Scabies

Below are pictures of a Baby with Scabies and the pain the family has endured trying to determine the cause behind the bumps, but first, let me explain a little about this contagious skin disease.

Scabies is a skin condition that effects anyone, no matter what their class or ethnicity. A microscopic mite Sarcoptes Scabei burrows into the skin and does considerable damage and spreads rapidly. If you have never had scabies before, it could take up to 6 weeks for the symptoms to show!

Because prevention and / or control of spreading appears to be associated with bathing and personal hygiene, scabies is considered to be a water-related disease; however, the tick that causes scabies is not dependent on water for transmission or for any part of its life cycle.

Below are a few pictures of scabies that may help you learn more about this Mite. The picture on your left is an infection of the hand and the scabies picture to your right is of a forearm.

Amber, a visitor to our site was kind enough to share this picture of her 5 month old baby that was finally diagnosed with Scabies after two months!
baby boy diagnosed with Scabies

This is horrible but he is looking better after the two treatments, just not sure if it’s gone! Everyone that held him for a long period of time ended up with scabies. When he was almost two months old I noticed a bump, then two days later I noticed some more, so I took him to the pediatrician.

I knew something was wrong with my sweet boy! The doctor said it was staph so he was put on antibiotics which didn’t help and just made it worse so I brought him back four days later. The doctor then said it was scabies, sent us to a dermatologist who said it wasn’t scabies so she did a biopsy and said it was contact dermatitis (allergic reaction to something he was coming in contact with everyday).

I went to an allergist who had never seen anything like this rash (he thought it looked like measels) he wanted to do a skin allergy test! Well one night he was getting a bath and started screaming in pain ( this had been going on for months and I was beyond fed up) when I took him out of his tub I took those pictures above! Then I got the scare of a life time! A girl on, my facebook whose son has hlh (rare form of cancer) contacted me and said I needed blood work done cause I looked like her sons rash!

I called his doctor and when we went in she said “I’m sending you to a hematologist I have seen a couple of these cases before and they where worse than him and they are still alive just believe in god and start praying” I’ve never been so scared in my entire life nothing can compare to what I felt that day!

So we were sent to the hematologist who works at a teaching hospital as soon as he seen my little man he called an infectious disease Dr in they said it looked like scabies and showed me pictures out of their books so they called their ped dermatologist who scraped his skin and found two mites just from scraping three little bumps! She said he probably has millions!

This has been a very long journey our whole family got it! My husband and I still itch really bad I can’t even to begin to know how my precious little boy has felt through all this! I’m ready to get this nightmare gone for good, it’s just so confusing because the Dr says they don’t live more them 3 days off a host but everywhere I’ve read says they live longer than that.

I just don’t know what to believe! They want him treated everywhere on his head and face; I’ve done it twice but all the stuff I’ve read about the perm cream isn’t very good so I’m scared to keep exposing him to it! I looked into the sulfur a found some acne cream with 10% for me and my husband but rylan can only have 2.5% I can’t find anything with that amount.

I hope his pictures can help some other family! I don’t want anyone going through what he has been through ( he had his first set of stitches at two months old)!

Symptoms of Scabies

Some common symptoms and signs of scabies infection include irritations that look like a pimple, burrows or scabies rash and commonly found on the skin between the fingers including folds of skin on the wrist, elbow, or knee and other areas.

You may also notice an intense itching, especially at night and over most of the body with which can cause sores due to scratching.

Because there is usually less than 10 mites on an infected person, detection from a scraping or biopsy may be missed.

How do I get Scabies?

You can get Scabies by skin to skin contact with a person that is already infested. Without prolonged skin contact such as a handshake, your changes of getting scabies is very low. Intimate contact, sharing of towels and bed has a very good chance of infestation.

It is a common misconception that you can get scabies from your pet. Your pet may have mange and be infected with scabies, but this type of mite will only cause itching and stay in your skin for a few days, then die. It will not spread.

Scabies Treatment

There are many lotions available for treating scabies. Always follow the directions provided by your physician or the directions on the package insert. Instructions usually include:

Make sure your body is clean and apply the lotion from the neck down to the toes and leave it for about eight hours followed by a bath or shower.

Wear only clean clothes and make sure you wash everything you have used in hot water and dry in a hot dryer. You will usually do a second treatment with the same scabies lotion a week later. If you are pregnant or treating a child, there are milder scabies medications.

Scabies is often misspelled in the form of scabes or scavies. If you have this infection, we would love some pictures of the infected area to share with our readers. We will keep your information confidential and are looking for pictures of scabies that can be viewed by all visitors – simply send us an email to jim at badspiderbites.com

I just wanted to say I feel everyone’s pain i guess it doesn’t matter how clean you are you could still get scabies my six year old came home with scabies and i had no clue what it was until i took her to the doctors and they told me what it was now were all on a lock down I’ve just been cleaning my house from head to toe with clorox wipes , spraying lysol , using sanitizer for our hands, i got every one there own bar soaps, washing everyday. and using oxy booster and hot water to wash our clothes so I’m hoping that it will go away soon but everyone just remember if you have scabies just stay home so you wont contaminate anyone else. when i have to leave the house for something we all have long sleeve sweats on and we sanitize our hands before we touch anything and after we touch it so keep in mind the way we were mad and upset that we caught it imagine how the other person who doesn’t have it gonna feel so wash your hands frequently and don’t spread it

  2. David says:

The only cure for scabies is Doctor prescribed Permerthin Cream 5% rx. Re-treat 2 or 3 days later. Clothing: Raise the water heater temperature to over 130 degrees. Use only hot water. Once full of hot water, stop the cycle for 30 minutes also use borax. Mattresses: Buy an air tight mattress cover from Dermisil and keep it on for months. Furniture, carpets and cars: Use lots of 91% alcohol in a sprayer and borax. Some topical soaps, creams, oils say that it will treat scabies. They do not work. Multiple above treatments over time will eradicate. Bombs and pesticides do not work. I know this special little hell. Good luck!

  3. A troubled person says:

My dad got scabies at least 6 moths ago. He went to many doctors and they all said that it was some allergic reaction and they just prescribed a bunch of antihistamines and topical steroids. A month ago one doctor finally figured out that he had scabies and since then our whole family has been using permethrin cream. We gassed our house and my mom has been cleaning the house 24/7. My dad is practically exiled to a different room and sleeps on the living room floor(I know I kinda feel bad for him) His scabies seems to have gone away but my mom seems to have caught it. She sees small red itchy spots on her body and she has been treating herself with permethrin cream.

I have just begun to see my face develop a red rash-like spot that covers my cheek, but it doesn’t itch at all. I exfoliated my face and applied permethrin cream, but it doesn’t seem to be changing. I have very sensitive skin and I don’t know whether this is just some allergic reaction( I get those often). I also have eczema, so I’m really confused as to what I should do now. I’m too scared to stop the permethrin because if it is Scabies I don’t want it to spread, yet I don’t know whether the permethrin cream is harming my already sensitive enough skin. Please Help!!

I started itching one day and it never stopped, all over my body, eyes , head, face, ect. had to leave work because it was so bad, plus its not fair to others, and it would start fights! …. my insurance company DENIED my doctors papers for sevire peruitus(itching) my doctor thinks I want to go on disability!!! ya right ! I loved going to work, made 1600$ clean desk job.. cant be around anyone, go to party’s, anywhere… he says its just my imagination ! ya right I think he is on drugs…. doctors are so corrupt $$ very unprofessional.., doctors should take drug tests ! and any criminal can be a doc. the FDA history is crooked, people just don’t know or are apart of it. they are just money hungry since they are in 150,000 dept. when they get out of school.. they make billions on us !!!! they have infected people for hundreds of years ! so now I am broke, had to sell my house, and he wont sign ODSP papers… he says I have OCD ! lol because I am trying to figure this out.. after knowing him for 15years and being honest didn’t get me help… he sent me to his “friend” dermatologist .. she didnt even do a skin scrap !lol told me to leave.. asked me if I ever smoked pot that was the cause..lol right haven’t smoked in years.. I just started smoking pot to help me to relax and sleep. They make pot legal because it helps with lots of different things, cancer patents, pain, on and on and on… but the FDA doesnt make $$$ because it comes from a seed ( free)!! why do they percribe if its bad… now they are making a pill THC (pot pill) that has the exact same THC strain as bud. Sorry to anyone who has had scabies for a very long time. I didn’t realize that permethrin does not work on a small percent of persons infected. I am now on the path of fighting these horrors. I wash everything and then cook them in the dryer. I would be washing stuff forever so I am now cooking the bed sheets every night. Sorry to all. I didn’t know what a true nightmare these things are. I was crying last night. I am on my way to Sears to get hepa filters for my vacuum. I read that after you vacuum you have to through the bag out. Someone here said that put a dab of something on his/here skin each time they feel something stirring. I decided to do the same with the permetherin. We are probably all poisoning ourselves with ‘a cure’. Good luck to all of us. I hope someone writes that he/she is scabies free after treatment. I am not sure where I got these things.

  6. itchy girl says:

I am 20 years old and I have had scabies for about 3 weeks now. It is the worst thing that has ever happened to me. If the constant itching day and night isn’t enough I am treated like I have a plague. Virtually all my friends are avoiding me at all costs and I have little to no social life left. I think the psychological effects are worse than the itching. I constantly think about if I have cleaned everything and spend about an hour a day searching for new bumps… which of course is hopeless because I already have millions. It spread to my face and I don’t even want to go out in public. Like clockwork I wake up every night at 5 am to the most unbearable itching known to mankind. I didn’t sleep for 4 days straight and started to go in and out of consciousness. I just got oral medications for the itching and they ease my tension a little but do nothing to cure this. I did the permitherine cream about 4 days ago and was told to wait a week for a second application. I am slowing loosing my mind here. The itching is driving me to question my sanity and I just want these gone. I feel for anyone in the same situation. I heard that tea tree oil helps so I’ve started applying that to the infected areas and I will be adding it to my twice daily baths. Good luck

  7. terrics says:

I’ve had a fear of scabies for a long long time. (i saw someone with a bad case). My fear is now realized. I scratched for about 2 weeks thinking i was nervous. I also used cold packs and benadryl. I was only itchy at night; not at all during the day. I went to MD. She said it was scabies and prescribed permethin cream 5%. I put it on a few hrs. ago. I’ll let you know. I found another site where the folks had a lot of crazy ideas. Some had scabies for yrs. One guy was washing his clothes and bed sheets everyday but never got treated himself..oh well

p.s. i checked the CDC site and you can’t get scabies from animals.

  8. Jonathan says:

To all of those currently suffering,

I’m sure many of you before the scabies worry can think back to the itch reaction. When someone tells you “Somewhere on your body you are itching.” you probably start itching, it’s just like “you are now actively breathing.” ~ I think the psychological aspect can drive people mad wondering if they still have the mite after going through a phase of nuking the bugs with permethrin, tea tree oil, neem oil, carpet bomb, and anything else they can think of. If you treated for scabies give it time to see if you still have it after a full treatment. I drove myself nuts with repeated treatments for a month in a row then stopped for a bit and started to moisturize my skin like there was no tomorrow, and the itching over a week or two got drastically better.

Keep in mind the huge difference with scabies and post-scabies (in my case) is that scabies is persistent, and will keep you from sleeping ~~ post scabies can have itches and pimples here and there, and at times it seems worse (2 day episodes every week or so), but you can actually sleep at night.

The worst case scenario is after a couple weeks of not treating is that you’re in the same spot you started out, but at least you can be much more certain one way or the other.

Best of luck to all suffering this, it was the most miserable experience I’ve ever had.

  9. Jackie says:

I have battled this once before and both times it’s from getting a new puppy, the best thing you can do is skip going to the doctor the creams they give you only make it worse… Get dog shampoo and dog dip and shampoo and dip yourself every few days and it will go away…

  10. Brandon says:

Now I can’t see any of my friends.. I can’t be intimate with anyone, and I have to draw back from hanging out with anybody. I’m not sure if I got it from my friends shirt, or him his-self, but I wasn’t sexually active for the longest time, and the only person I knew who had previously had it was one of my best friends. My guy friend. And now it itches to the point where I can’t take it. No one will help me buy anything… and it’s just terrible… my fingers.. my hands.. my inner upper thighs, wrists, my bottom.. the back of my knees… It’s so hard to deal with it… Only after taking an extremely hot shower do I feel temporary relief from such a horrible and depressing thing. Please.. someone help me… :'(

    EVERYONE! YOUR ATTENTION !!!

DON’T EVER USE PERMETHRIN OR MALATHION OR OTHER PERSCRIPTION DRUGS!

THEY ALL CAUSE SOME FORM OF CANCER AND SHOULD BE AVIODED AT ALL COSTS!

USE YOUR HEAD! USE ONLY HOME REMEDIES YOU CAN GET AT THE HEALTH OR DRUG STORE AND ONLINE ONLY! USE ONLY NATURAL INGREDIENTS!

THE DRUG COMPANIES ARE GREEDY AND WANT YOU TO SPEND MONEY ON USELESS AND VERY HARMFUL SO CALLED MEDICINE TO CURE SCABIES! DON’T LISTEN- IT WONT WORK!

    THE DOCTORS
DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT HOME REMEDIES OR HOW TO CURE THE DREADED MITES!
DO YOUR RESEARCH…. FIND NATURAL REMEDIES.

    FOR EXAMPLE:
DIATOMACIOUS EARTH FOOD GRADE WILL HELP KILL AND DEHYDRATE THE PESTS!
USE NATURAL ACIDIC REMEDIES… LIKE LEMONS, ORANGES, VINEGAR, ECT.
USE TEA TREE OIL TO SOOTH IRRITATED SKIN… NEEM OIL IS ALSO USED IN THE MIXTURE. BALSAM OF PERU IS A GREAT ANTISEPTIC/DISINFECTANT TO USE.
EUCALYPTUS OIL IS GREAT FOR SOOTHING AND PESTS DONT LIKE IT!
BUT MOST OF ALL… IS THAT THIS POWDER OR SUBSTANCE HAD BEEN USED FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS TO FIGHT ALL KINDS OF PESTS, YET MOST COMPANIES DON’T WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT IT – SULFUR SUBLIMED POWDER!

VERY EFFECTIVE IN RIDDING YOURSELF OF THESE PESTS FOR GOOD!
BUT YOU HAVE TO GET THE RATIOS RIGHT. SULFUR IS VERY STRONG AND CAN BE HARMFUL IF OVER USED! 10% OF IT INA MIXTURE IS THE HIGHEST DOES RECOMMENDED. BUT USE ONLY HUMCO BRAND.
YOU ALSO HAVE TO DO EVERYTHING ELSE RIGHT… CLEAN YOUR BEDS, COUCHES, EVERYTHING THAT WILL OR MIGHT TOUCH YOU OR YOUR CLOTHING. HEY THESE THINGS LAST OR LIVE FOREVER.. I MEAN THE EGGS CAN SIT DORMANT FOR A LONG TIME. THEN COME ALIVE AGAIN!
BUT SULFUR CAN AND HAS CURED THIS IN 24 HOURS! BUT MORE LIKELY IT WILL BE MORE LIKE 3-5 DAYS FOR MOST PEOPLE! THAT’S STILL GREAT! YOU HAVE TO KEEP USING IT AT LEAST A WEEK AFTER TO MAKE SURE YOUR RID OF THESE DEMONS!

