I live in Brooklyn, NY and there are a couple of these guys (or girls) in our backyard. I haven’t bothered this one (this is two pictures of the same spider) and I don’t think she’s dangerous but we’re not sure. If anything, just thought you’d like to see this one. She creeped me out at first but I think she’s really pretty now!
Thanks for your help!!

I have the same exact spider as John #516, Same situation, amazing web to the left of my porch light, the web in huge and very well made. the spider comes out only at night and hides under the eves of my house at night and in the rain. I have come to this websit to find out what kind of spider this is. I can’t find anything. I live in rhode island, i curious to see if John lives in north eastern usa as well.
What Kind of spider is this???
i was camping and found this spider under an entertainment center in nest composed of plastic bags and web (i think) but it was a triangle shaped abdomen and gray and red abdomen i found it in a remote area in klickitat county washington if you know what it is PLEASE reply
I have found several spiders all over my house, exactly like the one in Rachel’s picture(22).
I live near Houston, Texas. The markings on the body do not look like wolf, hobo, or recluse to me (but i am no expert). The head has a light brown line through the center, and the bottom has an oval that fades near the end- EXACTLY like the one in Rachels photo.
I have woken up to a spider on my pillow, in my hair. I have a 2 year old son- PLEASE help me to identify this. I haven’t been able to find other pictures similar to (22), but that is definitely the spider!!!
I have a spider, I can’t find anything about. I live in the Rockie Mountains, Colorado. Said spider is large, a quarter in size, orange, black, & white. It also appears to have some sort of fur,& stands like a Wolf Spider with what looks like giant fangs. I would like to have any info on this, poisons, allergies, what is it? Thank you!
I recently moved to Utah from Oregon and found a spider that looked just like a black widow only it had a red stripe down its back. It was in a car that i had purchased here. I noticed a thick web in the back window so I was on the look out. About a week later I found the spider dead, so i put it in a gum box but the wind blew the gum box so I have no photo. I am despreratly looking for it though. Net searches have confused me because it looks like a Red Back Widow. Is there a such thing in Utah?
#22 on this page is the spider we found in our basement in North central Indiana, it seemed a little blacker and about the size of a 50 cent piece, same body and markings. How many might we have since I found one and what is the characteristics of it? I didn’t think brown recluses were this far north as suggested in response no. 99??
I live in northern new jersey and i just saw a large rusty brown spider with tan and brown striped legs and a black marking on the underside of its abdomen with white dots of the edge of the marking
I have a brown spider with banded brown and tan legs living outside my back door. She spins beautiful traditional octagonal webs, and she’s huge! I live in Connecticut. Can you identify her?
Sorry, no. 22 on the first page looks like the spider I found.
HI. I dont have a photo because I was too scared to think of it. This spider was about three inches around and was about three inches tall. TALL! It had a gray teardrop shaped body, a read head, and orange legs. It was fuzy all over. I killed it immediately, now regretting it. The next day I woke up with an oval shape on my wrist. The spider may have gotten me the night before. The whole oval was red, but now its healing in a weird way. The middle part healed but now i have a target shaped bite. I think its a bite. It itches. Help me, and also, WHAT KIND OF SPIDER WAS THAT ITS SCARY!
Becky, the hourglass shape is commonly found on black widow spiders, which grow up to about an inch long. The coloring you described is odd. Sorry I wasn’t much of a hlep, just thought it soudned like a weird type of widow spider. Maybe there are widow spiders in diffferent colors. Anyways, you should definately be concerned, becuase specific, identifiable symbols on spiders is never a good thing. oh and can anyone help with MY spider problem?
I liv in Idaho, ive seen black widows a couple times. Im paranoid when it comes to spiders and i found one that is black and looks like a black widow but it has white spots and a white stripe on the back.. is that like a younger version of a female black widow?
Hi I live in Cape Town South Africa,
I found this spider in our house last night..
Is it dangerous and what is it called, I cannot find it on your website.
hope u can help
thanks
jane
I have looked all over online for pictures of a spider like this. I’ve never seen one like this & then just this week I’ve found 4 of them on the back side of my house. I live northeast of Denver in Colorado. Sure would appreciate any help you can give me about this spider & if it’s dangerous or not. I’ve attached a picture of it. It’s fuzzy with black legs & red body & head. Thank you.

