Spiders
This section is for questions about spiders and insects that do not fit elsewhere. If you have a question about spiders or insects of any type, post it here for everyone to see. I am not an expert, but I do my very best to make sure your comments and pictures are posted as soon as possible.
One question about spiders that keeps popping up is how many spiders does humans eat without knowing it? The common response is that one to two spiders per day make their way into your mouth and trigger an involuntary response that causes a person to swallow the spiders.
That’s hogwash and in fact, spiders will avoid you when they can. Most of us sleep with our mouths closed unless we are snoring, and even sleeping, spiders crawling on your face will likely be brushed off before they would ever make their way into your mouth. Breathing alone would be enough to dissuade most spiders from crawling up your nose or into your mouth.
Chances are, you’ll eat more spiders than you’ll find crawling around your body. Did you know that the Food and Drug Administration has a set of guidelines that allow insects and parts to be included in certain food products? It applies to fruits and veggies, such as apples with worms, etc.

I have spiders at my house. im not sure what kind but i’m scared they will bite. No one I know has ever seen one like it. It’s about the size of a nickle and purple/red. I’m worried because one layed eggs in my room, and now i have a bunch of spiders crawling around. i don’t want to kill them if i don’t have to. Does anyone know what kind they are?
Well,
I am not an expert either, and I have nothing against spiders, but that will consider me to sleep with my mouth closed.
Anyway, I don’t think spiders should be crawling into my nose. That’s just wrong.
well, bye.
I just put a spider outside in the snow and now I’m feeling guilty if it wasn’t dangerous. It looked like a grass spider, but in addition to the white markings in the head section, it had a broader back section with an orange stripe down the back. I live in the foothills, at about 6600 feet. Thanks
I live in Philadelphia, PA and I’m unsure of the kind of spider I found in my bedroom. It’s white except the bottoms of the legs (the feet) are a dark color. It seems like a funnel web spider. It was crawling on a dresser I had been storing in my shed but has been in my room for a while. I put it in a tupperware container with small holes but i’m not sure what to feed it or anything. If anyone has any info please let me know.
I found a weird spider in my churches bathroom. It is just like a black widow except it has no hourglass on it’s belly and it is a brownish color with almost a checkerboard of dark brown and a sort of white color on it’s back. Anybody know what this is?
Bitten on face apparently while sleeping. Started as a small red area with a small blister in the center. The next day the blister was much larger, the area very red and swollen. Felt like I was fighting an infection. The third day the blister was even larger. Contacted doctor and he ordered oral antibiotic and an antibiotic cream. Fourth day, blister still very large but swelling and redness down. Fifth day doctor lanced blister. Thought it was possibly a black widow, said the area would probably be ulcerated for a while but that I had started medical treatment quickly and did not believe I would have any problems.
Any idea what might have bitten me. My symptoms seem more like a brown recluse than black widow. We had been cleaning out a large storage closet in our basement that is directly under our bedroom.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
