Loved your site! Here is a photo of a nocturnal spider, who sets up his web at about chest high every night, and disappears into the tree every morning.

Hopefully someone can Identify it. I don’t think it is native to Florida because I have worked landscape for years and never saw one.

Thanks for your help, and I hope you like the photo.

I recently found (and caught) a spider I have never seen before. I was walking out my back door and it spun a massive web. I saw it through the glass of the storm door. It spun a web completely across the storm door and attached it to the side of the porch. It was a huge web. I live in south western Pennsylvania. The spider is about the size of a quarter (including the legs when close to the body). It is black and white. The legs alternate between black and white as if it were a dashed line. The body is all white and the head is black. I have it in a container with a lid. I tried to find pictures on the internet of it, but I have found none that look like it. I live in the country and am concerned about the type.

Hey. Did anyone ID Ricky’s #67 from last year? We found a similar spider this morning outside our car window. We released it to a tree, but now I’m wondering if we should have kept it, because it didn’t look like anything seen here before, and wondering if it is non-native. We live in Ohio. Thanks.

  4. Julia says:

    OKay so

    #89 I belive that’s a normal wolf spider (harmless)
#73, 59, and 48 those are all harmless Orb spiders.

  5. Marcus H. says:

Hi.. I live in middle Georgia and curious about a spider, i’ve never seen before.. It’s light brown with light brown and dark brown striped legs.. Distinctive black marking on belly with four white dots.. I’ve looked on the web to try and see what it is but couldn’t find a pic of the belly.. I’ve only seen it at night and only every other night.. I looked for it during the day, but only find the web cut loose. I live away from the city, so it obviously prefers to only be seen at night.. Donna in #7 and Amy in #469 are an identical match and also John in #444 gives same description.. I dont wanna harm it if isn’t poisonous, but it has started to weave its web in the walkway.. Deadly? Please help me save this spiders life..

I went up to my boyfriend’s family’s cabin in Northern Michigan (Gladwin/Westbranch area) and we saw this spider in the garage. At first my boyfriend tried to convince me it was a black widow, and after a closer look we decided that it wasn’t at all — but it does look very similar. I’ve tried looking it up online, but having trouble finding an exact match.

My son had a hitchhiker this morning from his towel in his bedroom to the bathroom. when he finish showering, and started drying off, he got bit. We live about 40 miles west of Chicago near cornfields in a small newly developed subdivsion.
The spider was put in a bag for a photo-op. He is about 10mm without legs and 20mm with legs. Light reddish-brown legs, tan abdomen, dark reddish-brown head area. Is there a reason to be concerned about the bite? It is a large red circle right now, about 1 hour after it happened. Thanks.

I live in South Carolina (Spartanburg) with woods and water on our property. We recently had a nice, big European Orb weaver dangling from the paneling on the ceiling of our screened-in porch. He was there last night, but tonight he is gone. Instead, there is another little guy in his place. I have looked everywhere, but just cannot find it on the web. Can you help? I have attached a photo for reference. Thanks for the great website!

  13. amber says:

Hey Sarah!I was on a website because my friend had a very very fadel spider so i wanted to see what kind of spider it was.Anyways the spider you have i assure you that it is a red&black jumping spider. That is exactly what it looks like.But…..it doesnt jump very often because it said “the black & red jumpind spider only jumps if their is its prey or if it is hunting for food “.So it could possibly be poisinous….it doesnt tell you or i dident look hard enough. If the website gets an update, ill give you a warning.Thats all for now.

    Love& peace,

  15. Wade says:

i want to know if you have any idea what kind of spider this is. it was in our wheat field and there is many of them, it’s body alone without legs and head is for sure a quarter size if not bigger and all together probably 3-4 inches long. they’re very temperamental when we tried to move them off our combine and they scare me.

next, i’ve seen the spider that popped out of this web in the photo below and it was not anything like the one above, it was a darker brown color, very different body shape and about 3 inches long. i decided to bring my camera when i noticed on a 100 acre field there’s probably 200 of them. what kind of spider builds this web in a wheat field? they also move unremarkably fast.

  16. T.McNeeley says:

I live in Cleveland,Ohio.Ive been seeing spiders about a half inch long,brownish-black,with yellow stripes. Are they a danger to people?

  17. Heidi says:

Today I was heading up from my basement and found two spiders in the same spot. I quit killing them a few months ago because all they’re trying to do is live…

SO two things I have to ask:

    First:
One was an australian wolf spider. I tossed her outside so she could live free. The next spider i still have and its sitting in front of me. I’m concerned that it may be a hobo spider. Its about as big as a quarter (legs and all) its a tawny brown color with a lighter brown-tan abdomen thats pretty hairy. Each leg has a band or two of a darker brown color. Kind of striped if you will. Its petapalps are big and unusually long with bulbed ends.

Is it a hobo spider or something else???

    Second:
I keep finding these really freaky looking spiders in my basement. They are red and glossy and get pretty big. Their abdomen however is thin and a tawny tan-gray. They’re pretty aggressive. Any time i lay on my floor or happen to be on the floor for whatever reason, these spiders run at me. They never get the chance to actually reach me. They’re creepy and pretty horrible. I need to know what they are and if they’re poisonous or not.