    PEACE OUT-

I have a heavy secondary infestation on my scalp face and chest. I think bleach baths for the mites and 12% cream hair peroxide on bumps and anywhere you feel crawling or pricking for the larvae. Watch what happens when you rub a little peroxide on a bump, it starts to corrode the larvae. I think I found a big 1cm nest on my face after rubbing peroxide on a raised area where I had felt crawling it, wasn’t even itchy. In fact I found many burrows on my face half of them under normal looking skin. I have about 30 bumps on my chest which are dried up now after rubbing with peroxide. There are burrows under normal skin which is a bit of a worry.

  13. Lizzie Alexander says:

I HATE scabies. We moved into an apartment in August when I started experiencing little “bug bites” all over my arms and legs, I didn’t think much of it but kept complaining to my boyfriend of how awfully I itched. I let it progress for 3 months until it was literally everywhere on my body, even on my forehead, leaving me covered in scabs and crying every night because I itched so bad.

We went to the hospital and they gave both of us permethrin cream. We did the treatment, and washed everything TWICE in hot water. About a week before leaving to visit my family in Europe I started noticing a bite, but it didn’t multiply so I didn’t think much of it. Once I was there, I realized I had been re-infected while I went through all the symptoms again.

My mom went to a pharmacy and bought me a tube of Eurax (a cream intended for the treatment of Scabies) I applied it everywhere but it was definitely not very effective however I hoped to at least keep my family safe from this nightmare. When I returned I made an appointment with my docter, she gave me more permethrin and I did two treatments and cleaning. Lo and behold it didn’t leave, I returned again, got re-diagnosed and was given another tube of permethrin. I did the treatment THREE TIMES (once each week) and cleaned everything.

Now I’ve started breaking out in hives every time I get a bite, without even itching anything my arms will start swelling up on their own and am seeing it also on my legs. I returned to the doctor’s office, where a different doctor told me I didn’t have scabies at all and had a skin infection. So she prescribed me a antibacterial lotion, antibacterial cleansing stuff and antibiotics. Nothing changed. So now I am still itchy, still breaking out in hives and extremely unamused. If there is a pill to cure this I don’t understand why I have not been given it and I am SO tired of having to go through the process every time of sanitizing my entire apartment.

I have spent more money and time then I would’ve liked to and with summer coming up I am covered in blotches and scarred bites everywhere. If anyone has a natural remedy that doesn’t include smelling like a rotten egg for two weeks please let me know!!

  14. Cathrine says:

I think I picked up scabies from a hotel room in Bali. I tried borax, bleach etc. I gave in and tried a chemical based treatment benzyl benzoate (ascabiol) all over my body, this burned like hell but allowed me to get on top of them. For the next week I kept the bottle beside my bed and at night I would spot treat.

I never really itched again after that but I could feel them crawling. I would agree with another post on here that not all people are allergic to the bites because I know they are on my body but I dont itch anymore. After the treatment they seemed to have gone. Then a week or two later I frequently felt crawling sensations in my hair ( they had moved to my scalp) then bites appeared on my face and chest. This time I whacked them with eucalyptus oil.

I would syringe the oil through my hair rub it into my scalp and put a shower cap on and also rub it over my entire body except face. It doesnt irritate my skin at all. I would then go about my business at home for about 4 hours. I also bought a tube of Lysol 5% permethrin cream to spot treat my face. I also keep the tube beside my bed to spot treat any crawling sensations I get at night. I am also trying the clear nail varnish on bumps as another poster on here is doing. This should suffocate them. Ive done the eucalyptus 3 days in a row it does work but I think new mites hatch and so I need to keep treating until the population of eggs and mites is minimal. It is summer here and I can sit around covered in eucalyptus.

The oil dries and so does not leave an oily film on your skin therefore does not stain. In fact eucalyptus is used as a stain remover. As it is summer I use a sheet on my bed and a cotton duvet cover (with no duvet) as a blanket as it is easier to wash everyday. Ive put plastic on the 2 chairs in the house that I usually sit on. I definitely think changing bed linen and treating your head are important to avoid re-infestation. I have read eucalyptus fries fleas and head lice.

I have used the oil to spot treat fleas on my cats and head lice on my daughter and it works instantly. I cant see why the scabie mite should be any different. So far I feel like Im slowly getting on top of them.

  15. C Whozat says:

I itched for almost TWO YEARS! One dr only said, hmmm. another one said to use cortisone. Like I couldn’t come to that conclusion by myself or was just mostly brain-dead.

It itched so bad! and it kept spreading! It could feel something crawling, but I couldn’t SEE anything. I tried anti-acne peroxide lotion, different antibiotic creams, two different anti-fungals, cortisone, powder w zinc. Nothing made any difference. It was maddening! Woke me at night!

I scoured the internet. AHA! the description of the symptoms of Scabies sounded just like what I was experiencing. Some people reported using the physician-advised insecticide products. I, personally, am not comfortable spreading poison all over my body, so I continued searching.

Here it is and it works:

Wash your body with Sulfur soap and take sulfur in the form of MSM.
I have been taking 500 mg capsules of MSM 2-3 times a day and washing with the soap twice a day. After you scrub your skin, rub a layer of the soap lather on your skin and let it dry. I also sprinkled my mattress with diatomaceous earth which kills bugs by poking them with tiny sharp edges.

The VERY FIRST DAY!!! the itching was GREATLY lessened. It has now been about a month and it is almost gone. Finally! two years!

We had a house fire on Christmas morning 230a, lost everything we owned. Our insurance pd for 6 months in a brand new apartment and they provided rental furniture. New pillows, bedding, linens and such. We were donated clothing from various places, I washed everything b4 bringing it into the new apartment. Some how a few weeks later I started itchy and noticed bites on my forearms and on my face. I was sure it was bed bugs. So I had exterminator come out, no bed bugs. So I assumed it was mites or something. No one else had any problems. Then my 6 yo started scratching and itchy welts went to doc and got the tube permethin (msp) and was told to use all over body wash all my stuff and dry in hot water and heat. Had my apt sprayed professionally and shampooed. After I first noticed the bites I threw out my brands new pillows and got all new ones. My doc didn’t tell me to apply a week later!!!! This site has me scared to death that I will never get rid of these bugs and I don’t want to move them into my new home when we get it rebuilt. Please help.

Scabies is the most horrible things in the world to get on your body, and one of the hardest things to rid from your body- this is tried n true and works like no other.

BLUE STAR OINTMENT will get rid of the scabies and is lots safer than the poison that you get from the DR that may or may not work.

just rub the blue star all over, I even rubbed that stuff on my top sheet.. took about 3 to 4 days, and then I waited a couple of days/week and repeated it.. boom clear!

I have been itching for two weeks and I didn’t start itching until I bought some new used seats for my car and I had enough and finally went to the doctor today and he said I have scabies and I believe my seats in my car are the culprit. My question is how do I get rid of these darn scabies in my seats? I just had my seats steam cleaned last week because they are cloth and I had this feeling I had fleas on my seats, but turns out it’s scabies. Help please I need to get these seats clean and get these scabies outta here

  19. Jim D, says:

My dogs acquired mange and I somehow transfered it to my coccyx (tail bone), I ignored it until it started to spread around my belt line and bum area. During this time, nodules appeared in the bum area. The infection took off after that, infecting arms, legs and everything but my chest, hands, face, feet and most of my back. I contacted a Dr and He prescribed ivermectin, but the medication was very expensive so I tried using Ivermex 1.9% horse wormer paste. This worked, for a while. I later tried injectable Ivermax (ivermectin 1%) orally and as a lotion.

This helped a lot. But as soon as a quit the doses ( every 2-3 days, 2-3 cc ) the bugs would erupt. I’m starting to think that I have multiple hives, or infestations with different gestation periods, It may also be possible the cocooned insects will not hatch when ivermectin is present. My recommendation, kill them early with a scorched earth policy. I feel I may have them on the run by not taking ivermectin for short periods until I feel the bugs then a complete washdown ( I use ORVIS and/or pemectrin wash ) then topical ivermectin 1% injection on the skin as a lotion.
Good Luck, They are the worst.

  20. Darrell says:

I last posted on May 30th, 2010, if you desire to get the backstory.

I am happy to report that, after dealing with scabies (or possibly bird mites–I never have been quite convinced, one way or the other) from Feb 2010 till about Sept 2010, I seem to be free of the affliction. I say this to encourage the many discouraged readers, of which I was once one!

I used two tubes of Permethrin cream, a couple of weeks apart, as prescribed by my doctor, and it helped, but I was stupidly re-infesting myself. Once cannot battle scabies with the typical, “Write me a prescription and let’s be done with it” mentality. One has to do battle with these parasites using intelligence.

I live in an apartment, so daily washing of everything in hot water is not always possible, but did wash often, at the laundromat, with very hot water, and used a hot dryer.

Took the borax baths 3 times weekly for weeks on end, used tea tree oil on a spot basis for new tiny bites. They say tea tree oil can’t kill the mites, but in my case, having used the two tubes of Permethrin, I had to do something, as the doc wouldn’t prescribe any more right away.

I believe tea tree oil has more effect than some physicians say. Started with tiny, half-ounce bottles from CVS pharmacy, in the nail polish remover area, for $6.99, but later found a 2.0 fluid ounce (60ml) bottle from Wal-Mart for just a bit more, about $8.00. It is 100% pure Australian tea tree oil, not the diluted verson which can be found in the ethnic hair products area in stores. It has to be the good stuff. Being without Permethrin, I gained great peace of mind, just having the tea tree oil in the residence. I have some now, and don’t foresee a day when I will not have a bottle on hand, as scabies can be such a mental and emotional battle.

I believe the solution was a combination of the following:

    Feb thru May 2010
    1) Did laundry often, and with borax added to the water, using hot water and hot dryer settings
    2) Simplified life by using very limited sets of clothing, putting a lot of clothing and towels in quarantine in an unsued room, in tied plastic trash bags. 3) Vacuumed often 4) Slept on couch for a time, avoiding the bed 5) Borax baths 3-4 nights a week. I had a TV in the bathroom for weeks on end. 6) At times, avoided upholstered furniture entirely, sitting only on wooden chairs, wiped with Clorox wipes 7) Constant scrutiny of body for new bites, treating them with Tea Tree Oil. (Unfortunately, it’s easy, while scrutinizing the torso and legs for new bites, to become obessed with scratching the old ones, so I have scars from the scabies lesions which are far worse on the lower legs, and fronts of the thighs, than on my back or other harder-to-reach areas.)

    May thru October 2010
    1) Quit the baths, but kept using tea tree oil. (Never used another prescription product, after the 2nd tube of Permethrin, in about May) 2) Began using the freezer. Before going to work, put the bedsheets, pillowcases, and the pillows themselves, in the freezer. Upon arriving home, take bedsheets out, and put sleeping clothes in freezer till bedtime. 3) In desperation, May 27th, stood the mattress on end and wrapped it with 3 layers of commercial grade plastic food wrap, to keep any buggies in the bed from emerging, and re-infesting. 4) At bedtime, wiped the now plastic-wrapped bed with bleach water solution and let dry under a fan before taking sheets from freezer and placing them on the bed. (Did not use a mattress pad, during this time. Or bed skirts or bed ruffles. They have no place in this battle. You’d think the plastic, with no mattress pad, would make the bed sweaty, but it was not too bad, as I was seeing progress in the infrequency of itchy bites!) 5) Had the carpets steam cleaned. 6) Had a pail of bleach water solution in the bathroom at all times, and would take a cotton dishtowel and wipe down hard surfaces. 7) Drank more citrus juices, to make myself more toxic to the bugies. 8) Had a spray bottle of light bleach solution, too, and sprayed it on everything. 9) Had not itched for months by now, and was very happy. I was discouraged that occasional new, tiny bites would appear, but it was at a rate of only like two per week, and the tea tree oil seemed to have great effect on them.

After many sleepless nights in Feb and Mar, from the itching, and in April, from coming to terms, mentally, with the fact I had a “parasite,” I had been sleeping very well from May forward. (applause) I would put my freshly borax-bathed body on the toilet seat, treat spots with tea tree oil, slip into sheets that had been in the freezer all day, and sleep very well.

In about Sept / Oct 2010, I began to feel the problem may have abated, and flirted with the occasional “Let’s not put the sheets in the freezer before going to work today,” and coming home to a bed with sheets already in place, LIKE REGULAR PEOPLE DO! My God! What a luxury it is, to not redress the bed every single night!

In November, scarcely daring to believe I was “cured,” I wrapped the matress with several more layers of commercial grade plastic food wrap, in large rolls, from Wal-Mart, just as a precaution, in case the first layers had become compromised in six months of having a 220 lb fellow turning over, etc. In November, I also dared to put the foam rubber mattress topper back on the bed, for a softer mattress, and used a mattress pad! LIKE REGULAR PEOPLE!

Take heart, sufferers with scabies, bird mites, or other parasites. Wage warfare with your entire mind, not expecting a single tube of Permethrin, or any other single thing, to be a quick fix.

I am never going to be careless about this, but am relaxed now. Have not taken a borax bath for at least six months. Never did treat the car upholstery, other than a good vacuuming, once. Do not wash the sheets any more frequently than before the plague. Am not living in bondage to paranoia.

But at the same time, if I had an itchy bite, I would calmly treat it with tea tree oil, and put in place some of the above, not all, and fight the battle.

(mix cayanne pepper with clove make a paste the scabies will pour from your body)..was an answer I received from some other victim of scabies.

The truth is I did it all, the constant cleaning, the pill and the cream, oiled my body with olive oil mixed with Neem Oil and tea tree oil every night (which gave me relief and comfort). Sometimes I would mix the cayanne with olive oil and apply it as well. I also did a Vinegar bath or two (do this before you apply the oils). The thing no one tells you (and which is honestly the hardest thing to do when you have scabies) is you have to let your body do it’s magic. This means you could have already killed them and it’s just the after effects, and you are still over doing it.

The last thing I am going to tell you is very important. What ever you do…never ever put the permethrin on your face! It has changed my skin. I was always a very very clear skinned person, and since I put that cream on and left it on overnight, my face has broken out and developed a look like rosacea. Use anything other then that on your face; and by the way it kinda changed the skin on the rest of my body as well.

I caught these scabies from a woman at work.We all sit in the same material chairs, and it has been hell for the past 9months.I have tried just about everything, and when I think I am cured, more bites and bumps appear in a few days.I have washed my sheets, clothes, and everything so much that soon they will be paper thin. I have tried the following and I still can’t rid of these beasts.

Stromectol and Permethrin cream 6 times..neem oil/w teatree oil,hot baths with borax, peroxide, epsom salts-orange oil, listerine(citrus),straight bleach on cotton balls applied to affected areas, scabies killer oil/enzymes online, kleen green enzyme cleaner, and nothing healed me of these things..I decided to finally use Kwell/lindane hoping this would kill these scabies for good..I was willing to take the risk because I can’t stand them anymore. After applying Lindane from my neck to my feet,I thought let’s take out the big guns now. Hard to believe, but about 5 days later, the scabies were back.I have never dealt with anything like this.

I wish I would read something on this website that says I am Cured. If I try too many more things,I will be poor and have no skin left.Good luck in trying to cure these creatures.I hope I find something that will kill them for good!

