i found a spider in my garage the other day and i was wondering if anybody could please identify it for me. it is like a bright orange and brown striped with a very light orange line down it’s back. it’s legs are a translucent brown color and are dark brown at the segments. it has long skinny legs and it’s abdomen is kinda large and it seems to have point, almost like VERY small horns, on the top corners of it. it’s kind of a scary looking spider and I’m one of 6 children and i’m worried about weather this spider poses a threat to me and my family. i live in northern illinois by chicago. please, if you know what spider this is your help would be GREATLY appreciated. i will try to provide a photo of it in the VERY near future so that it may be easier to identify. i’ve looked online for hours and have found nothing. if anybody knows any good websites to look at for spider identification please let me know. thank you very much

  3. Elise says:

    Kevin N. #180,

    That’s a wolf spider.

I have them all over my garage and they indeed jump very high when on the move.

It’s much too large to be a brown recluse, and no worries, Wolf Spiders are not venomous nor poisonous in any way… their bite is just very painful.

  4. Laura says:

I’m looking at the spider thats unidentified in picture #62, sent to you by a woman named Sonda from Western Oregon. My name is Laura, I am from Northwest Ohio, we live in a rural area so having spiders inside and around the house is common, unfortunately an everyday thing. I have found more of the spider pictured above (#62) than any other kind. I’ve never seen these until we moved to where we are now, I have been to many sites online, been through several books, and haven’t found anything about this type. Then I came across your website, found a picture of what I’ve been looking for only to find that still I’m left with no information about it, other than they can be found in Oregon too. I would really appreciate a reply from you on this, or I will keep an eye out for your response to Sonda. Thank you so much.

Hi, i live in ann arbor, MI. and i found this pretty large spider outside of the garage. its about two inches leg to leg and hard and bulky. its got two big humps on its back and tanish banded legs. its kind of dark brown and has a very large eye in the center of its face. i havent seen anything like this in michigan. i might be able to send a picture later today. what is it?

  6. Michelle S. says:

Today I found a spider on me. I had the body of a black widow. Very large round black body with long black legs. However on the back side of it it had white horizontal stripes. I am sorry I don’t have a picture. I found it on my sweatshirt while it was on me, so I freaked out got it off of me and smooshed it. My husband said it was a wood spider when I told him about it, but I looked up a picture of a wood spider and that is definatly not what I saw. If anyone has any ideas or maybe a site to help me identify it that would be great. I am not sure where it landed on me and I have 2 young children that I am worried about coming on contact with a possibly venomous spider. Also if it helps at all, I live in Central Washington State.

  7. James says:

Had two of these show up outside our backdoor withing the last week. Haven’t
bothered the one, but the other built a web in an unacceptable location.
Would rather not harm them, but certainly would like to know if they are
harmful because of children and pets.

    Best,
    James

Hi, this site has been very helpful. I caught two spiders (the other 20+ weren’t as lucky) in the past month. The first one I Know for sure is a female black widow and the second one looks alot like #391- Dan in Atlanta, Georgia; #420- Eddie S. in Irvine Cali, and #543- Steve B. in Denver. I have learned on this site that there are more species of widow than the black one. Is this spider ( the one I have has a reddish/ograngish hour glass under the belly ) part of the widow family? I have twin infants and I really don’t want there to be a problem with spiders. I have also found a really goofy looking spider a couple of months ago. It had what looked like 10 (ten) legs, a really long body and a broad head with big beady eyes. I took it to the local bug-be-gone company and they said it was a ‘funny’ or a ‘funnle’ ( couldn’t make out what they were saying on the tele ) spider. I live in Eastern WA and next to a vaccant lot, surely spiders will be around but should I worry with soooo many weird spiders inhabiting my home? HELP PLEASE ; )

  11. Becky says:

I live in Florida and have 2 spiders I would like to find out about. I do not have pictures though. The first one was seen in South Florida about 10 years ago, it’s body was black and shaped exactly like a bat with it’s wings open, and it’s legs were in the center of the body.