I saw sometning just like #1 duane’s pic’s I live in moody alabama & I saw it from about 15 feet away & could see it clearly it was walking along my garage floor. I went closer to inspect it from a few feet away & i’t legs stood about just under 2 inches from the ground. Not gonna lie it freaked me out & my mother in law ran it over with the truck If someone can identify it let me know if I shoukld worry should I ever see another one.
we live in western north carolina. i found this spider in the bathroom. with legs it was about the size of a quater to a half dollar. it had a large fat belly. it was black and it had very distenct red thick stripes of red on its legs. our camera is messed up. sorry we dont have a picture. i was just wondering if anyone could have any ideas to what it is.
I have a couple of spiders at my house similar to the on in the picture in #95, and they are huge. Ours seem to be not quite as smooth, one horn on each side of the body, and one seems to have a smiley face on its back. What are they/are they dangerous? I also found a spider with a body between the size of a penny and a nickel in diameter. The body had quite a few ‘horns’ on it (lack of a better term), and the legs were thick with what I would consider long spines for a spider. I have a pic, but it’s on my phone and I can’t get it to the computer. Any ideas? We live in northeastern Wyoming in the country.
Thank you!
#22 … this looks more like a type of wolf (or similar) spider to me. I have them coming into my house all of the fall season. I live in the country in Upstate NY and get them in my bathtub, one or more almost every day. When the cold weather comes on, everything starts looking for someplace warm to crawl into. Spiders are no exception. While many people are petrified of spiders, I find it sad that people just randomly kill them thinking they have a recluse or a widow or something like that running around in thier house. Wolf spiders get fairly big (for a spider anyway) and they run like the wind!! Trying to kill one if it starts moving is darn near impossible.
I choose to try to catch them and take them to the bottom of the driveway to turn loose so they can do their “spidery” thing. Whatever it might be. Very few spiders are dangerous unless you have a allergy to them (as I do). Most just want to be left alone to be spiders. I prefer to have some of the spiders in my home during summer months to keep down the pesky flies, mosquitoes and other bugs. I would rather one or two spiders take up residence than a whole slew of flying annoying biting and/or stinging insects. When I brought my elephant ears in for the winter this year, along with them came an assortment of spiders, but the most fascinating one was white with tan markings and long legs. It did not build webs, but sat motionless on the tip of a leaf for many days catching the miller’s moths flying around the house (I got a bad batch of bird seed and Miller’s moths are the WORST!!!). I still do not know what this spider was, but I left him there and let him be his spidery self.
Spiders do not WANT to bite humans. They do not attack humans or run after them. They do not prey on small children or anything like that. They just live their lives (like we do) doing whatever they are supposed to do. That said, you should all know, I am not thrilled with spiders, do not want them on me and they give me the “willys”. But, even so, they are just spiders … they want to be left alone and so I do my best to oblige. Please everyone read up on recluse and other “dangerous” spiders. Many times the people having crazy severe reactions to the bites are those who don’t seek medical care until they have some sort of gross huge nasty infected bite. Don’t wait that long! If you know you were bitten by a potentially dangerous spider, why would you wait to seek medical care until your skin is black and you have an ulcer all the way to the bone??? But don’t just squash spiders out of fear. They are just being spiders. They don’t want to bite you any more than you want to be bitten.
#424 … Mr Soul …. that looks to be a Brown Widow. The egg casings of a Brown Widow are the only spider sacs I knwo of that have “horns”.
#561 … these sound like the little red/orange spider mites we have here in NYS. I am not sure of the exact name, but remember a friend (who had a background in insects/spiders)saying they were not really spiders, but mites of some sort (can’t remember now exactly what though). Related to spiders, we see them most commonly crawling by the hundredss on wooden picnic tables, concrete curbing and blockades, etc … They are tiny little things. Try looking them up under a mite instead of a spider.
Hope this helps!
hi,I saw this spider at my front door from the side window.
when it moved I saw some big part red.
thank you for your help.
Best Regards
Hey can anyone tell me what kind of spider this is. It had a crab like shell on its back when we first saw it. Now it seems to have shed the shell. We think it was where the babies were stored or something. We live in loveland, colorado. Thanks.
Could you please help me to identify this spider? I live in Bavaria, Germany. I have never seen a spider this large around here, so I think it could have come from my husband’s box of goods he sent back from Iraq! Thanks!