  18. Dale says:

No pic available. and i can not get a good eye count. I live southern wisconsin along lake michagan. the specimen was found in my backyard, hanging from a web of no definable shape.
the spider body @5/8″, and overall 1-1/2″. the legs appear almost hairless (very light fuzz) and have a segmented color of black/brown tips, light tan, black/brown, etc. inward. the body (back side) color is made up of white, tan and brown. white being dominant. a symbol resembling a medical emblem extends from behind the head, rearward, to the middle area made up of brown and white. then a band of tan wraps the back like a belt. the remaining back is a continuation of the white stripe from the upper symbol with four brown spots, two on each side. the bottom of the head area is a tan color with a brown center spot. the abdomen is a light tan color with a symbol like that of a tulip with the outer side petal being black. it appears aggressive if disturbed, and otherwise seems to faint death. the web it uses is microscopic.

  19. Tegan says:

Please if anyone can help…I have spiders that have been appearing in my trees in my backyard, I reside in Jacksonville Florida. The spider is about 3-4 in when the legs are extended, the legs are yellow and black striped the body looks like a hard shell and is pale brown to white, it appears to be aggressive when coming near its web..the legs end in a point instead of blunted or rounded. Could someone tell me it this is posionous???

  20. Alex says:

maybe you can help me or point me in the right direction to identify what looks to be an arachnid. I do not have any experience in this field besides the fact that I and my family hike a lot and see much wild life here in Oregon but nothing like what is in the attached photograph.

We found this strange bug inside a hole in rock on a trail by Triangle Lake in Oregon, I wish we would have put something in the photo for scale reference. All I can say is that it is big! The hole circumference was slightly bigger then my closed fist and the depth is just a guess about 6- 8.

We live in North Texas and this spider is getting on my nerves but it stays out of our way its frightened easily and runs back in the hat.. is this spider dangerous or is it benign just wanting to eat..we killed a black wido spider 2 weeks ago that was laying a nest egg in our trash can outside.. i have photos of that bug too although she was pretty she was killed pretty fast because of my kids..

    Hi,
I live in northern NH (Mt Washington Valley). This spider has made a home for itself outside, under an eave above our back door. A large (about 1foot round) spider web. It hangs out all day out on the web, and creeps back to the corner at night it seems. It is end of summer right now.

I have two young children, and would like help Identifying to make sure it is not harmful to humans.

The spider is about 1-2 inches (body) and maybe 3-5 inches if legs were splayed out?

    Thanks so much! Great website!

    Hello,

I found a large spider with bright orange legs and a bright yellow body with 2 blck spots hanging onto my truck yesterday, can you help me to identify it? I unfortunatley do not have pictures because to be quite honest with you it scared th crap out of me! I’ve looked online and the only thing close to it had black stripped legs – the one I saw had solid, bright orange, long, jointed legs. Thank you

  29. Victoria says:

About a month ago I saw a small spider (about 1/3 the size of my pinky) in the window(on the other side of the glass)it was light brown with 6 light blue spots on it’s back & it was fuzzy. Last night I saw it again, but this time it was jet-black(like a black widow) & it was smoothe(I’m sorry I don’t have a photo for you). What kind of spider is it? If it gets out could it kill hurt me or my little brother? If it can, what kind of toxin does it have? How can it be treated? What are the signs of a bite?

  30. Anne P A. says:

Will send you a picture to address you gave. Spider is mostly red, legs are varigated light and black, large body. Folds up in long vertical line when resting, looks like a pine needle on the wall. Web is large orbed. Hides in the crevices of the wooden stairway to our apt. Builds webs at night across the walkway. Entire circumference of spider about 2 1/2 inches including legs, but it more elongated than round. Thanks, Anne

can anyone help me ID this type of spider? Its web has been growing greatly in my backyard where I park my car. I’m not sure if those balls are food or eggs, since I don’t know much about spiders. I know that the big one must be a mom because it was the only one there at first and then there was more and she won’t leave the web, she just stays in the corner. I also live in the California area if that helps.

I live in Iowa and found a large spider trying to drag a leaf into it’s web. It looks like the picture posted by Donna on September 10th. 37. Wilfredo says:

These spider has been living inside the window rail for about a year and a half, I dint know it was there until I cleaned the spider web to install an alarm device. Two days later the spider web was build again, but this time bigger. I been tracking this thing for 2 weeks now, I tossed an insect to the web trying to get this thing out and I finally got a pic. of it. My question, Is this a Brown Recluse Spider?. I don’t like spiders but when they do clean the place I let them alone, obviously I don’t want a Brown Recluse Family in my home. Appreciate any help

  38. Joni says:

I live in Hamlin NY and have seen these spiders (22) as well and after seeing that someone thought it was a Brown Recluse I freaked a little and checked out another web site. Judging by the pictures I would say that it is a wolf spider instead, which is much more common and much more benign.

I think we can relax a bit- phew!

  39. Mary B says:

I live on vancouver island in BC Canada…my cat was chasing this thing around and I’ve never seen a spider in my house quite this big before. I thought at first it was a wolf spider but it doesn’t have any hair on it….ahhhhh! My husband flushed it so whatever it is it’s gone but I just wanted to know what it was in the first place. Thank you:-)