The spider was only as big as a thumb nail. The other one I saw was just like the one in the picture posted by Karen #70 October 15,2007

  14. J.D. says:

I’ve got hundreds of these guys living under the siding on my house. I’m killing them every chance I get with pesticide spray. The white liquid you’ll see on them is the pesticide. I live in West Virginia with woods beside my house. I very rarely see them out, but this weekend I washed my siding and they came out in droves. There were literally hundreds of them. The bigger ones I’ve seen have a body not including legs of about a half inch or so. Please help me identify what these are.

    Thanks,
    J.D.

  16. Danielle says:

    #630, Tom

What I believe you have found is a Green Lynx Spider. Here is some info about them.
    Green Lynx Spider (Peucetia viridans)
Lynx spiders get their name from the way that they sometimes pounce on their prey in a catlike fashion. These spiders spend their time hunting for insects in bushes and low plants. They are fast runners, but can occasionally be seen lying in wait for prey beside flowers. They build no web for prey capture, but they do release a silk dragline as they hunt among leaves.
Look For: Bright green, cream, or tan body; legs are yellow with black spines.
    Length: 5/8″.
    Habitat: Fields, woods.
    Range: Southern U.S.
Bite: While the Green Lynx spider aggressively attacks its insect prey, it very seldom bites humans.

  17. Joe S. says:

Here’s a picture of a spider my neighbor found. Can you help us identify it? It was found on the ceiling of front porch. We live in NW Ohio in a rural area. He’s about the size of a half-dollar with his legs stretched out.

    Thanks for the help.

Well basically I ‘caught’ this spider a fair bit ago and snapped a picture of it. ANY help on what it is would be great. I’ve only even seen one like it so I am VERY curious as to what it is. I was thinking a brown widow at first, but well no where near looking like it and did not have the hour glass. So what do you firgure it is?

Found it in my basement, was very quick, about the size of a dime or a nickle.

    Thank you for any help;
    Korey.

Found this spider on 10/2/08 on my Hibiscus tree on our deck. We live just west of Ann Arbor, MI. He was feasting on a fly. Then when the tree came in the house – spider disappeared – until I found it on the kitchen ceiling.

Took a pic and relocated spider to the great outdoors.

We found this spider here in our office located in Los Angeles. We’re not sure what it is, and have never seen this type, it made it’s home onthe corner of our front door. It also had 2 egg sacs hatched with baby spiders. We import goods from our parent company in Japan and wonder if it’s poisonous. We’re afraid some of the babies that weren’t killed will roam around. Thanks

  27. A friend in NYS says:

#561 … these sound like the little red/orange spider mites we have here in NYS. I am not sure of the exact name, but remember a friend (who had a background in insects/spiders)saying they were not really spiders, but mites of some sort (can’t remember now exactly what though). Related to spiders, we see them most commonly crawling by the hundredss on wooden picnic tables, concrete curbing and blockades, etc … They are tiny little things. Try looking them up under a mite instead of a spider. :-) Hope this helps!

  28. A friend in NYS says:

#424 … Mr Soul …. that looks to be a Brown Widow. The egg casings of a Brown Widow are the only spider sacs I knwo of that have “horns”.

  29. A friend in NYS says:

#22 … this looks more like a type of wolf (or similar) spider to me. I have them coming into my house all of the fall season. I live in the country in Upstate NY and get them in my bathtub, one or more almost every day. When the cold weather comes on, everything starts looking for someplace warm to crawl into. Spiders are no exception. While many people are petrified of spiders, I find it sad that people just randomly kill them thinking they have a recluse or a widow or something like that running around in thier house. Wolf spiders get fairly big (for a spider anyway) and they run like the wind!! Trying to kill one if it starts moving is darn near impossible.

I choose to try to catch them and take them to the bottom of the driveway to turn loose so they can do their “spidery” thing. Whatever it might be. Very few spiders are dangerous unless you have a allergy to them (as I do). Most just want to be left alone to be spiders. I prefer to have some of the spiders in my home during summer months to keep down the pesky flies, mosquitoes and other bugs. I would rather one or two spiders take up residence than a whole slew of flying annoying biting and/or stinging insects. When I brought my elephant ears in for the winter this year, along with them came an assortment of spiders, but the most fascinating one was white with tan markings and long legs. It did not build webs, but sat motionless on the tip of a leaf for many days catching the miller’s moths flying around the house (I got a bad batch of bird seed and Miller’s moths are the WORST!!!). I still do not know what this spider was, but I left him there and let him be his spidery self.