I live in southwest Michigan…Marshall to be exact, I found this spider dead in my basement this morning under a rung on my ladder. I have search on line and find nothing even close to it.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks
Tom Woods
We found this spider here in our office located in Los Angeles. We’re not sure what it is, and have never seen this type, it made it’s home onthe corner of our front door. It also had 2 egg sacs hatched with baby spiders. We import goods from our parent company in Japan and wonder if it’s poisonous. We’re afraid some of the babies that weren’t killed will roam around. Thanks
Hello!
I live in Ventura, CA…(Southern CA)

It was probably in-between the size of a nickle and a quater up-close?? it was taken with my camera-phone so it’s bigger in person… please help me find out if it’s poisonous or dangerous! I’ve NEVER seen one like this before! You’re help is much appreciated. If anyone knows.. please e-mail me at rene @wondergirl.net.
Thanks so much.

Found this spider on 10/2/08 on my Hibiscus tree on our deck. We live just west of Ann Arbor, MI. He was feasting on a fly. Then when the tree came in the house – spider disappeared – until I found it on the kitchen ceiling.
Took a pic and relocated spider to the great outdoors.

Well basically I ‘caught’ this spider a fair bit ago and snapped a picture of it. ANY help on what it is would be great. I’ve only even seen one like it so I am VERY curious as to what it is. I was thinking a brown widow at first, but well no where near looking like it and did not have the hour glass. So what do you firgure it is?
Found it in my basement, was very quick, about the size of a dime or a nickle.
Thank you for any help;
Korey.
I’ve seen a lot of spiders in South Carolina and can identify a large number of them but this one has me completely stumped. It is very unique with the translucent legs and green thorax. My kids and I would love to know what this is.
Tom
Here’s a picture of a spider my neighbor found. Can you help us identify it? It was found on the ceiling of front porch. We live in NW Ohio in a rural area. He’s about the size of a half-dollar with his legs stretched out.
Thanks for the help.
#630, Tom
What I believe you have found is a Green Lynx Spider. Here is some info about them.
Green Lynx Spider (Peucetia viridans)
Lynx spiders get their name from the way that they sometimes pounce on their prey in a catlike fashion. These spiders spend their time hunting for insects in bushes and low plants. They are fast runners, but can occasionally be seen lying in wait for prey beside flowers. They build no web for prey capture, but they do release a silk dragline as they hunt among leaves.
Look For: Bright green, cream, or tan body; legs are yellow with black spines.
Length: 5/8″.
Habitat: Fields, woods.
Range: Southern U.S.
Bite: While the Green Lynx spider aggressively attacks its insect prey, it very seldom bites humans.
Hello I have just sent you the photos, of a spider I have caught ….It looks like a black widow but of course as you can see it has a yellow back …Could you help identify this spider?
I’ve got hundreds of these guys living under the siding on my house. I’m killing them every chance I get with pesticide spray. The white liquid you’ll see on them is the pesticide. I live in West Virginia with woods beside my house. I very rarely see them out, but this weekend I washed my siding and they came out in droves. There were literally hundreds of them. The bigger ones I’ve seen have a body not including legs of about a half inch or so. Please help me identify what these are.
Thanks,
J.D.
I found this spider on the back my house. I live in loveland, colorado. Would you happen to know what it is?
This spider was hanging out in our house above the window. We live in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. I’ve never seen anything like it before. Thanks
This was found in Garner State Park in Texas.
I live in Florida and have 2 spiders I would like to find out about. I do not have pictures though. The first one was seen in South Florida about 10 years ago, it’s body was black and shaped exactly like a bat with it’s wings open, and it’s legs were in the center of the body.
The spider was only as big as a thumb nail. The other one I saw was just like the one in the picture posted by Karen #70 October 15,2007
Hi, this site has been very helpful. I caught two spiders (the other 20+ weren’t as lucky) in the past month. The first one I Know for sure is a female black widow and the second one looks alot like #391- Dan in Atlanta, Georgia; #420- Eddie S. in Irvine Cali, and #543- Steve B. in Denver. I have learned on this site that there are more species of widow than the black one. Is this spider ( the one I have has a reddish/ograngish hour glass under the belly ) part of the widow family? I have twin infants and I really don’t want there to be a problem with spiders. I have also found a really goofy looking spider a couple of months ago. It had what looked like 10 (ten) legs, a really long body and a broad head with big beady eyes. I took it to the local bug-be-gone company and they said it was a ‘funny’ or a ‘funnle’ ( couldn’t make out what they were saying on the tele ) spider. I live in Eastern WA and next to a vaccant lot, surely spiders will be around but should I worry with soooo many weird spiders inhabiting my home? HELP PLEASE ; )
Amarae D.
