I’ve got a little fella I need help with. I can’t figure out if this is an inoffensive grass spider, or a potentially problematic wolf spider. My wife is horribly allergic to bee stings etc.

Sorry, I forgot to tell you where he is: Riverside County, California, in the mountains, town of Pine Cove, elevation 6000 feet, in my bathtub. Thank you again!

  3. rox says:

Hi I live in Paarl south Africa. I just found a spider in the creases of my sons trampoline. It has a round plump white body and 8 black legs. When turned round it has a bright orange marking on its tummy. On closer inspection I have found them all over. HELP!

  4. Natalie says:

I’ve recently discovered a very peculiar spider crawling around on the ceiling in my house. The first time I saw it only a few feet away from the front door, and the other was noticed in the kitchen. Both times it was the same spider:

-The whole body was dark brown
-the abdomen was 3 times smaller than the head and had a small light yellow dot
-The head is square shaped with two small white eyes on either end
-Fangs are large and a beautiful shade of emerald green (really caught my eye)
-eight legs which are all dark brown and looked rather musular (the first two after the smaller ones resembled a crab’s back legs)
-There were no stripes, patterns, underside markings, or any other
-type of markings except for the one small yellow dot on its abdomen

That’s the entire description of the spider found – it was a little less than half an inch and when it curled up it looked sort of “fat” or hairy. I’m good at naming spider species, but this onee baffled me! I looked at pictures of the Brown Widow and Brown Recluse, but they simply didn’t match. (I’m in Irvine, CA) I do in fact beleive that this spider is very poisonous, which is why I’m taking the time to identify it for future usage. If ever I’m bitten by it, I’d like to know if it’s a threat or not!
Any pictures matching this description would be highly appreciated!

  5. Cheryl says:

    Hey

I live in Florida and I have just come across a spider that was black and had a red stripe on its back, it was about the size as a dime, I sprayed it with Raid as it was running towards my kid, that’s how I saw it! I’ve been looking at some of the photos on here and can’t see it, it kind of looks the same proportion as the Banana Spider but again black and red!
Please help, I’ll try and get a photo on if I can.

I was just worried as automatically I assume black and red isn’t good! Also I didn’t know if the defense mechanism was to spray eggs everywhere or something. Anything anyone can tell me would be great!

  6. Charles Hundley says:

While sitting at the computer, I suddenly found a small black spider on my arm.

Being a softy, I captured it in a medicine bottle and released it in my garage. It probably wont survive the midwest winter, but it probably also won’t ever develop high blood pressure (the inside of the bottle was well coated with bp med powder from my pills).

Make fun of me and then tell me what kind of spider it was. It was small (a little larger than the size of a pencil eraser when it’s legs were puuled tight to it’s body). It was black. It didn’t appear to have any markings. It was thick, not lanky.

Though I didn’t want to kill the spider but probably still did anyway, I care about family and pets infinitely more. I don’t want them to be in danger.

    Chuck

  7. Donnie says:

A lady had these as pets and couldn’t keep them anymore. She didn’t know what they were and had to get rid of them. We think we know what they are but would like to get some definite positive ID. Any help would be appreciated.

What kind of spider is in 749, I found one in my pool in hill country of Texas this morning. The underneath looks the same as 749 and the back is black. It does remind me of a small tarantula. It was on the bottom of the pool when I brought it out of the water with the net it immediately raised the front legs.

  18. Annemarie says:

I was bitten by a spider at a park in Melbourne on Saturday (two days ago), the only reason I know it was a spider and not an insect is because I saw the spider. It came from a couple of picnic rugs we had on the ground that we were sitting on, once they were folded I picked them up and took them to the car, as I was walking I could feel somethng hurting my arm, but I just thought it was a bit of grass or a stick from the bottom of the rug rubbing on my arm, once I put the rug down a small green coloured spider went crawling up my arm from the vicinity of the bite. The bites are really itchy, and look like general mosquito bites but have not got bigger or been anything to become overly concerned about, they have now started to get a little bigger, but that could also be because I have been scratching and scratching. Can someone tell me what sort of spider this was and if there is something I should be concerned about.

  19. jani says:

Just some advice on Brown recluse spiders, this is what those seriously dangerous spiders look like, as for the few pics that have been posted here with replies that they are brown recluses compare them with this.