Still suffering after trying the Sulfer…. Permethrin… Ivermectin…route again. I put the permethrin all over my body, then 8 hours later I covered myself in a sulfer vaseline mixture I made myself. And in between I have been dosing myself with the Ivermectin 1.87% paste. I am still feeling them especially on my legs.

It feels like the meds are working but only about 70%. My skin is extremely burned up from the sulfur…but if I stop putting it on…even for one day…I will be completely infested in a matter of hours! People cannot even begin to know how horrible this is unless they have experienced it first hand. I am not a dirty person at all. If anything I am a germ freak…and carry germ x with me at all times. I just cannot believe I got this disgusting scabies from some scumbag that was to lazy to wash his own ass…and now I have to pay the price!! He rented a room from my mother…and when he moved out…I moved into his room and kept the mattress he used… I slept on it for a few days and then I started feeling bugs on me!!

These mites FEEL like huge bugs…so it’s crazy that they are microscopic. That’s why I treated for bedbugs at first…I never even heard of scabies. I just cant believe that I cannot get the proper treatment for this…and I am shocked about the way I have been treated by all the Doctor’s I’ve seen. I have been laughed at….told I have mental issues….called a drama queen…and told by the ER doctor that there’s nothing they can do for me..and not to come back! Everyday it’s like I’m fighting a war. Somedays I have the strength to I pray that we can get help for this!!!

My next step is to order Benzyl Benzoate 25% from an online pharmacy and I’m going to buy the K9 Atvantix (44% permethrin)..and keep taking the Ivermecton. I pray for anyone who is going threw this HELL! It’s good to know there are others that feel my pain. Good luck and God bless Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

A remark about nail polish helped…As a kid we painted chigger bites with nail polish and they disappeared…I started covering the little white egg sac things with clear nail polish and they dried up and disppeared…now I hit each little sting with clear nail polish for an inch around…I think this is working…each day no new spreading in that area… I am having a very comfortable day…I still wash
everything, change sheets every day, but slowly…it is better.

  25. Kristie says:

I got scabies in October last year from a mattress that was used by a man my mom rent a room to. When he moved out of my mom’s house, that same day I moved into the room he was in. The mattress looked fairly new so I just put new sheets on it and went to bed. That’s the day my life changed from happy and healthy….to completely awful Within a week I would feel little critters running up and down my legs…and I would jump out of bed and look at my legs and didn’t see anything. I Felt like bugs were crawling me…but I don’t see them! Am I going crazy? I never heard of scabies in my life so I had no idea what the hell was going on!! So I thought…it must be bedbugs! Treated the mattress with bedbug spray over and over. But the spray can said you can see the bedbug.

I saw no bugs on the mattress or on me so I was completely freaked out! In the mean time the scabies were getting worse because I’m not getting treatment because I’m treating for bedbugs. Finally I made a Dr. appt and he said you have scabies. I said OMG! Dr…help me….get these things OFF me..he gave me eliminate. I thought okay…I’ll put this cream on…and this nightmare is over!!! Boy was I wrong…the nightmare was just beginning. I used cream…did not work..call Doc…he gives me more…again didn’t work. So he sent me to a Dermatologist. Okay…this guys gonna help me. Get to appointment..explain my symptoms to him in tears almost begging him to help..I cant take it anymore. He said I don’t think you have scabies. I said “say what!” Are you serious?? “I think it’s all in your head” I burst out in tears right there. I could not hold it in. I said how could you say it’s all in my head…you didn’t.

even do a skin scraping? He didn’t want to here anymore..and told me.. maybe I have some mental issues! I said maybe you should not claim your an expert in skin diseases…Because you KNOW NOTHING ABOUT SCABIES! I had to beg him to give me Elimite..and he actually gave me 2 tubes of plus 3 refills (which i told him didn’t work) but it was better then nothing! I walked out of his office totally hopeless because if a skin specialist cant help me….who will?? So it continued for months…seeing different dr’s who treated me like I was some dirty peice of crap…no empathy or compassion for my pain. My outlook on Drs totally changed after this experience…I almost felt a hatred for doctors at that point. After being treated the way I was so many times! Once I told a doc…if your so confident that I don’t have scabies…would you put my jacket on right now? He wouldent of coarse. So I decided I have to help myself.. these Docs are USELESS!

I tried Eurax (crotamatin) dident work. Malathion….dident work. Lindane…nope.. Ivermectin.. nope. Iverpaste horse paste…nope “Sublimed” sulfer( it calls for”precipated” sulfer) but could only find “Sublimed”..nope. Even order Sulferated Lime dip..its for dogs with mange & IT STINKS..and

dident work. Then I ordered “ScabieKiller “and “Dermasil” online. Paid a lot for that stuff…no results. The devastation I felt after using all them…and getting the same results. Nothing was working! Getting scabies has changed me into a diffrent person. I am depressed..cry all the time. Emmence feelings of hopelessness, I dont go out with friends anymore – Just obsess over these scabies..and getting rid of them!! I want my life f**king back!!! Sometimes I feel…I’d rather be dead then live like this. This is torture! But i’m NOT giving up!! My next step is to try the permethrin, sulfer oinment, and Ivermectin route again. That combo seemed to be the only one that I had the best results with. So i’ll try it again and hope for the best. To all the people out there..you are not alone…and I am so glad I came across this site. All the stories I read made me realize that there are others out there that feel the same way I do. And I can relate to there pain. God bless you….and good luck to all!

I have been fighting scabies for one year now and I am at my wits end. I have tried everything-Permethrin 5 and 10%, eurax, lindne, ivermectin, iverpaste horse paste, sulfer ointment, sulferated line dip, and ordered “ScabieKiller” and “Dermasil” online. Nothing works and it’s absolutly devastating when I try something new and it fails. I have seen so many doctors and everyone of them have been very rude, called me delusional, treated me like dirt.

One was a dermatologist that specializes in skin diseases, he told me I do not have scabies….and maybe I have a mental problem!!! I could not believe my ears! The one person I thought would know about scabies…NEW NOTHING!! I was telling him my symptoms and he actually told me it was “all in my head”. He kept saying that over and over!!! I left his office in tears…totally devastated and completely hopeless! If a doc that specializes in skin diseases wont help me….who will?? I have used soooo much permethrin on my feet that they swelled up so HUGH that I could not walk….and now I have nerve damage in my feet and have excruciating pain when I walk.

I am so depressed…this has destroyed my life. This is torture! but I am so hopeless and sad all the time. I need HELP!!!!!

My Grandmother was in and out of hospitals and rehab’s all last year. She passed away mid-December 2010. Since August of last year she had “an itch” that she could not get rid of. She had seen a doctor who took a skin scrape which came back negative for scabies. They chalked it up to dry skin or eczema. Hundreds of dollars of bottles and bottles of lotions later and a prescription for anti-itch (which we called her itch pill) still no relief was given to Grandma other than eternal rest.

Approx a week after Grandma passed away Mom came down with “the itch”..and then an aunt. My Grandfather got the itch a few weeks before Grandma passed..it wasn’t until after 2 weeks of her passing that I came down with “the itch”. Phone conversations with family were of grief over Grandma’s passing then discussions over “the itch” and if you had it or if you still had it. It’s been extremely stressful as of late and having the itch make it feel like some cruel punishment.

Many hours of Googling when Grandma had it made me think it wasn’t scabies + her test came back negative. The little red bumps look nothing like the Google images of scabies.

Oohh how my mind has been changed…I have bruises from digging and scratching at my self at night…and only at night?!?! Oh I get the occasional itch during the day – but nothing like it is at night.

It started on my wrists..and one between my pinkey finger and ring finger..then around my waist where your belt would go..mostly around my belly button..then under my breasts. I would dig and scratch all night. I would go to bed no problem but come midnight or 1 am I’m waking my self up scratching. Having reached my limit I grabbed what I could..

Ice pack – it worked on my arms at first – soothing the itch
Vicks Vapor Rub..ahh the cool feeling also helped sooth the itch

Being up and wide awake from “the itch” I decided to Google and have come to the conclusion that this is in fact scabies.

Mom’s itch is gone – she said she used an antibiotic ointment (neosporin) on her itch and now its gone. I warned her that it may come back after researching the life span of the scabies and its eggs…its been a few weeks and still no itch for her.

Grandfather tried the cream prescribed by the doctor but said it burnt his skin – he did a test spot and hasn’t used it since. He’s still in misery and now his back has broke out with them.

What I have tried and done to sooth this itch!
Bag Balm $7.00 – for the large can – I bought mine at Safeway behind the pharmacy counter (non-prescription, OTC)
    bagbalm. com
The active ingredients of Bag Balm are 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate 0.3% (antiseptic) in a petroleum jelly USP and lanolin base.
Ointment base no real odor – trying to suffocate these little bastards or slow them down so they can’t “walk” spread them self around. The sulfate base is rather low but could act as somewhat of a repellent though (quoted from another website). I use a rubber glove to apply this stuff all over the itchy area’s for relief at night while sleeping – waist line and under breasts. approx 3-4 days later Relief!!! no more itch and no more bumps!! I rubbed on a think layer each night before bed.

    HOT SHOWER
If you have one of those shower wands – get the water as hot as you can stand it and hold it over the area that itches – you’ll notice that it will REALLY STARTS TO ITCH – then it stops. I imagine the little scabies bastards freaking out – twitching around from the heat – then finally dying. Not sure if this is true or not – it makes me feel better. Scabies die at 122 degrees – human skin burns at 130 after 2 minutes so be careful!!! I only held the hot water over the area until the itch stopped..approx 20-30 seconds.

Itch is gone from under my breast and waist and arms…but now its on the inside of my thighs!

TEA TREE OIL – Safeway – $10 – $12 for tiny bottle of oil.
Applying bag balm and adding a drop of Tea Tree Oil now to my thighs.
Put your glove on – scoop out about a tbsp of the Bag Balm and add a drop of Tee Tree and smear it on. Apply a rather thick coat – your cloths will stick to you but its better than itching all night.

EPSOM SALT – also at Safeway –don’t remember cost but couldn’t have been more than $2- $3 dollars.
I’ve also added taking daily hot hot hot baths with Epsom Salt and a few drop of Tea Tree as well.

Washing and DRYING Bedding and clothes- Avg Dyer gets to be 140-160 degrees – again scabies die at 122 degrees.

Understanding now, how this little mites migrate and re-appear – I have wash all of my bed clothes, limited close contact with my dog and fiance, sleeping in separate room. I washed all of my bedding and dirty clothes yesterday. As soon as I’m done wearing anything it gets walked down to the basement and put in a corner away from traffic area -if its not washed right away. I wore some jeans last night but only for a few hours -when I took them off I put them in the dryer for 30 minutes on high heat. Same with my bedding each night – takes a trip in the dryer before I use it again.

Thigh is clearing up nicely – I have noticed an itch or two in one arm pit and a few more itches around my belly button again. I have reapply more bag balm to the old areas as well as the new area’s just to be sure. I don’t feel that I will be complete done with “the itch” for another week or so – for the rest of my life if I develop an itch ..lets say from dry skin – I will be forever reminded of this hellish experience and fear its return – that is if it ever leaves.

  28. Confused Man says:

I’m sorry for such a long post, but here’s my situation. Just randomly I started getting these rashes on my hand. At first, just kinda figured they were typical rashes and would go away. They didn’t, and within a few days I started experiencing itches that only you guys could relate to. So, I started suspecting bedbugs. A friend of mine had them previously, and I sat on his couch. I started doing research on the internet, and have never been the same since (psychologically-wise). I threw away my carpet, bed, and many of my clothes. Also bombed, and sprayed (supposedly) poison for bedbugs all around areas I felt they could be, or could enter. I did vacuum, but not as thorough as I probably should’ve. It says it should keep killing them for three weeks. But, I was still getting bites/itches. So, I went to the doctor (not a Dermatologist), which told me she didn’t know, but I suggested it may possibly be scabies, and she prescribed me the Permetherin cream. I put it on the other night, and washed everything that could still be contaminated (hopefully).

They say it’s natural for me to still itch, but there seems new bites are appearing. It’s freaking me out, I already suffered from paranoia before this! And, I’m still not 100% sure if it’s scabies or bedbugs or not! The symptoms are nearly identical, from what I gather. I haven’t seen any bedbugs yet, but that doesn’t mean anything. The bites I get are random, and match both infestations. Sometimes they’ll be clumped together, sometimes they’ll be spread. Sometimes they’ll be raised and like a rash, and others it’s just like a flea bite. The only reason that lead me more towards the possibility of scabies is because how long the rash lasts. It’s been roughly two weeks, and they’re still there, although, seem to be mildly clearing up. I would like to thank all you that mentioned alternative methods of curing if the problem persists. I’m still searching for bedbugs like crazy, but in the meantime I can only assume it’s scabies. If so, I guess I either shook hands with, or hugged an infected person. Who that could’ve been? I seriously don’t have a clue. I wish you guys luck, I’ve only experienced this for two weeks, and I can not even fathom dealing with it anymore than I already have.

  29. I will win this war says:

It breaks my heart soooo many people are having the same battle as we are!!! This all started with my infant son approximately 9 mos ago. After repeated, numerous dr visits, FINALLY a diagnosis. After 6 mos! But too late. Now my other 2 daughters and I both have it. I am mortified at the suffering my infant son has had to endure through most of his life thus far. I hope what I have learned can help someone. I have found that colloidal silver spray or gel (health food store) helps to relieve the itching. It seems to work best with any raised bumps or when that pin pricked feeling comes around. Tea tree oil is what we are getting the best immediate results with in killing them. .(Half tea tree oil, mixed with half olive oil…try a tablespoon of each…apply EVERYTIME you get the itch or bumps ALL OVER if possible. Spray the silver first for the itch then apply. Apply the tea tree after your shower, preferably at night because smell is strong unless you don’t have anyplace you have to be in the morning. Soak in a tub with a capful of tea tree if you can). Lemon oil combined with tea tree oil is what we are using on our belongings, 1 cup of water, 20 drops of each in a spray bottle. Lemon oil is supposed to be highly effective in killing them. I am cautious to apply topically because it will cause photosensitivity.
I have recently learned that taking Vitamin C is very effective…Vit C helps to clean out toxins in your body. (Maybe why Lemon oil is so effective?) Sulfur soap, or sulfur-lavendar combo soap if you can find it, can help. (Lavender is a deterrant for scabies.) By the way, tea tree oil kills scabies more effectively than permethrin according to many studies. We all took our doses of permethrin and are simply getting worse. However, I gave up on the permethrin to take effect-I have a life I want back- and gave my son the 1st treatment of tea tree oil using the olive oil when he was about to lose his mind from scratching. I saw immediate results within a few hours!! Black Walnut oil is what we are using to kill them internally. (Dab a few drops behind baby’s ears if you have a little one instead of giving internally. The body will absorb it that way.) I have also read and will be attempting a treatment using Aquaphor (can purchase at Walmart or Walgreens, generic has same ingredient.) mixed with Sulfur…read that it suffocates them. That way you don’t have to go around smelling like tea tree in public. I just don’t know the right combination just yet. I also refuse to sleep on my mattress til we are all cured. We are sleeping on air mattresses that can be wiped down immediately with our tea tree spray then we launder clothes immediately in the washer or place in a bag. As you can see, I am a mother at war. I am battling continuously til we are no longer sufferers of this relentless parasite. I am also very sympathetic to all of you out there who have turned to the medical profession with little to no answers for your EXTREME desperation for help. These are the remedies that are working for all of us. I personally am feeling less and less activity inside, biting is getting weaker, my kids are all sleeping right now. I hope this helps someone. Take care.