I live in central new york this guy was found on my driveway. he was about as fat as bumble bee! i’ve never seen a spider like this before.
I have no idea what this fellow’s species is, but my Daughters named him “Dweezil” when he moved into our doorway in Warminster, PA.
-Kirk W.
Had two of these show up outside our backdoor withing the last week. Haven’t
bothered the one, but the other built a web in an unacceptable location.
Would rather not harm them, but certainly would like to know if they are
harmful because of children and pets.
Best,
James
looked at all pictures looks like 20 and 77 what are they why don’t you post what they are
Today I found a spider on me. I had the body of a black widow. Very large round black body with long black legs. However on the back side of it it had white horizontal stripes. I am sorry I don’t have a picture. I found it on my sweatshirt while it was on me, so I freaked out got it off of me and smooshed it. My husband said it was a wood spider when I told him about it, but I looked up a picture of a wood spider and that is definatly not what I saw. If anyone has any ideas or maybe a site to help me identify it that would be great. I am not sure where it landed on me and I have 2 young children that I am worried about coming on contact with a possibly venomous spider. Also if it helps at all, I live in Central Washington State.
Hi, i live in ann arbor, MI. and i found this pretty large spider outside of the garage. its about two inches leg to leg and hard and bulky. its got two big humps on its back and tanish banded legs. its kind of dark brown and has a very large eye in the center of its face. i havent seen anything like this in michigan. i might be able to send a picture later today. what is it?
I’m looking at the spider thats unidentified in picture #62, sent to you by a woman named Sonda from Western Oregon. My name is Laura, I am from Northwest Ohio, we live in a rural area so having spiders inside and around the house is common, unfortunately an everyday thing. I have found more of the spider pictured above (#62) than any other kind. I’ve never seen these until we moved to where we are now, I have been to many sites online, been through several books, and haven’t found anything about this type. Then I came across your website, found a picture of what I’ve been looking for only to find that still I’m left with no information about it, other than they can be found in Oregon too. I would really appreciate a reply from you on this, or I will keep an eye out for your response to Sonda. Thank you so much.
Kevin N. #180,
That’s a wolf spider.
I have them all over my garage and they indeed jump very high when on the move.
It’s much too large to be a brown recluse, and no worries, Wolf Spiders are not venomous nor poisonous in any way… their bite is just very painful.
Nick M. #636
Brown Recluse.
Not the nicest spiders.
i found a spider in my garage the other day and i was wondering if anybody could please identify it for me. it is like a bright orange and brown striped with a very light orange line down it’s back. it’s legs are a translucent brown color and are dark brown at the segments. it has long skinny legs and it’s abdomen is kinda large and it seems to have point, almost like VERY small horns, on the top corners of it. it’s kind of a scary looking spider and I’m one of 6 children and i’m worried about weather this spider poses a threat to me and my family. i live in northern illinois by chicago. please, if you know what spider this is your help would be GREATLY appreciated. i will try to provide a photo of it in the VERY near future so that it may be easier to identify. i’ve looked online for hours and have found nothing. if anybody knows any good websites to look at for spider identification please let me know. thank you very much
well this is for becky #18 well spiders love me and i have been bit many times im not sure what that spider is because there is not picture but im about 80 percent sure you just described a brown widow but dont worry as long as you seek medical attention and kill it there shouldnt be a problem maybe bug bombing your house would be a good idea just keep an eye out for any more
With regards to Jacquelyn Parkhurst, post No 283:
What you have there is a wolf spider, female, common throughout Europe and the Americans, harmless but highly aggressive.
Nishchal:
You have a sand scorpion, harmless as well.
Jacques Kotze and Caisii M:
You both have a Variation of the common Orb Weaver, keep an eye out for the Golden Orb Weaver.
Saw this spider in Myrtle Beach, SC. Also found a black widow in the garage, but I can’t identify the one that looks like a die or a domino.