Spiders do not WANT to bite humans. They do not attack humans or run after them. They do not prey on small children or anything like that. They just live their lives (like we do) doing whatever they are supposed to do. That said, you should all know, I am not thrilled with spiders, do not want them on me and they give me the “willys”. But, even so, they are just spiders … they want to be left alone and so I do my best to oblige. Please everyone read up on recluse and other “dangerous” spiders. Many times the people having crazy severe reactions to the bites are those who don’t seek medical care until they have some sort of gross huge nasty infected bite. Don’t wait that long! If you know you were bitten by a potentially dangerous spider, why would you wait to seek medical care until your skin is black and you have an ulcer all the way to the bone??? But don’t just squash spiders out of fear. They are just being spiders. They don’t want to bite you any more than you want to be bitten.

  30. Liza says:

I have a couple of spiders at my house similar to the on in the picture in #95, and they are huge. Ours seem to be not quite as smooth, one horn on each side of the body, and one seems to have a smiley face on its back. What are they/are they dangerous? I also found a spider with a body between the size of a penny and a nickel in diameter. The body had quite a few ‘horns’ on it (lack of a better term), and the legs were thick with what I would consider long spines for a spider. I have a pic, but it’s on my phone and I can’t get it to the computer. Any ideas? We live in northeastern Wyoming in the country.
    Thank you!

I liv in Idaho, ive seen black widows a couple times. Im paranoid when it comes to spiders and i found one that is black and looks like a black widow but it has white spots and a white stripe on the back.. is that like a younger version of a female black widow?

  36. angela says:

Becky, the hourglass shape is commonly found on black widow spiders, which grow up to about an inch long. The coloring you described is odd. Sorry I wasn’t much of a hlep, just thought it soudned like a weird type of widow spider. Maybe there are widow spiders in diffferent colors. Anyways, you should definately be concerned, becuase specific, identifiable symbols on spiders is never a good thing. oh and can anyone help with MY spider problem?

  37. angela says:

HI. I dont have a photo because I was too scared to think of it. This spider was about three inches around and was about three inches tall. TALL! It had a gray teardrop shaped body, a read head, and orange legs. It was fuzy all over. I killed it immediately, now regretting it. The next day I woke up with an oval shape on my wrist. The spider may have gotten me the night before. The whole oval was red, but now its healing in a weird way. The middle part healed but now i have a target shaped bite. I think its a bite. It itches. Help me, and also, WHAT KIND OF SPIDER WAS THAT ITS SCARY!

  40. Todd H. says:

#22 on this page is the spider we found in our basement in North central Indiana, it seemed a little blacker and about the size of a 50 cent piece, same body and markings. How many might we have since I found one and what is the characteristics of it? I didn’t think brown recluses were this far north as suggested in response no. 99??

  41. sheila s. says:

I recently moved to Utah from Oregon and found a spider that looked just like a black widow only it had a red stripe down its back. It was in a car that i had purchased here. I noticed a thick web in the back window so I was on the look out. About a week later I found the spider dead, so i put it in a gum box but the wind blew the gum box so I have no photo. I am despreratly looking for it though. Net searches have confused me because it looks like a Red Back Widow. Is there a such thing in Utah?

  42. katurah r. says:

I have a spider, I can’t find anything about. I live in the Rockie Mountains, Colorado. Said spider is large, a quarter in size, orange, black, & white. It also appears to have some sort of fur,& stands like a Wolf Spider with what looks like giant fangs. I would like to have any info on this, poisons, allergies, what is it? Thank you!

  43. Kelly says:

I have found several spiders all over my house, exactly like the one in Rachel’s picture(22).
I live near Houston, Texas. The markings on the body do not look like wolf, hobo, or recluse to me (but i am no expert). The head has a light brown line through the center, and the bottom has an oval that fades near the end- EXACTLY like the one in Rachels photo.
I have woken up to a spider on my pillow, in my hair. I have a 2 year old son- PLEASE help me to identify this. I haven’t been able to find other pictures similar to (22), but that is definitely the spider!!!