  30. HR says:

Wow, most of you people are nuts!!! This is easier to cure than the flu. (flu lasts longer and there is no cure) Please don’t go crazy about these little bugs. Keep in mind, you probably only have 8-10 actual bugs on your body. First of all, keep your body and house clean. Take care of your pets. Pretend that you have common sense. Take showers regularly like clean people do. Take care of yourself. Stop picking, destroying your body, and going nuts, take care of the problem. Grab a couple red-bulls or your favorite energy drink and clean up the house.

It’s difficult to test for and hence, most doctors won’t believe you or help you out. Plus, dr visits and prescriptions are expensive and should be avoided whenever possible since doctors and pharmaceutical companies have no interest in healing you. They make more money when you are not healed, so always eliminate the doctors and prescriptions whenever possible.

Most everything I’ve read on these comments are bull and we all know that 99% of all diseases are psychosomatic, so we not only need to fix the problem (extremely easy) but we also need to find emotional and mental peace. Meditate, pray, or whatever you have to do. You will be cured almost immediately.

Some items commonly used will work great to fix the problem. Keep in mind, you don’t need to go nuts. I know constant itching and knowing that bugs live inside you can make you crazy, not to mention the insomnia that intensifies this.

I’ve had bad backne and breakouts on my arms and all over my body for at least 8 years. I’ve seen the doctor and they never helped. I finally decided to try treating for scabies and within days i felt better, within 2 weeks my acne was under control and now for the first time in 8 years, I don’t feel ashamed to take my shirt off. I can actually go swimming now, and it only took a couple bucks and a few days to fix.

    here’s the roundup…

-Alcohol… VERY BAD FOR YOUR SKIN. Alcohol is used for prep when using injections, pricking for diabetes tests, things like that. Never ever ever use alcohol on your skin for any other reason. It’s very bad. It will dry out your skin and cause other problems. If you really need some type of astringent, use witch hazel. Never use alcohol for treating acne of any other skin condition. Just like momma always said… alcohol makes your problems worse. 🙂

-Epsom salts… it’s always good to soak in Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) from time to time. it refreshes your skin and draws out impurities. This doesn’t need to be part of the scabies treatment, but keep this product in mind as it’s always refreshing and healthy to take an occasional hot bath with Epsom salts, especially after a hard day. it tends to loosen up your muscles and relieve stress as well. Natural mineral springs have this same affect, due to containing this same mineral.

-Sulfur… always keep some sulfur powder in your house. it’s a natural antibiotic, anti-fungal, and pesticide. Farmers use it to dust crops and it’s been used for hundreds of years for infections. If you get a cut, clean your cut and rub some sulfur on it. Keep it dry, never use products like neosporin that will only keep your skin soggy and take forever to heal. Neo is a terrible product. Keep your cut dry and use a little sulfur. it will stop the bleeding and kill any bacteria. Sulfur soaps are nice to have in your bathroom. You can make it or buy it, either way, sulfur soap is great for your skin.

-Tea Tree Oil… another good item to keep in the house. It will kill most fungi including nail fungus, ringworm, athletes foot, etc. Refreshing smell and cooling feeling when used on the skin. Full strength Tea Tree Oil will cause a burning feeling similar to alcohol if used on sensitive areas. Make sure you dilute it with mineral oil or glycerin. it will also kill lice, bugs, scabies… many other things.

-Permithrin… DO NOT USE ON CATS!!! YOUR CAT WILL LIKELY DIE!! Never use anything on your cat unless isn’t specifically made for your cat.
Synthetic Pyrethrin Insecticide. Pyrethrin is made from dried Chrysanthemum flowers. Very low toxicity in humans, dogs, and most farm animals. A 1% solution typically doesn’t work to cure scabies. A 5% solution should kill all scabies on your body almost immediately. After 15 minutes, your skin will break it down and absorb it and it will stay in your skin for a long time even after washing.

    ————————
Here’s the quickest way to get rid of scabies. You have to repeat this process 2 times only, unless you have a person or animal that reinfects you.
Buy some pyrethrin (or synthetic permethrin, which is better). You want no more than a 5% solution on your skin or it can have adverse affects. Even though it’s a very safe product, too much of anything can be bad. You can get 10% perm from the farm supply, pet store, or buy it on amazon. Permectrin-II works great and 1-quart is only $16. Mix 1/2 cup with 1/2 cup of your favorite lotion, This gives you a 5% solution. You can put a few drops of Tea-Tree oil in it if you like, but you don’t need to.

    Day 1
Take a shower and dry off with a clean towel, just like you usually do every morning. Take your cup of 5% perm/lotion and put in on your whole body. Watch out for your eyes and try not to get it in your mouth, it tastes like crap. Rub in the lotion. You don’t need to get your body gooey with it, use it sparingly and rub it all in like you would normally. Go ahead and put on some clean clothes and go about your day like normal.

You do need to wash all of your clothes and bed clothes (sheets, blankets, pillow cases). Spend the day cleaning up the house and washing clothes. Follow the instructions on the permethrin and spray your house with it. Spray the carpet, furniture, clothes, linens, spray everything, it’s not going to hurt. Wait an hour or so for it to dry before your kids play on the carpet. Same for young pets. Personally, I cleared out my closet, sprayed the whole closet with the perm spray following the instructions on the container. Scabies don’t live very long without a warm body, so this is just a precaution. By the way, keep spraying the perm in and around your house every 6 months to help control flees, spiders, ants, and every other insect. You’ll never need am exterminator because this is the same thing they use.

Make sure your animals are treated. Take them to the vet and tell them that he was exposed to mange and needs to be dipped… or you can follow the animal instructions for dipping on the perm container. Your pets are the most likely cause of being infected in the first place, so make sure you take care of them as well.

    Day 2-6
The scabies are most likely gone!!! But there can still be unhatched eggs. Use your new sulfur soap when you take a shower every morning. Use a clean towel every time like clean people usually do. Wash your bed clothes regularly. Don’t wear clothes multiple days, and don’t hang worn clothes back in the closet with the clean clothes.

    Day 7
Repeat everything from Day 1. Use your lotion, dip the dogs, wash your clothes, spray the house…

Your done. Say goodbye to bugs and be at peace knowing that you are bug free. Take preventative measures. Stay clean. Shower daily, vacuum at least every couple days, dust your house regularly, wash your clothes and bed clothes regularly, and do everything else that clean people do. Good personal hygiene and keeping your house clean will make your life so much better. If you have undesirable or questionable company, spray off the couch or bed when they leave. Living a clean lifestyle drastically reduces your chances of being dirty. Keep your pets clean and healthy. Make sure they are on bug/worm medication/treatments all year around. if you get the itchies again, use your lotion. Continue to wash with the sulfur soap regularly, it’s good for your skin.

Remember, you didn’t have any scabies after Day1. They were dead 15 minutes after you applied the lotion.
If you think scabies still live in you, put your head in the microwave, because that’s where the problem exists.

  31. jj says:

Dunno why you wash your bedding each day, microwave them. Just stick shoes one at a time in the microwave for one minute if they have no metal on them, hats, and socks. You think these guys can live after being microwaved for a minute or two?

Plastic coat your bed and pillow and just nuke them it saves a ton of washing

I am actually considering just nuking the clothes i am wearing ever two three hours.

Had a cotton hoodie that had a burn mark on it after about 15 seconds…. but with power on 60% i just left it in for three minutes…. might set my alarm clock to wake me up in the middle of the night so i can nuke my sheets and pillow case.

Don’t microwave your clothes, some clothing can take it. Microwaves concentrate their waves at the rotating plate so it is possible for the bugs to survive if they are above that area.

if you do try it though make sure your clothes are wet so it turns into steam. You might as well just boil them.

watch out for sheets and clothing though they can burn rather fast…

I would try 15 secs on then turn off

I work in a retirement home as a nurse and one of the residents had classical signs and symptoms of scabies, she was treated with the cream and behold 3 months later she still is itching and a rash is still present. Since her treatment 3 more people have been treated for it. The management won’t call the health department, the head nurse doesn’t think that it is scabies because a doctor has never verified the diagnosis under the microscope!!!! I’m soooo terrified about getting it. I wear gloves when ever in contact but i feel like scabies could be on door knobs and stuff. What should I do?? This is bad.

  33. Tortugita says:

I just got diagnosed with scabies yesterday:( GROSSSSSSS So the gave me these pills to take. Has anyone taken the pills before and do the work fast. I only have few spots that are broken out, but the itching is horrible and i don’t think i can stand it much longer.

  34. jon wakefield says:

Don’t let a diagnosis of Scabies get you down! I have been itching since summer of 2010, originally thinking it was due to a “heat rash.” I have been to three doctors and actually quite surprised that the first two had no idea what I had! The first doctor (a dermatologist) said I had “contact dermatologist” and prescribed some ridiculously expensive steroid foam. That didn’t work so went to an allergist who diagnosed me with “fungal infection.” Hence more creams that didn’t work. Then I went to a third doctor – another dermatologist – who immediately knew what it was (bless his heart). However, I have had three treatments of Permethrin (elemite) with no positive results-in fact, my itching seemed to get worse–it was very excoriating.

I then went online and started doing some research and discovered that SULFUR kills the little B$#%*&ds! As soon as I put on a 5% cream, the itching stopped by the next morning! So I would recommend to ignore the expensive creams and go with the natural solution. Good luck.

  35. Deba says:

Hi I work at a nursing home as a nurse’s aide and scabies is a big problem. They do prescribe the 1% pemethrin bodycream for people who get it. Well in my experience to prevent myself from getting it I can tell you that cream does not work.

This is what I do..take a bath in Apple Cider Vinegar a little on the strong side. Let It soak through your skin. Then use a perfume free body wash or soap. Afterward I put Oil of Oregano on anything I think may start looking like red bumps or blisters. Oil of Oregano is a very good natural Killer of mites. You can start feeling the tingling immediately. Wash all bedding, clothing, replace deodorant, use every thing new…you should hopefully start feeling less itch and the skin will start healing soon. As far as the scars if you don’t itch when the scabies attack you wont have scars but if you itch it makes a scar…then you would have to use Biotin or something to soothe the marks. They will eventually fade. Its a Nasty Problem To Deal With. The key is to see that you have no more break outs…then you know its working…

  36. Cured says:

I want to share how I got rid of them. I read on another site about this method and it worked. I’ve had them twice now, so I’m getting to be an old pro. Here are my tips and the method. I had them for 8 months the first time and thought I would go out of my mind. I tried every dumb doctor’s method. I had them for 3 weeks the second time after listening to the other wonderful person.

    1) For 10 days in a row, take 3 parts water, 1 part bleach, and after your daily shower spray and wipe it all over from the hairline down. If you prefer baths, put bleach in HOT bath and soak for at least 15 minutes. Water should smell like an over chlorinated pool. Completely air dry before putting on clothes. Use a kitchen scratcher pad to exfoliate eggs under skin. Wash it after shower. I did this twice a day for the first 4 days.
    2) If you have it in your hair, take turpentine and spot treat each sore on your head.
    3) I took my showers at night, because I didn’t have to wash my sheets every day that way. I washed them the first day and about day 4. Never again during treatment and I’m healed.
    4) You will still think you have them for as long as a year after treatment. The itch is the feces coming out of your skin. You will have pimple bumps for a long time. If you have burrows, you are not healed.
    5) Never wear the same clothes two days in a row. Wash everything. If it can’t be washed, put it in an airtight bag for a week or longer. I also just put things in the dryer on hottest setting for 30 minutes.
    6) When doing laundry, wear latex gloves. One pair for loading machine, different pair for pulling out clean clothes.
    7) Go to the CDC’s website. It helps you understand how they produce. Eggs are hatched ever 1-4 days.
    8) If your chair is infected or car seat. Spray with Raid spider spray.
    9) Vacuum often.
    10) Don’t infect others if you can keep from it. They will just give it back to you.
    11) Keep a calendar journal.

I am a midwife in Nicaragua and have treated several babies and children with scabies. My husband and I as well as a toddler had scabies more than 20 years ago. Go down to hardware store and buy some sulfur powder, usually in animal section. Mix a couple of tablespoons in a jar of Vaseline. Cover your mattress with a sheet of plastic and put on old sheets. Cover every square inch of your body with the sulfur/Vaseline mixture and wrap up in another old sheet. Do this for three nights. If you can, set your mattresses outside in the sun for a few hours, wash your pillows and bedding in hot water with just a little bit of Bleach. Wash all stuffed toys too. It should clear up, if not, repeat. You will eventually go mad or it will go away. Start taking b-complex as this helps your immune system. Some one with a good immune system can sleep in a bathtub of these mites and never feel it. I hope this helps

  39. rachel says:

    hi everyone,

I have had scabies now for two weeks. I caught it early, and started treatment right away. I have found a few things very helpful with the itching. First I take soak in a bath with tea tree oil, sulfur and neem oil. Neem not only deals with the scabies mites naturally, it also soothes the skin, numbs the pain, relieves the itching, reduces the inflammation and redness, and heals any secondary infection that might have occurred because of scratching and open lesions. Sulfur also helps with itching. It works by killing the mites which cause scabies symptoms, but it is generally considered safe for topical use by humans. After I take a bath, I apply petroleum jelly mixed with sulfur from head to toe. This keeps the skin from drying out.
Note: If you cannot afford go to the doctor you can get sulfur( its called nu-stock for animals) and permethrin (which is the actual Rx doctors give) at a animal feed stores, tractor supply stores etc. Because they will be for animals (cows etc.) they are much stronger strength. Make sure to test them first or dilute them.

I have had this same symptoms like that since April of 2010. I still haven’t gone to the doctor since I thought it was from my dogs being around me to much but to this day it has calm down. I still itch every now and then and I also got those bumps on my wrist and in between my fingers. I still have the scar marks where my elbow bends but I noticed when there was a cold front I wouldn’t itch as much. As soon as the hot weather came back it started acting up again. I don’t no if it was cause the scabies act up more with the warm then the cold can anyone help me please I don’t no how to break it down to my girlfriend about it and its real embarrassing to tell her. Can anyone give me some advice?