Brian, Vernon, CT
hi duane: ( #1) the picture of the spiders you have are very good pics. the reason i am writing to you is because the spiders are Huntsman Spiders. i know this because i am fascinated with spiders and i happen to have one. oh, and dont be worried, they are harmless
Please help if you can. This spider crossed my path (I was barefoot – never again) walking across middle of our wood floor in front room of our 106 year old house in Sheridan WY during the vice-presidential debate. It ran very quickly after I screamed, husband only saw a blur and did not believe it was a spider as it was so large. Husband pulled TV out and it was under it in the old furnace outtake vent. It reared up on its back legs and attacked the screwdriver my husband was holding and smacked its front legs down. He had a dark greyish blackish velvety appearance, striped legs and red fangs.
Thought maybe it was phoneutria nigriventer but in WY? It matches the behavior and appearance and has the red fangs. It measured 2 inches long. It is October and we had just watered outside and thought maybe we drove it into the house. Thanks for any help in identifying it. It is the biggest spider we have ever seen or caught in our new home (or any home for that matter and we have lived all over the U.S.) and needless to say it is was very large, very fast, and not at all afraid of my husband, which is terrifying.
This thing just came out from under my refrigerator. I live in SC and I am terrified of spiders. I would rather have had a snake come out! Do you know what it is please? Thank you, Joni
Hello,
I have found 3 relatively large spiders living in my back yard (i live in central Ohio) and I was wondering if you could identify them. Thanks,
Rachel
this was in a crepe myrtle tree in Dallas Texas in September 2008. Oddest spider I’ve seen. Do you know what it is?
I am hoping you might be able to help Identify a spider that I found on my porch yesterday. It was on the ground. I live in Southern Wisconsin
I thought it might be of the wolf species but I can’t find any picture similar to it.
I want to make sure it is not harmful for my two small kids. I have never seen one like this before.
Tressa
I live in Millington Michigan and I found this spider in the front of my house. I tried searching the internet for photos but was unsuccessful. Can you tell me what kind of spider this is? The first picture is the top of the spider and the rest are the bottom part of the spider. Sorry some of the pictures are not so clear but I was not taking it out of the jar, for clearer pictures, it was hard enough for me to get it in the jar.
Thanks,
Heather
what kind of spider was it in # 97 nsend by alan it looks alot like the one i just found curled up in my finished basement along with so manny other kinds it is just horriable I HATE THEM
I found this spider in our basement; any ideas what it is? It’s huge!
An employee was bit by this “little” guy. At first we thought that the orange area was part of the spider but upon closer inspection found that it was actually an egg sac. Im going to email a picture. Can you tell me what kind of spider it is?
I found the Spider in #7 also and really want to know what he is called!!!!!
Sara
I’ve seen a few of these spiders right outside my house–one especially seems to keep making her web right outside my back door. She’s a fairly large spider with brown and black striped legs, and she makes gorgeous traditional octagonal spiderwebs.
What is she? And is she dangerous in any way?
Oh, and sorry–I forgot to say–I live in Connecticut.
Thanks!
Please help me with identifying this spider. We just got back from modoc county and live in Sacramento. it has a violin figure but is red. Please help i have a little one and am concerned.
I live in Central Virginia, and I have alot of spiders just like the one in the picture that Sonda caught ( # 62 ). I was wondering what kind of spider it is.
Thanks,
Alissa
Hi, I have another spider identification question. My boyfriend saw a few spiders in an old shed he was cleaning out. I didn’t see them, but he said that they were neon orange and had the body type kinda like a widow ( hairless ). I tried to find them on the internet but had no luck. I live in Central Virginia. Can anybody help me figure out what kind of spiders these were?
Thanks,
Alissa

Can you ID this spider, found in Michigan
Okay, this was odd, what is it? Very curious, it was pretty big.
Here’s my beast… s/he was about 3 inches tip to tail. I’m guessing it’s an orb spider, but couldn’t find any references to ones being that big!
thanks,
Jane
Can you tell me what kind of spider this

Pemberton> BC, Canada. Thanks, Carol

Do you think its and brown recuse ? For safey resons I gave it the death sentance and put in on some fantastic all perpos cleaner
Sincerely,
Ryan
Hi Chris. Your spider looks like some sort of Shamrock Orb Weaver
Alissa
Alright, since July my wife and I have been getting bites every couple of weeks, usually on the back of our legs or right on the caboose. We thought it may be a brown recluse at first, since the pictures of the bites from it match with what ours looked like (small bite at first, swelling later, then the area gets inflated and hard after that, oozing/pus out of the wound, etc.). And when I came home one night, my wife said she killed one. When I went to see, she smashed it a little too much to tell if it was a recluse or not. But the bites kept coming.