Hope this will clear up some confusion.

  21. Ashley says:

I found a spider about the size of a quarter outside house, it’s dark black, like a Black Widow, but has a white diamond on it’s stomach. What is this?

  22. Sal says:

If anyone can please help us to ID the spider in #816, it would really help out my landlords and future tenants! We’re getting ready to move and already have to tell him that we’ve killed at least 2 black widows, tons of wolf spiders (one had a body of just under 2.5″, legs put it at almost 4″…), jumpers, various fly spiders…. I would like to tell them that they need to have exterminators come out, but the more info I give them the better and the higher liklihood they’ll actually do it! Thanks!

  23. Victor L. says:

I found this colorful spider in my backyard and took a few shots in the dark with flashlight. In search of this spider spices I tumbled into your web-site. I attached 2 photos of the spider, hopefully you can assist me to identify this spider and advise me if it is poisonous. Should I squash it?

FYI: The spider body measures approx. 2 cm in length (excl. legs), the abdomen measures approx. 1.0 cm in width, hairy and colorful, only come out in the dark to weave it’s web between the fence and the bush branches, and disappeared in the morning light.

    Thank you and regards,

I found a small spider in my truck a few days ago (while I was driving). Unfortunately, before I could park and get a camera, it had disappeared and I have not been able to find it again. I did want to remove it from my truck, but I only wanted to relocate, not kill it. The spider is very hairy and predominantly black in color with some white or gray markings. It also had green eyes. Can you help me to ID it? I have never seen one like it before.

  26. Michelle says:

  30. Rudy says:

About six of these have appeared in our pool. They crawl along the bottom and sides at depths anywhere from 1 inch to six feet. They are as big as one inch body length. When I fish them out and put them on the edge, the will crawl back in to the pool. I am in Louisiana. Pool water chemistry is good (saltwater pool, 7.2 pH) and temperature has been between 54 and 65 degrees F. The picture is of one about three inches below the surface. As you see, they don’t have air sacks. How do they survive and what are they?

    Thanks

i was in my room about four nights ago and saw a small spider on the wall. i went to kill it, but failed (somehow) and it disappeared. the next morning i woke up with a red bump on my nose, and its not a pimple. i tried to pop it somehow, but it didn’t work so i tried to prick it open with a safety pin but all that is coming out of it is blood. it is still there, and i know there is fluid inside because it is swollen and you can move the bump around. it has a small cavity barely noticeable at the top, almost like a volcano shape. i have no idea what this is, if anyone knows anything about the symptoms of a spider bite or if this is even a spider bite, please let me know

201 Beau Noriss: Latrodectus hesprus ( one of the Black widow species)

Latrodectus Geometricus . They usually come in cargoes of fruit. It should not survive the winter. CALL A EXTERMINATOR !!! Just to be safe.

Z 243 They were Brown Recluse bites some people have a tolerance to them. As to being homeless. I’ve been there too. Lived under a bridge in ’06. I am glad to hear you are doing better. Keep up the GOOD WORK. May God be with you always.

    Hi,

I have had this picture for while but I have not been able to pin down
    the species.

The colour on this one is really neat, I live in Manitoba Canada,

I am assuming it some type of crab spider as it appears to hunt like I
have seen them but I can only identify 4 eyes all facing forwards.
I have many more pictures in higher resolution, if you are interested.

Any information or idea’s you have would be great.

    Hi

I found a spider in my backyard near the washing line and a bush and it is brown all over with white stripes on its legs. Its back had a certain pattern of black and it was about 2 to 3 cm.

It was spinning a web and I’m fairly concerned about the safety of my family seeing I’m no expert in the field of identifying spiders. I really hope it isn’t poisonous and hopefully I can get reply a.s.a.p.

    P.S. I live in Australia

    Thanks

I live in central California, Modesto to be exact. I’ve lived here my whole life and I’ve never seen this spider, starting since last summer though I usually find one every other week or so, usually on a wall or ceiling. They measure about 1/2 an inch from front “toe” to back “toe”. Not sure what they are or if they bite, but since I seem to be harboring more than a few of them I’d like to know if they pose any health threat from bites or whatnot. The picture I took is from an old dead one I found in the back of one of my cupboards.