  41. scott T says:

I had gotten diagnosed with scabies about 3 maybe 4 weeks ago now. I had then for a while before actually going to the doctor. I thought it was something like flea bites or bed bugs, but when I got the diagnose I know EXACTLY how I got it. After some research I got it from a kitten with mange I had not slept around or anything so that had to be it. I got the permethrin cream 5% prescription, the instructions just said to apply and leave on for 10 hour and wash off and repeat in 3 days. I did that exact thing 3 times and I noticed difference after the 2nd time and then after the 3rd major difference and so It was good. Well I have spots where the breakouts were, but I don’t THINK I have any new bumps but I read that I may still get bumps but that does not mean that I still have it. It could just be the healing and just my body disposing of the feces and what ever was left behind. But no not getting woken up to severe itching anymore, but I got worried and done another application today because I found like 2 or 3 bubble looking bumps on the in side of 2 of my fingers so I would assume that its just still healing. I’m HOPING that’s’ what is is because I live with a few people and no one is complaining that they might have it. But I think I will try out the bleach bath stuff just in case. What should I do I’m DESPERATE, I don’t want to have to worry that I may still have it. Please ANYONE email me at legendarybod@aim.com yeah I made this email at 14, but PLEASE any suggestions cleaned linens and clothes in hot washers setting

To all suffering with scabies and can’t get rid of it! It may be Follicuitis!
My oldest son brought home scabies July of 2010. My entire family also started to get bumps by August! It was a disaster, emotionally draining, financially exhausting and just a very horrible time. We cleaned for weeks, bagged clothes, washed bedding every day, vacuumed cars the whole nine yards. We were all treated, family of 6, but my two sons, sister and myself still itched and have spots off and on for 5months still after the treatment! Still getting the spots and going insane with this itch and spots on our body! My husband and youngest son were fine after treatment still itchy but no spots. Many tears were shed with no results from any docs and probably used 30 tubes of cream between all 6 of us in the family for the 5 months. We were giving up and depressed so bad it was hard to even function.
My son started to research the internet and found out about a skin disorder called Follicuitis! Inflammation caused by your hair follicles and they can get infected causing theses red bumps, pimple like sometimes with puss.I went to the doc it was treated with an antibiotic and I don’t itch or have any abnormal spots anymore! Amen! Thank God! Its been about a week since I finished my prescription and I feel great! I hope this helps it often can happen after scabies because we itch then cause irritation and infection! with the original diagnosis of scabies. I know the crazy your going through! God Bless and I will be praying for you all. Sue 🙁

There needs to be an investigation into this by someone reputable enough that has alot of money

Maybe with a reward to a scientist who finds out what alot of people are not delusional about

and would gain a patent on the only known cure. Entailing huge profits which would gain alot of attention of investors world wide to jump aboard. Super Bug is all I can fathom or something not known to science yet? Imagine America being warned by National News that scabies has evolved as incurable and highly contagious. One such news story did do a report on US soldiers returning from Iraq and Pakistan with drug resistant skin parasites.
Pay attention to Jesse Ventura’s (Conspiracy Theory that comes on History channel) I just watched a report he did on the Top Secret Military Research Labs in America alleging the government does have biological labs studying insects and god only knows what else? The show I watched was about one of the labs located in Lyme Connecticuit (on some island out there) which is a conspiracy theory on the development of Lyme disease -that comes from ticks. He also uncovered that this military lab was the first of its kind and America obtained the top scientist from Nazi camps to be its founder and top dog. Look whats happening to that Wikileaks guy and how many governments are involved with his captivity.

My husband & I have been battling scabies for a year & a half. Our 2 yr old son has it too. We saw a Dr and she gave us permethren cream & it didn’t work so we went back. She gave us the same cream & it didn’t work so she gave us an antibiotic & the same cream again & it didn’t work that time either. Finally we got a different DR. We have tried a million things over the past 8 months to no avail. We bug bombed our house & washed everything in Epsom salt (it contains sulfur) & hot hot HOT water. We sprayed all of our mattresses with a mixture of Epsom salt HOT water & bleach, vacuumed everything that could be, & wiped every surface that we could with bleach wipes. Finally after no prescription working we went to a herbal store & bought sulfur capsules & acne soap that contains sulfur. So far so good we have been doing this self treatment for a week & it seems to be helping. The only other thing we can do is move from where we live. I am about to the point where I would dive in to a pool filled with sulfur to get rid of these things. Anyone have any other suggestions?

I am from Sydney Australia. I hate Scabies so much. We got infected after my daughter had a rash and kept getting diagnosed with allergies and school sores. My husband and i started to have an insane itch and we finally found a doctor who diagnosed us with scabies. After treating washing and disinfecting our whole house for 3 days and than retreating again 5 days later we thought we were free of them. WRONG…We were still breaking out and itchy so saw another dr who told us the first lotion we were given is not very effective so we were prescribed Lyclear lotion. Have treated twice and stripped the house and washed and cleaned for 2 weeks, got new pillows, steam cleaned all furniture and mattresses, bombed our cars with Flea bombs, froze wallets and purses, sprayed everything i could with surface spray. I am going insane. My husband thinks i am crazy. I wish we never got these mites. They are a nightmare.

My boyfriend was diagnosed with scabies three months ago. He lives about an hour away and I live with our daughter at my parents’ house. The first time he got it I wouldn’t let him come near me or the baby until he was treated. Low and behold, he treated himself, but didn’t do his laundry between his first and second treatment. About two months later the bumps reappeared on him, and we were still intimate, because he thought it was spider bites from his old apartment building. Of course, the bites became itchier and more numerous. I went to our daughter’s pediatrician and got two bottles of permethrin, one of him and one for me and the baby. My left shoulder has been itching for over a week now, and I see bites, although my mother thinks I’m just being paranoid. I can’t find borax at the grocery store, but I bought lavender oil, and plan to wash everything and then treat myself and my daughter. I’m so scared that I’ll be battling this for months! I could scream at the top of my lungs!

It has traveled that bad I have them on most parts of my body. This is horrible, I am embarrassed. Hi I got scabies in April and like most of you thought they had gone but have had a few more dots on different parts of my body they started in my hair and legs but I haven’t had them as bad looking as the ones in the pictures!! I did use 6 bottles of Malathion and premetherin thought that would work but obviously hasn’t!!
My worst parts though was my backside and my bottom lip that was so disgusting having your lip look like it was going to fall off!!Now also one day I was taking my nail polish off and about 20 of the little mites came out of just one toe so I have now done it again but didn’t find anything, but I have more dots on the top half of my body this time which isn’t nice, but i feel they are still around my head so I’m now going to re-treat this and also they have to be only on me as I closed my house down for five months after steaming,washing/drying at high temp, wrapping things up and putting it in a cupboard.
I have noticed someone mentioned lemon in one of the statements above/below as the funny thing is since I have been drinking fresh lemon juice in hot water I have found quite a few dead looking ones on my bed so I got a bleached covered cloth and collect them and throw them in the toilet quick! Didn’t and still don’t know if this has helped but I’m going to carry on doing it until I see no more in my bed or dots on my skin.I hope this has helped some of you and please keep letting us all know if yours have gone,I wouldn’t wish this on any one!!!!!

  57. NoJOKE! says:

FIRST, I want to send all my heartfelt compassion and sympathy out to EVERYONE who is suffering from SCABIES, or any awful rash condition very similar. This is a dreadful misfortune that can happen to ANYONE-so don’t feel isolated and depressed and singled out. This is (for whatever reason you may believe) something that happened-now inevitable- and the best way to approach such a seemingly crippling (physically, emotionally, socially, etc) condition is 100% honesty with yourself, with your friends, family, loved ones, and a battle-face of optimism to triumph this wretched parasite. And EDUCATE YOURSELF on the: 1) facts-clinical research which has been done and proved, 2) the fiction-there is (I believe) a lot of misinterpretation and misdiagnosis for Scabies, and 3) what I feel is the most important- listening to personal stories of the trails and tribulations of us sufferers of Scabies. Everyone’s story is a little different and it should be because we are all different individuals with different physical, chemical, biological, and spiritual constitutions and insects are a lot smarter than humans know, therefore they are going to have different life strategies for each individual person. The bottom line though is that is sucks!!! It is so awful, but I am seeing this Scabies invasion experience as a personal transformation opportunity. I am not a dermatoligist or an osteopath, but I have a University of California degree with background in biology, chemistry, entomology (the study of insects) and ecology. So here is what I have to say about my experience:

-I came into close skin-to-skin contact with a person who had an unknown rash
-1.5 to 2 weeks later I began to notice minute “mosquito” like bumps on my stomach and forearms
-I saw a doctor about 3 weeks into these symptoms (not much but some itch by this point)
-The MD said it was dry skin (definitely NOT Scabies) “moisturize and come back if it gets worse”
-It got noticeably worse that night and I RESEARCHED!!! Only to self diagnose myself with SCABIES!
-The next day I find out my friend had been diagnosed with Scabies and I saw my doctor that day too.
    -I tell the Doc A, B, and C=SCABIES-duh right?
-She denies it, says maybe its fleas or “something else”-real comforting.
-I tell her I want the topical Permethrin cream immediately. She says “Okay, if you do have Scabiest or dont the permethrin most likely wont hurt to apply it.”
-I follow all the standard Scabies eradication procedures of cleaning and drying clothing, bedding, shoes, chin-toe application of Permethrin all night (about 14 hours) and I sleep in a sleeping bag and one pillow which were re-washed immediately the next day.
-I felt relieved cuz I was under the impression I was done with this humiliating process.

-THE RASH HAS ONLY GOTTEN WORSE! Zero signs or receding bumps and zero subsidence of itching. It has spread to my entire body now, even my head and face.
-I have had Scabies for about 1.5 months now and it is definitely the worse it has been.
-Multiple sources conclude: itching can continue (because your body is still reacting to the foreign material lodged deep inside your skin) for up to 4 weeks after Permethrin application-even though the mites are dead. But you should NOT see new bumps and breakouts!
-Well I saw nothing but new breakouts and worse itching.

Now my logic tells me that a) if indeed the insecticide is effective (Permethrin-the most widely prescribed treatment) then some or many of the mites should have died with proper application-and believe me, I got every inch spread thick ‘n’ plenty from my chin down. b) If some or many of the mites did indeed die with the permethrin application (which they should have if it is “proven’ to kill mites) then there should have been a subsidence in my bumps and itching breakouts. There was zero subsidence!

Now, from studying some of the detrimental effects of agricultural insecticide use, not only does it have dramatically known and unknown negative impacts on the local ecosystem, but QUITE OFTEN the insects build an immunity to the insecticide. The reason for this is because there is usually a few insects in a giant insect population who have a few recessive genes which are resistant to certain chemicals (just like humans) and end up surviving after all the other ones die and then they reproduce with each other, and yes folks “evolve,” to a new strain of “POISON” resistant/immune insects which continue preying on the agricultural crops and have zero problems with the high, then higher, and higher quantities of insecticides the farmers continue applying.

So, I believe (in my case at least) that this is exactly what has happened. I have contracted a Permethrin resistant Scabies mite. So what am I going to do? No more insecticides! My body is already pissed at me for suffering once through Permethrin. My next logical insight comes from the past: learn from history.

Scabies has been around for hundreds, if not thousands of years. As a species, it is growing, adapting to regional climates and micro climates, thinking, eating, and yes evolving. But, people didn’t have the insane chemical insecticides we posses more than 50 years ago. So, what did people do? There were lots of remedies, some maybe better than others and some among cultures which may have been very effective but unknown to us today. The point which I am trying to make is people have had Scabies for centuries and have dealt with it and cured it through natural approaches. After all Scabies is a naturally occurring insect so logically something which nature produces (or a combination of them) should be able to get rid of them.

I am not cured yet by any means. But, I have abandoned the harsh chemical approach and I am going to look at my body as if it is an ecosystem a little out of whack and I am going to use history, stories, natural remedies which have worked for others, consultation from acupuncturists and Naturopath’s, a sharper more conscious exercise and diet (after all immune system is key to fighting foreign bodies within any biological system) regime to get it back self sustaining and rid of this unwanted foreign invader. BTW, Don’t believe anybody who says not to exercise because the mites like body heat. Stay healthy, optimistic, honest, and most of all in tune with your body throughout this entire battle. That, I believe, will be the key to a successful, and swift, eradication of Scabies.

These are some of the approaches I am going to try over the next few weeks:
    1) Epsom Salt and Cayenne baths every day (20 min) with scrubbing exfoliating sponge.
    2) 15 parts olive oil, 1 part tea tree oil, 1.5 parts neem tree seed oil-lather ENTIRE body. Sleep in it.
    3) Camp out at night alone from my room and house for 5 days. Use 2 sleeping bags- 2 sets of clothing-one always fresh for the next days use. Coming home every morning to bathe and apply oils.
    4) wash ALL my clothes yes. But, I’m not going to go ape stuff like a lot of other people seem to do with the chemical products and vacuuming on every square inch of their life. If the mites don’t have a HUMAN host for more than 72 hours they DIE! Sure to be safe, give it a little more than 72 hours, but that still about 3-4 days. So to play it safe I’ll do 5 days of the most basic out of contact lifestyle with everything I come into contact with accounted for and washed and my body naturally killing off the mites from a particular natural remedy to come.

I know everyone is different and everything works different. And believe me, I have felt plenty of the embarrassment and anxiety and shame and regret from having this atrocious pest on me-the same as everybody else. But, I truly believe that with the attitude of optimism, focus, attention to detail (inside and out), RESEARCH, determination, patience, honesty, and opportunity for more self-love, Scabies will leave your body. My heart goes out to everyone suffering from Scabies. You are not alone and you WILL get better. I send out prayers for you to feel more openness and spaciousness in your life, to lift that cramping distress and anxiety that traps us in our own minds and blocks us from feeling free.

    Peace and Love,
    Trevor

I also showered washed with hartzx ultra guard rid flea and tick in the shower according to the directions on the container. The hartz contains phenothrin .2%. do not get it in your eyes. I do not think I would want a boyfriend who did not stick with me in good times and bad times.I think I have scabies but have been to 48 doctors and they do not know squat. I think the best thing to do is wipe your purses down with clorox wipes and spray the inside of your car with maybe lice spray . go vacuum your car out and spray it good. I am just more worried about you, scabies is horrible. It can take a toll emotionally and you need support. Call a feed store and ask them. They would know how to kill scabies because they sell products to kill them on animals.Ivermectin is the only thing I know that kills them but not the eggs.I know if you keep oil on your skin they will suffocate when they hatch. The mom in the above post has it down pat.Find you someone who will stick by you no matter what.

  61. deanna says:

The boy may have had scabies and scratched but as far as looking like cigarette burns it sounds like he got impetigo which some people call the cigarette burn rash ie scar it is a wonder he is alive because that can shut down kidneys if left untreated.I have been to 48 doctors and no one can tell me what it is. I asked to be treated for scabies got Ivermectin, used permethine spelled wrong I assume , dam. doctors should only be paid if they can treat you . I think I picked up impetigo because of scratching and all this started from a bug bite last July. They say impetigo will fade, the scars from it , do you know if he was burned with a cigarette. If not them it is a slang word used for impetigo the cigarette looking burn scar or rash. looks like someone burned you with a cigarette. I have been tested for staph and if I put what I looked like except none on my face it would put the whole physicians in the USA to shame. Best of luck to the boy or man now. The scars should have faded at least most of them.

    Hi everyone,

I am soooo sorry we are all being tortured by this beats called the scabie mite. Its absolutely disgusting! I have become very humble through this experience. And a heck of a housekeeper, I use borax all over..the furniture, the floors what ever, laundry…you name it.