Just now, a few minutes ago, I found this in our closet:
I’ve never seen a spider like this before. The only others we’ve found at home are tiny black or white ones. This one was much bigger (though still small) compared to them. I smashed 2 or 3 of its legs off before I took the pictures (sorry). I plan on fumigating everything this weekend.
Can anyone identify this thing? I live in Hillsboro, Oregon if that narrows anything down.
Hi Chris. Your spider looks like a Shamrock Orb Weaver.
Alissa
Ok so i found this gal outside by my grill. she didnt seem to be bothered by me or my 2 dogs but all the same ive never seen this spider in illinois and I’ve lived here for 21 years. What really threw me was how large she is when shes not balled up, nearly bigger than a bottle cap or quarter. she has banded legs white and i think brown (didnt feel like putting my face any closer to her lol) her abdomen is rather unique, the only way i can desribe it is it looks simmilar to a mushroom, the white dots on the back have pin hole size small black dots in the center almost like small craters. I killed the egg sac that it was running from so i can only assume it is a female. Its rather aggressive when i put a small stick next to it it reared up and attacked it. SO i put the bugger in a container. Anyway any help identifiying this large beast would be helpfull i tried to supply pics that would be helpful
This last picture is what we are dealing with,we have 8 kids and 2 have already been bitten.we just moved here and have only been here a month,my husband, myself and 2 of our daughters have been bitten by brown recluse spiders and we have large circle scars where the flesh was dissolved. I don’t think this is a brown recluse but I would love to know what it is and how to get rid of them short of moving, but the fear of course is taking them with us in eggs.PLEASE help us find out.BTW,brown recluse are smaller and a lighter brown. We live in fear because we kill at least 4 of them every 3 days and when we smash them and they ball up they are as big as a quarter, bigger when they arn’t dead.Massive, freakishly aggressive, and they have even cornerd two of our small girls on the steps.Goosebumps are VERY common in our house.
I apologize,I was talking about the last one on the first page.
For #363, that is a commonly known as a camel spider but is actully not a spider. It’s also closely related to the scorpion and may be known as a wind scorpion. They are not venomous although their bites may hurt.
I live in Flagstaff, AZ in a heavily wooded area (pines?) and woke up to find a nice little spider in my bathrooms sink this morning. I put in a glass but I don’t have a camera to take a picture. It resembles a brown recluse but doesn’t have the violin-shaped marking. It’s missing a leg so I think that’s why it’s not moving a whole lot. It has a thin body about a half an inch long and with the legs it’s just a little over an inch. There’s hair on the legs and they are banded brown and dark brown. The body is very dark, chocolatey brown with a cream colored stripe running the length of it. I can’t see any eyes, and there are two fang-like appendages on the front that may be genitalia. I don’t want to kill it, but if it’s poisonous I’ll take it away from my house to put it back outside. Any help is great! Thanks
im petrified of spider, last night in my basement apt. in stamford CT. there was a small to med. sized spider with redish orange this hairs on its legs, i looked on line and its not a tarantulla. It just looks like a normal black spider with bright thick colored hairs on its legs! please let me know that this could possiby be.
What kind of spider is this? I don’t get too many of them, if any, inside my house, but lots of them on the outside. They were hiding under my siding but I fixed that and now they make little cocoon type webs in the corners and cracks of the house. They mainly come out at night for bugs which is great but they leave little black spots all over my house. Not good especially on new paint…..they need to leave. Can you help?
Can you tell me what this is? I live in Boise, Idaho and have found several in my garage. They are large, over an inch from end to end.
Thanks
Joan T
My kids found this spider, already dead, on our driveway.
We live in the SE part of Michigan (Monroe).
What is the name of this spider?
Thanks!
Mary
I saw this in the woods, could you tell me what it is?
I got bit by the same spider that #62 has a pic of if anyone knows what type it is i would appreciate if you could let me know so I will know if it is posionous. Thanks Jessie
We encountered about 30 of these spiders in one ditch picking up trash for Adopt-a-Highway. We are just wondering what they are. I’m sure they are harmless but we are quite curious. We’d never seen a spider like this and then to see 30 or more! We live in Northwest Iowa and we’ve never seen spiders this big! The photos are from my cell phone so the quality is bad, and we didn’t have anything to put next to them to show their size, some were as big as quarters.
Thanks! Jennifer B.
