I’d like to know his background.
Thanks.
well today after noon my little cusin got bitten by a small black, red n yellow spider and i’m trying to figure what kind of spider is that i try to take a picture of it but i coulden’t find my camera ……
Hi,
Today in the garage, behind washer machine (where is warm) I found one (bigger) and a few minutes later second (smaller) spiders.
They are brown, have round body, kind of similar to young black widow but I don’t know what are they.
Bigger one (its body) is about 9mm and smaller is about 5-6mm. Looks like female (bigger) and male (smaller).
I caught them both and made some close up pictures, which I have included below.
Thanks!
#181 Robert, it’s a female Golden Orb Weaver.

I have spiders that are shown in #87. Brown bodied and a redish orange hour glass on the abdomen. This is the time of the year we see alot. I would feel better if I knew what they were and if they are poisonous.
comment number 157, your spider is a Crablike Spiny Orb Weaver, which is scientifically identified as a Gasteracantha elipsoides. I found another picture identical to yours here : http://pelotes.jea.com/spiders.htm
to all of you who are wondering if the spider you found is poisonous: there are only two spiders (In north america at least) that are deadly; the black widow and the brown recluse (aka the violin spider) these two spiders are most likely found in the southern states. A black widow can be identified by the red mark on it’s back, and the violin spider has a violin look behind it’s eyes.

That spider is called a Sow bug Killer Spider. It’s an invasive species from the Mediterranean. Its bite is harmless to humans.
To Andy (#80) and myself (#188).
It’s Steatoda or sometimes called Steadota – false black widow.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steatoda
“Many spiders of the genus Steatoda are often mistaken for widow spiders, and are known as false black widows; however Steatoda are significantly less harmful to humans. Steatoda are shaped similarly to widow spiders, with round, bulbous abdomens. However, not all Steatoda species resemble widows – many have distinct coloring, and are significantly smaller than Latrodectus specimens. Some species of Steatoda actually will prey on widows, as well as other spiders which are considered hazardous to humans.
Some members of this genus do have bites which are medically significant in humans (such as S. grossa and S. nobilis), however bites by Steatoda species generally do not have any long-lasting effects. The symptoms associated with the bite of several steatoda species are known in the medical profession as steatodism; and have been described as a less-severe form of latrodectism (the symptoms associated with a widow spider bite).”
yesterday, my 2yr old and myself were startled while looking through storage tubs outside. A large black furry with white spots all over the spider jumped out. No picture, had to get rid of him. I have a phobia of most all spiders and didn’t want the thing jumping on either one of us. We live in Fort Worth, Tx. Can anyone identify? Thanks. Jodie
Found this spider just sitting on my carpet. Spread out, legs and all it is quite a bit larger than a quarter coin. Its front half has a shiny, brown look, legs are shiny brown too. It has two smaller legs on its front that it waves around. The back part is darker brown black and is not shiny. It has two tear shaped lighter spots with two round lighter spots under that.
I have not seen that spider before and I have a lot of them because I live in Detroit, Oregon in the mountains. We have gobs of snow all around, that may have driven it indoors. It is very impressive looking, ugly, actually and I am a spider lover.
Hello:
I discovered a spider nesting in our pantry under a paper shopping bag. I am very aware and familiar with Black Widows in our area. This spider had the exact shape and size of a Widow, but was a medium to darker brown with with white spots on the bulbus body. There was no hour glass on it’s belly. I don’t have a picture of it and no one was bitten. Do you possibly know what it was?
Thanks for any info, Paul
To #32 and #48:
I am not certain, but those look like Banana Spiders to me. I encountered my first one in Mobile, Al, and it scared the bejeezes out of me. They are, however, harmless…Kentucky might be a little far north for Banana spiders, but your pictures resemble the one I met. Additionaly, to all out there, (especially YOU, #16 and #27) you should have recieved definitive medical attention (thats EMS talk for a doctor) IMMEDIATELY! Those symptoms are not normal, especially if you think you have been bitten by an unknown spider!
Im trying to find the pictures of different spider bites, but am having difficulty getting any to come up, keeps coming back to the same pages. My husband has a spider bite, but it does not have the ring around it. It is hard and red and seems to be more localized than when first it was up and down the leg also. He has been taking antiobiotics and got 2 shots of antibiotics. He is tired, sleeping, and does not feel well. We are in contact with his doctor, who happens to be out of town at a relatives funeral and will not be back until Wed. If it is still bad on Monday, he will have to go to the emergency? I captured a spider today near our closets, stomped it and put it in a plastic baggy to show to the doctor. It is all curled up, had a tan body, kind of black legs. I am a scaried of spiders, but can stomp them if I have to.
I live in central California. I found a small spider about two centimeters long. It is black with red marks on it’s back, blue-green fangs and striped legs. Anybody know what type of spider I found?
hi #80 an #188
thos 2 spiders are different, #188 is in fact the false black widow but #80 i think it is a black widow, if you still have it be extremely carefull and take it to a local vet in a secure jar with very small holes in, if you go on google and type in black widow, look at images and you will find that the red diamond on its back is similar to the one on yours, so again be extremely carefull as it could be fatal if the spider bites!