I did find some great news an I think this might be our ticket to sanity. A lovely herb called cayenne pepper!!! I found out that the Aztec Indians used this herb for healing properties…than in the 1600 hundred a doctor read up on this herb and found it effective on scabies as well as other skin disorders. I thought what the heck, I am going to try it, I had these bumps down by my crotch area. I decided to rub a mixture of Vaseline, sulfur powder from the health food store and pure cayenne pepper. Now folks this burned like crap, but i have been doing this along with taking a hot bath in Epsom salt and cayenne pepper together…oh my god they are running off my body!! it is literally burning them off my skin!!!!! I feel amazing. and not to mention my skin looks tanner ha! …look up the benefits of cayenne pepper. Peace out…

i had scabies it came once, i had no idea what it was it drove me nuts i was up late at night scratching and trying to relive it with icepack which did help
i found out it was scabies so i used a cream called lyclear you put it on all over and leave it on for 24 hours, this worked well but a month later it came back i did the same thing, used the cream and i used it again like 3 day later to make sure and this time it killed them off for good !!! good luck people.

  64. Ms. Itchalot says:

    Hi people,

Let me first just say, i know your irritation if you are dealing with Scabies. It has been driving me nuts for about 2 weeks now. What i have found for temporary relief at night time is calamine lotion. Use with cotton balls dab on effected area then leave on to dry then wear your normal things you would wear to bed and it should cover you till the next morning. But remember i do say temporary. I’m also using a oral antihistamine and a cream the doctor prescribed but in between everything else, you will occasionally still itch so that’s where i use the calamine lotion and everything is starting to clear up.

    Good luck guys

My daughter and I were diagnosed with scabies late last yr..we tried the rx’s and it went away for a few months then in late June it came back…the itching is worse and now my mom and sister who live in another household have it as well…my oldest son is itching but my other two kids never seem to have gotten it….we are around the same people daily and yet none of them have seemed to get it as well…we have tried the tea tree oil, coconut oil…lavender and permethrin again and again…even sprayed the house in alcohol and lavender…nothing seems to stop the itching…even tried sulfur..oatmeal…baking soda and other home remedies….my daughter is just turning two and i feel so sorry for her…hopefully something gives because she doesn’t need to go through this!!

  66. Itchy says:

I contracted it again. I read on another site about baths of 3 cups of Borax, 2 cups of Epsom Salt, and 2 cups of Peroxide. Make the bath as hot as you can stand and soak for 30 minutes. I also added Neem oil to my lotion. I also used cattle permethrin mixed with equal parts of Vaseline.
On the cdc’s website it says that they’re hatched and it takes 2 weeks for them to become adults and lay their own eggs. That’s why doctors tell you to use Permethrin and then use it again in 7 days. You’re killing nymphs that can’t breed yet. Follow this rule.
If you are cured you will still get bumps and itch for a while. If you get the zigzag lines or raised bumps where they’re burrowing, that’s how you know that you’re not cured.

  67. doris says:

I’ve was misdiagnosed at the age of 27. I’m now 42…I am realizing I have scabies. The mites have laid eggs in my scalp – in the “soft” spot on my crown. I may have gotten this when I was a baby. In any case, I have gone to numerous dermatologists and they all said it was sebhorreic dermatitis or psoriasis. I have done research on fungus for over a year, thinking that was the cause. Then, I noticed that sometimes the scabs on my head clear after about a month or two and then new scabs form. This is the hatching of new mites and then they burrow in a new place to lay eggs. About 3 weeks ago, I adopted a regiment of bleach bathing, clove oil and MSM on my scalp and face. I am washing clothes with bleach. I’ll keep posting on my updated condition….some days are better than others. If I pay close attention, I now feel little “bites” that I never noticed before….

  68. Logan says:

This stuff drives you right to the brink of insanity. Two treatments of permethrin cream worked for me. Just make sure ya be very cautious and be sure to wash everything that came into contact with your skin, as reinfection is an overwhelming probability if you don’t do so. Also, if you have it, being intimate is a bad idea. My girlfriend got infected in this way.

  69. sharonphillips says:

shower once a day in dog flea & tick shampoo that has permethrin in it. wash you clothes, sheets, towels, rugs & pillows in HOT water and dry in a HOT dryer. any carpet, mattresses or furniture can be sprayed with flea & tick spray for the home. take 2 (two) benedryl at bedtime for itching…and zyrtec in the mornings. treat everyone in the home, whether they show symptoms or not. quarantine yourselves, if possible for as long as possible…at least 36 hours. good luck to anyone who has this. it’s HORRIBLE!!

I am very thankful for your suggestion and detailed description of your experience. I now know what these ‘critters’ are and can not thank you enough for taking the time to put your feed back on this site. I wrote a very long blog and it did not go through very upsetting it took me forever. I would like to ask BERRYQ if we could be in contact via email you really explained your story.

To the suffers on this site

I was fighting scabies for awhile spent countless nights awake in tears. I now know this is not scabies so please refer to BERRYQ last insert on this site for his remedy 50/50 vegetable oil and olive oil. Its worth a try to really know if you have scabies or this horrid creature new to us… take care all I know how bad we suffer and want answers.

Scabies made my life miserable. I had to miss exams, tell everyone I had touched to get checked and explain at length what scabies was, spend my life washing linen and clothes, and spend sleepless nights itching and imagining the mites crawling under my skin, making burrows and laying eggs. Then I had post-scabies syndrome for months, and now I have it AGAIN. What has helped me also is taking TEA TREE OIL baths with lots of oil, it disinfects the skin and kills scabies. Scabies made me DEPRESSED, MISERABLE, AND HAUNTS ME ON A DAILY BASIS. I’ll never forget these moments of pain, endless tears, paranoia and HYSTERIA.

a boy was left alone in a house infested with mites and he was taken to hospital with severe scabies which covered his body at the age of four. Now in his mid thirties his body resemble that of some one who received cigarette burns. My question is. Does scabies of a severe nature look like cigarette burn scars taking into account the boy is an adult now?

  75. Darrell says:

I am male, 47, single, from a “clean” family, where my brother and I never had so much as a wart, like other little kids had, on their fingers.

Bought a used bed in Dec 2003, used it for 1.5 yrs without incident. Then moved to a smaller place, May 2005, so used my old twin bed for 2.5 yrs. Moved to current place Nov. 2007 and brought the full size bed out of storage, in my brother’s clean basement, in a brand-new house, into my current residence.

Had no issues from Nov 2007 thru at least Nov 2009. The only public lodging I stayed in was a nice clean hotel in Chicago, Aug 2008.

As of Christmas 2009, still no issues. By Feb 1st, 2010, had a “bite” on right wrist. It went down. Began to have bites on both forearms and both thighs, despite never having been in a hot tub (one reported source of scabies infestations) and being celibate since 1997! So it’s not just a sexually transmitted disease.

For all of Feb and half of March, I thought it was bed bugs, and thus was missing valuable time to treat. After satisfying myself that it was not bedbugs, (which can much more readily be seen than scabies) I went to the doctor, where scabies was diagnosed, (visual only–no scrapings.)

Used a tube of Permethrin on entire body except scalp, a big mistake. Used entire tube, which is really too much.

Continued to see new bites, amid the many slow-fading lesions. Doc prescribed 2nd tube of Permethrin with orders to use only on scalp until at least two wks had elapsed, as its absorption rate can poison a person.

Used on scalp, but never entire body surface. Did use it as a spot treatment on new bites, tho, till it was used up.

For months now, have been taking at least five long baths weekly, before bed, with borax, which is very soothing and leaves one feeling smooth and not oily, net not dry skinned.

Have done more laundry in last 3 months than in past 3 years, it seems. Never using a towel twice, etc. The problem is under control, but not totally eradicated.

A new bite will appear maybe once a week, which I now treat with Tea Tree oil, as the doc won’t prescribe more Permethrin for awhile.

Life is better, but not 100%. My pillow goes in the freezer every morning, to be pulled out at bedtime. Linens are quarantined in an unused room. The fear that it will return is bad. The hiding of one’s forearms with long sleeves in summer is unbearable.

72 hrs ago, wrapped the mattress in 3 layers of clear food wrap, and put fresh linens on. The extra foam rubber cushion helps me not feel the stickiness of a plastic coated mattress thru the mattress pad. (The foam rubber thing had been quarantined the entire time, so was just put back into use after the mattress was wrapped.)

Wish I could be sure the problem was solved. Have also used lice shampoo twice, and would like to move the TV out of the bath zone, back into the living room where it belongs. (I have not spent appreciable time “living” in my living room since Feb 1st.

Failed to get a part time job waiting tables, as I took myself out of consideration, due to the short-sleeve uniform and my unsightly arms.

  76. Jan says:

Hi…my family has been inflicted with scabies twice in 5 years. what I have found is doctors still believe one treatment of elimite kills them. eliminate was invented in the 1950s. these parasites have had over 60 years to evolve and become resistant.

and yes it is sad that doctors are treating us like we are crazy. what i have found that works is slow and steady wins the race. it’s not like head lice where one treatment and washing of bedding and your done….well…that’s if you have boys and can cut hair short. Girls are harder…i know.

first step: get eliminate from your doctor or pediatrician for your family. this decreases their population by about 80%. But you still have them in your skin, deep body fat and environment. don’t plan on getting anymore elimite. most doctors are too afraid to prescribe too much eliminate. a second treatment 10-14 days apart can make you extremely sick and nauseous.

second step: order sulfur soap online. if you can handle it…do the sulfur ointment but unfortunely for my family…we had severe reactions to the ointment and got sulfur burns..we did test spots and waited…within 10 minutes…we were all on fire. Fortunately we had hydrcortisone 10 cream in the house. We rinsed and put it on our test spots. The rash went away within 5 minutes. But the sulfur soap was mild enough we could use it. So just trade out your regular soap for sulfur soap.

third step: cover beds in plastics…furniture too..if you can afford to. You can get plastic at your local hardware store fairly priced (paint section is usally the cheapest) or go to target and get vinyl mattress covers for $10-$20 bucks. you will use alot of duck tape if you go the hardware route. order perethrin 10% (martins) and nylar/precor (some type of growth inhibitor..too keep them from laying more eggs in your environment.) Spray bedframes, carpets, molding, furniture and 3 feet up the walls with it….every other weekend.

fourth step: wash bedding every week using ammonia and borax. Shop around. you can get borax for $3 bucks at target and ammonia for $1.19 at walmart. Also wash all your clothes in it as well. So just replace your wisk/tide with borax detergent and ammonia. No extra money there. Dry everything you can on high heat. Don’t forget to wash pillows in ammonia and borax…dry and cover in plastic. We just used large trash bags for this. cheaper than buying vinyl pillow covers. my kids are older…so I don’t worry about the plastic. Buy be careful if you have young children. Buy the vinyl pillow covers.

sadly, benedryl, neem lotion and hand santizer is the only things that help the itch. Hand santizer will burn if they are trying to get away and burrow in your skin. But just blow or put a fan on your skin…knowing you are killing the suckers. Plus you are keeping out infection from the feces they leave behind.

Additional step: you can rake borax detergent and table salt into your carpet as well. vaccuum up excess…so it doesn’t get on your kids.

In the morning, shower with your sulfur soap. Use hand santizer on your body 40-60% alchohol on body. At night shower with sulfur soap and put neem lotion all over body(3ml-5ml of neem oil to 100 ml of lotion…mix your own). I get non greasy lotion from walgreens for $3 bucks. And ordered neem oil from garden store. Just make sure it is 100% neem oil…with no inert ingredients. Neem lotion kills them too but mostly keeps them from maturing into adults and prevents them for laying more eggs. So the ones that live through the treatment may itch for a couple weeks but will soon die off without reproducing. Put on your pjs on and slip into safe plastic protected bed. Try not to think of it as a bug but just dust mites. It helps. Keep your neem lotion and hand santizer by your night stand. I put both products in disposeable tupperware with lids. So I make enough for all 5 family members to use at their convenience during the night on their night stands. Try to alternate neem lotion and hand santizer…using one too much can make you nauseous.

Lastly, once you know you have the numbers down. order horse paste (100% ivermectin) ($2.50 per tube)and take the amount for your body weight…no more. Do not double and triple doses on any medication. Doing so… on even over the counter medicines can kill you. Be sensible. For yourself and your family. And never give ivermectin to small children. Just keep giving your kids sulfur soap baths. it is safer. My youngest son is 13 but weighs only 95 lbs. So he doesn’t get ivermectin. Plus he doesn’t have alot of body fat for them to hide and bury in. If you feel leery or unsafe in anyway…don’t do without checking with a physician!

Ivermectin always seemed to be the turning point for us. We could actually see our body fat lump up under the skin when the ivermectin was working.

Each time we got them, it took different amounts of time to rid ourselves of it. the first 6 months. the second, two months. It just depends on how long you have had them to begin with.

And dont forget to treat your animals once a week with ivomec, revolution or heartguard. Once a week for 4-6 weeks. And seperate your animals from your kids and indoor environment if you can. Like a garage or spare bathroom. Check with your vet on how to properly treat your pets if you are scared. Ivomec put on a dog who already has heart worms can kill him. So even be safe with your pets. I couldn’t afford a vet…so I called a vet assistant and pleaded for her help. They often times know as much as a vet. And she helped with everything over the phone telling what to buy from the feed store to even the right suringe to use.

Sadly, I have never been the type to clean, clean, clean. But I did buy clorox wipes and put ammonia in a squirt bottle and wipe down keyboards, computers, desk, door knobs, stair rails…basically anything you touch regularly. I also bought and new purse/makeup bag since I touch it daily. I also put all my papers like bills…. in microwave a nuked them 30 seconds to minute just to feel safe. Wiped credit cards with ammonia with paper towels. And soaked all the stuffed toys I could not wash like legos in bleach 10 minutes.

Lastly, try to find the source. hand me down couch, clothes …etc. Also check your garage/attic for mouse droppings or bird nest. and treat your yard in case they are coming from your lawn.

First time, we got them from a friend who breeded dogs. Second time, we had mice in our attic. We also heard baby birds chirping in attic…so we had our vents covered just to be safe.

my boyfriend got them from staying at a friends house, then he came over to my house and he kept itching but he said it was from dry skin. and then i started itching a couple weeks later. i’ve used the permethrin 5% and cleaned everything and got rid of them. & my boyfriend thought he did too, well he didn’t and gave them back to me 🙁 and ever since then i havn’t been able to get rid of them. i’ve used the cream about 5 more times and even covered my body in bleach and bathed in bleached to the point it started burning. i don’t know what to do.

every time i try a new treatment, i wash my bedding, vacuum my floors, mattres, and pillows. i wash all of my clothes and never used dirty towels or anything. i’ve even bought several pairs of new flip flops. i don’t know how to clean the seats of my car. I’m thinking that’s how i keep getting them back. it’s either from my car, or my purse. idk how to clean my purse. i’ve switched back and fourth. but i only have two purses. and they are both leather. idk what to do and after reading some of these other stories, i started crying. i’ve had scabies for about 6 months and don’t know how to get rid of it. 🙁 my boyfriend has now gotten rid of it and REFUSES to see me until i do. it’s been about 3 months since i’ve seen him 🙁 how do i clean them out of my car and my purse?? please help please! 🙁

  78. sufferingwith scabies says:

Got diagnosed with Scabies a little over 2 weeks ago. My doctor prescribed me with Hydroxyzine (pills to relieve the itching), Permetherin .5% cream (kill off the mites), and Verdeso foam (to help ease the itching). Did my first Permetherin treatment last week. Today was a week after my first treatment and I will put on the cream for a second time for my second treatment. I’m worried though because today I noticed some new bumps in an area that did not have bumps.(I assume the worst) so I think they might be active mites since they took so long to appear (after my first treatment of Perm); so does this mean that the first treatment was ineffective in killing off the mites? Or were they eggs that hatched after the first treatment?