Hi. This is a picture of a spider we found in our kitchen behind the trash bin. We live in downtown Indianapolis, IN. We were looking it up but couldn’t find an exact match, at first we thought that it was a brown recluse. Can you please help us identify this spider? It’s legs have faint stripes of black. the head has two large fangs and it is black and white striped. The butt has dark red and black stripes, and it looks like it has two smaller little fangs. It also has an hour glass shape on its belly, or its just a thick line. I tried to show it in the picture. It is about an inch long but was bigger when it was first caught. Hopefully you can help! Thanks a bunch.
Hi! I found a large (bigger than a quarter, smaller than a silver dollar) bright orange spider in my basement crawling across the floor. I live in Minnesota. What is it? Does it bite? No picture, sorry, I squashed it.
I have been spraying for spiders in my (finished) basement and around windows, doors, etc., but I still seem to be getting them in. Any suggestions for keeping the critters out?
I got a bad spider bite earlier this year that caused a skin infection, and now I am even more paranoid about them!
Found this spider in the garage yesterday (Oct 20), located in NE Ohio. It’s got beautiful color – but the wife is freaking out. Can anyone identify it?
Hi, I was hoping you could help me identify this beautiful spider I saw near Parry Sound Ontario on Oct. 4th of this year. I took about 20 pictures of her but none really came out well: she just wouldn’t sit still and my camera’s not so great.
The body was approx 1cm(3/8th inch) long(looked like one body not two??) and the legs were about 180cm!!!(3inches) long. As it walked(ever-so gracefully) the body was about one/two inches off the ground. It was walking ‘casually’ and I got the impression that if it was in a hurry it could probably move about as fast as a human’s normal walking pace. It was quite cool that morning, around 4C(40F) I think, but that didn’t seem to bother this creature at all. Thanks in advance and thanks for your great website.
P.S. The legs had a really thin final segment of about 2.5cm(1inch) that doesn’t really show in the pics.
hello my sister in law works in a nursing home in england we dont see many spiders apart from tiny one’s found in homes but the particular spider that she found was one that she had never seen before. it was jet black, with a white cross on the butt end, and white stiped legs it was found in the washing machine after washing had been done.
could anyone tell me what kind of spider this might be! i would appreciate it thanks
I had an encounter with a very small brown spider it had two conjoined horizontal triangles on the top of its head. In michigan. It may have been a small wolf spider , but Im not shure.
I don’t have a photo so I’ll try my best to describe the spider I’m trying to find. I live in Houston, TX and first saw this spider around early winter (Oct., Nov.). The body was about 3″ long. The legs were also about 3″ long, making the spider a good 6″ from front legs to back. It was black and yellow. I’m not sure if you would say black with yellow marks or vice versa as neither color seemed to be the dominant one. The body is a shell versus a soft body such as a wolf spider. I know this shell is at least flame resistant as my roomies tried to “kill it with fire” (see: made a blowtorch with a can of wd-40 and a lighter). The fire did absolutely nothing except make it angry. The best description of an “attack” that I can give is that it moves very, very fast and seems it would attack with fangs. I only say this because one night, we were locking our front door and it dropped down from the roof and tried to attack our hands at the door. I know this spider builds webs as that is how it was able to “fall”. I was not able to determine if any of the webs around the property belong to this specific spider. I was not comfortable getting close enough to see any small details about it such as eyes, fangs, etc. Any help in at least starting to identify this spider would be greatly appreciated. I have checked numerous sites and don’t really know where to begin.
Thank you.
Please help!!!

#462 – Those are brown widow spiders. And the yellow things are a bunch of babies yet to be hatched. Get rid of them.
Hi,
I would like to know what type of spider is in the first picture (with whitish grey bands on the abdomen) of post #538 by Samantha H. I too live in SoCal and one of these littl suckers decided that I was Little Miss Muffett and tried to hang out on my shoulder while I was watching TV. I am terrified of spiders that I cant identify…I cant even take a nap on my couch anymore casue Im scared. I desperately need to know what this is.
TIA
I found you online and didn’t know if you still help identify spiders. I found this spider on the screen to my porch. My son actually found it which is my biggest concern. I live in South Carolina. Please let me know if you have any idea.
Thank you,
Dana
My cat got my attention by meowing at this spider on my wall. I’ve never seen a spider that looks like this. The size and color scared me so I goggled it and couldn’t really find anything on it. Hope someone can help.