And I’ve discovered areas where my rash is with black spots inside the bumps scattered in areas of my arm and leg. What are these? Should I pick them out?

I’m trying to convince my family members to take the cream for treatment but they refuse to listen to me. None of them had direct skin contact with me, but I was “contageous” for the first couple days returning home (from college) before I was diagnosed/getting treated. Are the chances still high for them contracting this? My boyfriend and I had direct skin contact before I was being treated, and he hasn’t shown any signs/symptoms so I just treated him a week after my first treatment.. so I started my second treatment today, and he started his first.. since I waited to treat him, has this increased my risk of becoming reinfested?

I don’t know how many loads of laundry I’ve done. But I plan on (with gloves) washing ALL the clothes I packed in my luggage (as I touched/packed them while I was infected) that I’ve returned home with, and I wash my sheets daily, and vacuum the carpet daily, and couch. I always make sure to wear long clothing and socks around the house to prevent my skin from touching less surfaces. I try to wipe hard surfaces down with disinfecting wipes but I’m not sure if this is enough.

Bumps appeared on my face after I had been diagnosed, and before I did my first Permetherin treatment. Am I allowed to put the Permetherin cream on my face? My doctor had directed for me to put it on the chin down to the feet. Would it be safe to put it on my face? Also my scalp (haven’t felt it been itchy) but should I put the Permetherin on my scalp too?

I am so frustrated. I’m stuck at home cleaning and worrying, I’ve been dealing with this ugly looking rash, I can’t wear my clothes and it’s so beautiful and warm outside. I feel like such a monster always being covered up. I want to see my friends again and want to get rid of this horrible thing.

  79. Jennie says:

My marriage is on the rocks. I am convinced that hubby is delusional about having scabies. That being said, here is our story.

We stayed in a really shabby hotel room about 2 months ago. It was the last room in town and we either could stay there or sleep in the car, since we have a small child, we chose the motel room. We woke early and left to a better one. We washed when we got in and changed our clothes.

A few weeks later hubby starts going on about how he is itching. We have treated the whole family multiple times with the cream from the Dr. (appx. 6 times for hubby, 3 or 4 for me, and 2 for our small daughter) I have not seen any rash or marks on any of us, nor do I itch more than the occasional itch from a hair brushing against my skin or something similar. Its definitely NOT a constant itching, and I have no problems sleeping at night. My daughter IMO also doesn’t scratch more often than normal. (hubby watches her like a hawk) He claims that she is. I have asked friends and family to watch us and there opinion is the same as mine. We have spent time in relatives houses and none of them seem to be infected. We also left our home for 10-12 days ( hubby thinks its 10, I think it was longer) and went from hotel room to hotel room, GOOD ones, Best Western or better types. We never stayed more than 2 days in one, and we used the cream the first night and the last night of our trip. We also bagged our clothes and kept dirty in a dirty bag all tied up, and clean in a clean bag. They never touched any furniture unless we were wearing them. We got a rental car, we also sprayed/vacuumed our house and washed ALL the stuff that could be washed before we left and bagged up anything that would fit into a bag. I got a new cheap purse so that it wouldn’t be contaminated, daughter got a new car seat, we all got new shoes (even though they were leather sandles, hubby insisted that they would get in them).

I am at my wits end. We have seen at least 4 different dr.s one being a dermatologist and another being a wise man who was from Africa and had had many experiences with scabies. They all gave the cream, but I feel as if they were doing it as a just in case.

I have had lice a few times as a kid, and I remember how that itched. I know if it was anything like that I would be going nuts. But its not like that at all. and my body has no marks or anything on it. Neither does my daughter. Hubby keeps thinking he sees some on him, but I don’t see anything that dosent look like where he was scratching and all of it goes away in a few hours at most. Please post your thoughts.

This is how I got rid of Scabies. It’s the cheapest way and the only way I could get rid of them. If you get lazy, you’ll have them for months or years, but if you listen to what I have to say you can be rid of them in about 2-3 weeks. Scabies live a lot longer than 3 days on clothing, don’t believe that one. I had a robe that I hadn’t worn in a month and it re-infected me. It may be the truth about hard surfaces.
The eggs will hatch every 2 ½ days. People say 3 days, but if you listen to that you’ll never get rid of them. You’ll probably notice new bumps 2 ½ days after the first application. That’s when you need to reapply all the creams, etc. You killed the adults, but the eggs were already under the skin. Now you’re killing the new hatchlings. You need to get rid of them before they lay eggs.
I had them for 6 months and never passed them on to my kids or husband. After you’ve had it for a while, you’ll know the difference between a regular itch and a scabies itch. You’ll continue to itch for about a month after they’re all dead, but if you don’t have new bumps, then you’re healed. I re-infected myself twice. Once at the doctor’s office, and again with a robe I didn’t wash.
Shower daily 1-2 times. Use the body wash and shampoo listed below and then cover your body with sulfur lotion. Use all the products at one time. Start the Ivermectin, Permethrin, Sulfur lotion, body wash, and shampoo on the same day. Have no mercy on those little bugs or they’ll ruin your life.
Avoid shaking hands and hugging people. If you give it to them, they’ll give it right back to you. Tell people that you’ve been working out really hard and your muscles are sore, or tell them you might have poison ivy. That will keep them away for about a month.

    Materials List
Raid Spider spray – about $5 a can
Ivermectin – horse wormer 1.87% – about $5 per tube
    Permetherin – Cattle spray 10% – about $10
    Tea Tree Oil Body Wash
Sulfur Soap – Found at herb store.
Sulfur – yellow comes from a flower – buy at herb store for about $6.
    Petroleum Jelly
    Favorite Lotion
Bottle of Tea Tree Oil – Pure is best – $10

Laundry – Wash bedding daily until you’ve not seen new bumps for at least a week. Wear disposable gloves when stripping beds. If you have a heavy comforter, take if off your bed and have it drycleaned or throw it away, because it needs to be washed daily and if it’s too big, the hot water can’t saturate the layers. I guarantee it’s infested with the scabies. Don’t wear anything twice without washing and drying it including coats and robes. I never had the scabies on my feet so I didn’t have to wash my shoes, but it was winter and I wore socks always. Wash clothing in HOT water and dry on HOT. When putting dirty clothing of infected people in the washer, use disposable gloves. You don’t want anymore bugs than you’ve already got. Moving wet clothing to dryer you don’t have to wear gloves because the dryer will kill the bugs. Use a fresh pair of gloves every day. Use a different pair of gloves to pull clothing out of dryer and fold it. If you don’t you will re-infect yourself and spread it to your family. Keep infected people’s soiled clothing away from other family members clothing in garbage bags. That way you don’t have to wear gloves all the time you’re loading the washer. Don’t put dirty clothing in the baskets that you’ll use for clean clothing. You’re re-infecting yet again.
I first caught them on my hands. If that’s the place you know that you have them, then don’t touch your bare skin with your hands and keep sulfur lotion on hands at all times.

Body Lotion – Add Sulfur to body lotion. 1 parts sulfur to 10 parts lotion. Keep this lotion on your body all the time. If you are only infected on your hands, use the lotion everywhere anyway, but put it heavily on your hands and slip a pair of disposable gloves over them. Leave like that as long as you can. If anyone asks, tell them you’re deep moisturizing your hands. It really will do that for you so you’re not lying. You can also rub stinky tea tree oil all over yourself.

Shampoo – Put favorite shampoo in a small bottle and add tea tree oil or sulfur. Mix and use on hair and neck. Tea tree oil will make hair oily, sulfur dries it out. Either works to get rid of bugs.

Spider Spray – Spray everything with this stuff. Scabies are in the spider family. Spray mattresses, car seats, steering wheel, carpet next to bed, purse straps, wallet, favorite chair.

Permetherin – Mix 1 part Permetherin with 1 part petroleum jelly. This mixture is the same as the expensive tubes they prescribe at the doctor’s office. Make sure the original Permetherin was 10%, this makes it 5% when you’re done mixing. Apply this mixture every 2 ½ days. It’s been my experience that the bumps came back every 2 ½ days not every 3 days like the government has on their sites. Preferably at night, it will get all over your clothing. Make sure you wash this off the next morning. You shouldn’t keep this on your body for more than 10 hours.

Scratching – DO NOT SCRATCH, if you do, clean out fingernails and cut them back. You are just spreading the bugs everywhere.

Ivermectin – Only use if you can’t get any relief from anything else. I used the Ivermectin and it made my eyes so sensitive to light for about 24 hrs. that I had to wear sunglasses most of the day. If you go this direction, it does work. Take twice the amount you would give a horse that weighs the same as you do. I would not give to children. Take this every 2 ½ days until there are no more bumps. It took me 4 rounds. I think this was the most effective part of my treatment mixed with the sulfur lotion.

Body Wash – Mix favorite body wash with tea tree oil or use sulfur soap.

***I WOULD NOT GET IVERMECTIN FROM A FEED STORE AND USE IT, A DOCTOR CAN GET YOU AN RX AND IT CAN BE ORDERED OVERSEAS. NEVER TAKE MEDS MADE FOR HORSES OR DOGS***

I have had scabies for 2months. I did 4 weeks of treatment with Permethrin 5% with ZERO improvement in my skin.

This is what worked for me:
20min bath every night with 1 cup Borax / 1 cup Baking Soda
    Sulfur/Vaseline 10% after bath

All of these can be bought at grocery store.

I have it everywhere…chest, back, armpits, arms, groin, legs, feet. After 2 days, I saw healing. Not completely healed yet, but its the first time I’ve seen healing.

    This is the routine:
I washed all clothing, then bagged them and put them away. I only use 2 underwear, 2 sets of socks, 1 change of clothes, 2 sets of PJs (one shirt longsleeve so Vaseline doesnt get on my bedding).

Make a bath with 1 cup Borax, 1 cup Baking soda(it’s good for irritated skin). When I get in bath I hold my nose and ears and get my hair wet in tub. DONT LET THIS BATH WATER GET IN EYES/MOUTH. I turn on water briefly and get it off my face. Next I wash my hair with sulfur shampoo, put in pony tail for 5min, then rinse in tub. I have exfoliating mits and I GENTLY wash my whole body with the sulfur soap/shampoo. Stay in tub total of 20min(I have stopwatch). Make sure your whole body gets soaked.
Then I empty tub and take shower. Put conditioner in my hair and wash briefly with normal soap.
Put on sulfur ointment EVERYWHERE, be careful eyes/mouth duhhhh.
Leave on ointment until next bath treatment.
Borax is awesome, look it up on wikapedia…I have been washing my clothes in it, dishes, and cleaning with it also.

I have been sleeping on a inflatable bed and putting bedding in dryer for 10min before AND after I sleep on it. GOOD LUCK AND DON’T GIVE UP!!!

I have a very long story about my family’s scabies incident. I am happy that I was able to find a non invasive or chemically harsh treatment that worked so well we have not had an episode of it for the past 2 years and i believe that if you follow the natural scabies remedy we found, rather than trying those harsh chemicals you will find relief.

  84. barryg says:

My last post was July 2009. I am not 100% clear but are doing pretty good these days. I think another few months and I will be on cloud 9.
I am now healthier than I have been in years too.

I want to share with you my secret. I reckon I know how these critters work. My theory is these microscopic critters build there homes from tiny cotton fibers they harvest from your clothes, so a tight clothing will help them flourish. hence these colored fibers. Now note they can’t use polyester, I wear polyester as much as possible. They use our skins own natural enzymes glues the fibers together and build a nest. when they go out to harvest they go to the skin surface, and this explains the itching and sharp pin like pains when they burrow through the skin, or when an egg is extruded. Our skin produces salt and the bodies own defense will be to surround the parasite in some crystals, they can live in these gritty crystals.

Ok so now here is what is working for me.
I take slow hot shower to open up the skin pores and gently massage the problem areas. next use a mild shower gel, we don’t want something too strong as it will start to destroy our skins own oils. Rinse off proper. Now your skin will be ready. I use a mixture of cooking oil and olive oil about 50/50, I put it in a spray bottle ready or use it last me about a week. If you want add a few drop eucalyptus or tea tree oil drops its even better olive oil is smelly so a little flavor will make it smell nice too. So while wet apply the oil all over your body hair ears every wear. The critters like creasy areas of your body, you will know what I mean like butt, behind ears in ears, elbows behind knees, breast creases. Massage the oil in, be gentle and take about 5 minutes. Now use a small towel and dry your self all over, be gentle and try not to scrub. Now spend another five minutes to continue massage with your hands and you will start to feel the grit coming out of your skin, collect the grit and rinse it down the skin with little running water. I then rinse out and clean the shower ready for next time. In my room I use a hair drier just to evaporate any surface water. I wait a little time and sense some movement in areas I just rub a little to bring the grit to the surface and just wipe it on a little toilet tissue , which I flush away later.

I have been doing this for about a month and have almost 99% shifted them from body. I can sleep good at night and sometimes when I feeling the crawling sensations at night I spray a little of my mixture and massage. It seems the oils penetrates the skin enough to loosen the glue so the crystals can’t stick.

Now for my eye lids, ears and nose areas I use simple Vaseline petroleum jelly use a pure one so as not to irritate the skin, I feel them pop out sometimes, so wipe with a tissue, and massage a little more . I know these things can even jump because at night I have felts the sensations on my skin. Whenever I feel activity I oil up again, then wash and oil up again. The oil does dry my skin out. so once a week I use a proper skin moisturizer after I have dried off.

I shower twice per day, as soon as I come home from work my clothes go straight into the washing m/c for a maximum wash cycle, mine goes to about 85c. I don’t boil wash any more. don’t forget wash bedding daily. I do one wash cycle per day.

Listen these things will migrate to safe areas like under finger nails and toes, lips and even into your mouth. I know it’s happened to me. For my scalp, I use the oil but rub a tea spoon of vinegar, it smells for a little while but clears quite quickly so I don’t end up smelling like a chip shop at work.

~The final things to note you may notice whenever you touch things like opening a door, pushing a door with fingers, pressing keypad. There will be sharp pin like pains. There are two types to look for. One is a fast prick exit type and pain clears quickly. The second is a sharp prick followed by long burrowing type pain. For the second type I quickly apply the vinegar and rub the oil in. Then I just spray clean object I touched. When I handle food I wear disposable vinyl gloves. I never eat food with my hands. These bugs sense heat, moisture. You know whenever I started washing the dishes, the running water in the sink, was enough to give me crawly sensations on my face and hands. Even making the tea, the hot water steam was enough to excite them. Since I have been doing the oil routine they have stopped almost so ?I know it is working for me. I know its going to take many months and have been battling this for a few years now. I tried to rush and found they just hibernate, So I ended up damaging my skin. take it easy protect your skin and slowly exfoliate these things out, once you got me moving rub the oil in so they can slip out and get smothered. No need to over oil up as you just end up staining all your clothes, bedding, and feeling uncomfortable.

We are up against some tough creatures here. Oh yeah I found when I used strong things like sulfur or lice shampoos, the movement instantly stopped, makes you feel as if your cured. BUT as soon as the chemical wears off they come out again. If what some the texts out there suggest these creatures in there cocoons can survive for years. I daily vacuum my living area. Lastly to fight from within, I eat a boiled egg sandwich 4 or 5 times per week, daily one orange and one banana. I Always take one greens and carrots with my main meals. To keep the healthy vitamins in my system. Sadly I do smoke but I know I will be even healthier when I stop. You know this healthy food diet my eye site has stopped detraining, I wear specs and things got to the point I could not read the print on the computer screen with out changing specs. Now I am back to my original specs which I have had for the past 20 years and can read the print with the same specs.

Finally I keep a brush in your car and brush the gear stick, steering wheel, seats before you get in so no new ones will latch onto your clothes or skin. My work area and chair I brush off too.

We tried all the home remedies and potions. after a few months we noticed intense itching and mite bites in patches all over are bodies. So unbearable we could not sleep. We tried all the human medications. And nothing seems to get rid of the mites.

The medicine we purchased for our dog we noticed he has not been itching and sleeps through the night. He is not fully recovered from mites but the lotion is working.. we decided to use it on ourselves.. I am telling you this dog mange medicine got rid of the intense itching and the bumps and rashes were hardly noticeable the next day..Its called nu-stock…

I got mine tube off ebay.. I believe this dog mange medicine gets rid of all kinds of mites..If you want relief from scabie mites. I would go with this nu-stock..best relief I have gotten since we caught mites.. We are now able to sleep at night…Hopefully once the dog is fully cured we will be too…

After my fourth dose of the Permethrin, insane cleaning rituals and constant sadness and anxiety, I have become completely fed up. My scars aren’t getting any more tolerable, so I said “screw it, I’m going to burn them.”

I know this sounds barbaric, but the oils and soaks and soaps just aren’t cutting it. Every time I light up a cigarette, I hold the tip as close to the burrow as possible without touching it. OMG so painful, but nothing compared to the itching and shame.

After that, I put several coats of Sally Hansen Hard as Nails clear nail polish over the burrow areas.
    Guess what? Good-freaking-bye, scabies.

I don’t recommend it, but I know you’re all sitting out there, frantic and worried, searching for answers and solutions like I was and will continue to. Bless you all, I wish you the best.

Now maybe I can hold the man I love, as I have not laid a finger on him for months for fear of giving it to him.

  88. alex says:

    Heidi,

My boyfriend did the same thing. He wore his coat when it hadn’t been washed and we still had scabies after that. But there could be many reasons why we still had it. To be safe repeat the whole process again if your family is still experiencing the rash. I’ve done it too many times to count and I understand how much you don’t want to do it again, but it is inevitable.

  89. the paranoia is the worst part says:

I had a friend spend a week sleeping in my day bed, which is like a couch for me and my boyfriend, because it is in the living room. When he was here I noticed he had this weird rash and when I asked about it he said it was poison sumack (don’t know the spelling). We didn’t think much of it. He left (we didn’t change the sheets he slept in) and a few weeks later my boy friend and I noticed we were itching like mad. We had red bumps every where: genitals, armpits, hips, you name it. We sprayed for bed bugs, but then were diagnosed with scabies soon after.

    This is what we did.

Before you apply the lotion prescribed by your doctor to treat scabies:

1.) Wear rubber gloves. Place all of your laundry into lastic bags. And I mean all of it. Every thing you touched and walked on. This means- bathroom mats, towels, shoes, oven mitts, pillows, comforters, hats, gloves, coats, EVERY THING. Systematically wash the clothes you want to wear first, because it will take a long time to wash all of your laundry. Change your plastic gloves every time you decide to touch a clean batch of clothes, when you’ve been touching scabies clothes. When the clothes are clean keep them in clean plastic bags until you finish the process of cleaning your house to prepare for the night you apply the lotion. I suggest doing this a few days before the lotion is applied.

2.) Wash your comforter, sheets, and pillow cases before you sleep in it with the lotion on. Also cover your mattress and pillows in a vinel wrap with a zipper closure. Scabies can live inside your mattress and pillows.

3.) Vacuum your whole house. Throw away the bag or rise the canister in hot water.

4.) Disinfect your entire bathroom. Wash the floors, tub, toilet, shower what ever, with something that cleans hard. Do the same for the kitchen.

5.) Anything you can’t wash, put in a plastic bag, or somewhere you aren’t going to touch it for a long time. Some say 48-72 hours but with my paranoia I haven’t touched some things for weeks.

    Applying the lotion:

1.) Take a shower. Use clean towels.
2.) Apply the lotion. When applying be sure to get the lotion on every part of the body including: under the fingernails, in the hair line (all up in it), the belly button, anus, skin folds of the genitals.
3.) Put on clean clothes (socks recommended) and sleep in a clean bed. Wear the lotion for the maximum time.

    After the hours have passed:

1.) Take off the clothes you wore to bed and place them in a plastic bag for washing. Do the same for the bedding. If you put the cover over the pillows and mattress you only need to wash the blankets, sheets, and pillow cases.
2.) Wash off the lotion and put on clean clothes.
3.) Clean your entire house like you did before the lotion was applied.

I found it nice to take a hot bath, and then slowly put cool water into it to sooth itching.

We started trying to cure scabies on January 1st and it is March 19th, and I’m still unsure if I am safe. I haven’t slept in my own bed since this has happened to me for the fear of infecting my family. So I sleep at my boyfriends place. I used Lindane lotion twice and permethrin cream twice. I still have post-scabies marks and I am trying to stay optimistic about being scabies free. But I am not convinced, and I don’t think I will be until my body stops tingling and itching and the marks go away. This is the most horrific and painful experience of my life. And I am not friends with that kid I let sleep on my couch anymore because of this. This mite will bring you to insanity more then once.

  92. Kathy says:

There seems to be quite a few people asking where/how you can get the mites. Honestly all you need to get is one on you. Bad news is that it could be from anywhere. If you try on clothes that someone tried on before you and you pick up one. As they are small enough to walk through the weave of the majority of clothing, it could have been from sitting down on a train seat. This is not meant to scare anyone. But is meant to be an eye opener. Just as with any bug some people will be more likely to end up getting them from just say one, and then some people are naturally resistant and will never get them.

Getting them does not mean you are dirty, just unlucky. From the date you notice them you could have been infected for as long as 2 months prior or as little as 2 weeks. The time I got them it took about a year to get it all sorted. If I managed to get them again I would get all the creams etc together and go on vacation for 2 weeks so i wouldn’t have to have to clean everything for those 2 weeks. The mites will die off in about 7 days but to make sure I would go for the full 2 weeks. Make sure its to a nice hotel that gets extra stars for cleanliness. I have known people who do this and get their lives back to normal once they come back. If you decide to do this make sure to plan out very well how you will make sure your baggage will be scabie free when you take it down, as you can wear the cream while traveling.

a few things to remember: From my understanding freezing things for 12- 14hrs still kills the mites and eggs. If you have a freezer, use it. So when you get yourself home from where ever, make sure to put anything you want to use the next day in the freezer. Include: Jackets, SHOES, work clothes etc that cannot be washed day in/out. Bag the stuff you don’t want to or cant wash. Put the bag off to the side for 2 weeks to make sure that the scabies have died. Use an iron with steam (when you can) on the bed and all furniture before you use the scabie sprays as it will help kill whatever is living there.

DO NOT USE an iron on anything that has MEMORY foam in it as it will probably damage it. As scabies are microscopic you can use regular large plastic garbage bags (taped together with) on your bed under your sheets as an inexpensive mattress cover. This will help keep the scabies from moving back from the mattress and through the sheets onto you. Remember scabies are tiny and can be on something as small as a hair. So make sure you are aware of where you touch or what can be touching you in your home.

And worst thing is that most doctors etc are not going to be anything near sympathetic.

    Good luck everyone

To anyone with scabies………….Please Listen to me, go to the food store right now and get yourself some tea tree oil . Make sure you get 100% not 20%. Scrath all the areas for the last time and apply the oil with a dropper, sit back and relax, your on your way to a scabie free life- I did not relize that I was living with this for so long.(1 year) I thought iI just had dry skin.

The tea tree oil will kill the mites, you should also take a bath in epson salt for 20 min.(3 times a week) You should always see your doctor but this is a safe way to rid the critters, I also went to the nature store and bought NEEM oil which kills the mites. Good Luck and I hope this helps you. You should also put 20 drops into the bath tub and bathe in this mixture for a couple of weeks it will soak into every pore on your body and rid the mites.

after doin 2 mnths of research online to only find out that it was scabies. i finally took my 2yr old n myself to the e.r after being so overwhelmed n fed up with the itching n spreading every night. they prescribed the permethrin 5% cream. after showering my family applied it the same night.my husband slept but me n my son was up all night still itching.i had to giv him some meds to make him go to sleep, i knew he was suffering from the itching n as a mother i cant take seeing that. idk if the cream was suppose to make me feel like that bt my whole body was BURNING!

y do the doctors prescribe you a med that only has the same side effects as wut yur trying to get rid of ?!. i knew that the cream would cause itching, burning, redness etc. but the pain was so intense from the burning. the burning only made me want to itch more n the more i itched the redness n swelling came with it. the doc said to use the cream for one night n then if needed to repeat 2-3 days later.from that experience i feel like the cream was working bt it was so intense it makes me not want to use it again..i used the cream thursday.today is saturday, my family isnt itching as much bt seems to be breaking out more n finding more bites everywhere…..does this mean that i still have live mites eating us up ?!….

or are we having a reaction to the cream ?…. should i use the cream a few days in a row ?… i have been washing everything, vacuuming, spraying, i even got rid of my 2 dogs because of being paranoid. after reading hundreds of comments i feel like im never going to get rid of this..this has been going on for about 2-3 mnths.i just cant imagine fighting this for more mnths or even years………… please somebody help me…………

i also want to add that soaking in the tub with hot water (hot as you can stand) using the oatmeal baths help sooth n mild the itching, i use it for my son. or you can use baking soda/ or cornstarch n soak for approx 30 minutes (or longer), it takes the itching away for about several hrs….

I have had scabies three times within the past two years and each time I’ve contracted it from trying on clothes at the mall, specifically American Eagle and Express. The first time I got it was miserable and I had no idea why my skin was itching for three months straight. The second two times however my skin didn’t itch at all and the burrows were strictly limited to my legs. Are certain people more susceptible to scabies? I mean I am a very hygienic person as I’m sure everyone else is. What is with these parasites!!

  98. Peter says:

This was pretty easy to clear up for me. I think there’s a lot of mis-information and scare mongering on here. Don’t get me wrong, having these mites was hell for me, but once positively identified progress has been brilliant.

I’m a guy in my mid twenties. I cleaned my house, but just my room would have sufficed, and I’ve been changing my bedsheets every 3 days. I used the 5% permethrin cream which you can pick up without prescription in the uk. Since then the itching has gone down so much I can get a good nights sleep and my skin is improving everyday.

Of course, I’m still itching a bit, and a few new red bumps are forming but this is a natural post-scabies reaction. To be safe I’ve been applying tea tree cream I got from Holland & Barrett which seems to not only do my skin a lot of good, but it soothes and helps the itching stop. I will apply the permethrin skin again when a week has gone by since the initial application, again to be sure. I have also been drinking a bit of sulfur (completely safe) each day and taking flaxseed oil (again from Holland & Barrett) but I think all of this was actually unnecessary.

I find really hot showers to feel so nice while I’ve had this!

Back again. It has now been 7 months. Bleach bath for my husband did not end up working. We have now run clean out of ideas. We are out of permethrin cream – we went through 3 of those. Last round of Stromectil did nothing. We have tried showering with lice shampoo. Doesn’t seem to do anything at all. Still using Neem and Tea Tree Oil (soaps this time). Still washing washing washing…spraying things with lice spray that has permethrin in it. I come back here hoping against hope that someone has found a “cure” but I can see that some people get cured with permehtrin the first time around and some of us seem to have bugs with immunities. This is really taxing. I TRULY WISH a dermatologist would read this site and give advice.

Whole family has scabies…First week in December, I took in a mother and her two grown daughters (15, 18) for a few days as they had no electical power in their home. On the 2nd and last day of their stay I overheard them talk about a parasite that was making them itch like mad…I walked into my bedroom and asked why they hadn’t disclosed this to me. The mother brushed it off as being simple flea bites. Of course I was furious, and no longer wanted them in my home. These ladies appeared clean and hygienic. WRONG! They did not bathe during those two days, even though I provided every possible bath luxury. Combined, these women weighed a whopping 927 lbs…sleeping on MY king size bad, and lounging on my sectional sofa. T

hat is a tremendous amount of filth and parasite, not a normal situation…A few days after that, she called & said that she had finally seen a dr and was now being treated for flea bites and needed to borrow money to purchase the meds. I asked her wht medicines she was given, and of course thinking I wouldnt know wht they were for, she ticked off the list….permethrin, cortisone and ivermectin pills…I really really HATE her for knowingly bringing this infestation to my home and family. I have watched my 18 month old granddaughter scream in pain from the itching from the scabies that covered her little body from head to toe…last week I spent 300.00 professionally cleaning my sofa and two mattresses.

Her pediatrician advised me to do another cleaning in 5 days, another 300 bucks. I am seriously thinking of just throwing them away. Yesterday morning is now the worst…As I brushed my teeth, I noticed my lips felt VERY chapped, dry and felt leather like, I looked closer in the mirror and I noticed bumps all along my lipline and all over my chin and above my lips as well. I cannot begin to tell you how this feels, I am sick to my stomach (can these buggers live inside the body????)

I don’t want to eat and just dont know if its possible that scabies is now on my face n lips…I did not have a bad outbreak on my body other than on my right foot which btw has been numb for two weeks now…PLEASE someone tell me what I can do to treat my face and about the numbness on my right foot…I have followed the 2 treatments with permethrin. I have everyone’s posts and I cannot fathom suffering this agony for another month. My prayers are with you who suffer this infestation..

This was funny at the time-
My mate Ben got scabies really bad.He couldnt get rid of them. But in the last week he texted me saying “Right now i love having scabies, when i itch, its like the best scratch ive given myself! It feels so good!”
    I couldnt stop laughing.

  106. buggered up says:

I am back. Still have them. Husband now has them, too. I did a second round of Stromectal…he did his first. Permethrin is not working although we keep trying.

We only get so far with trying literally everything everyone has recommended here. Nothing, I mean nothing, is getting rid of them completely. I am down to having a few patches but they never go away completely no matter what I do. As you can see from my past posts, I have tried everything here except the bleach bath which scares me. But my husband is off right now to do that. I have had many allergic reactions to things I have tried …

I will say that Bactine continues to help a great deal to stop the itching and make those nasty spots go away. I thought it might also actually be killing them… but now I don’t think so. I don’t get the burrows anymore but I have many bites.

The doctor is stumped. Today, I will go and buy ANOTHER whole new set of bedding so that I can wash my bedding every single day. I have SO MUCH laundry to do now and it takes 2-3 loads to wash all my bedding that I need to have yet another set (I have 2 already). I cannot keep up with the laundry. (Hot water-every stitch of clothing we wear every day—-long hot dryer, too).

Although some of you say you regret reading the posts from those of us who cannot get rid of this-you NEEDTO KNOW IT – because I will tell you, the doctors will treat you like you are insane. Most will tell you that you have bedbugs because (as they quote to me) “we see A LOT of that.”

My husband and I and the rest of my family who all live in different states have been to many doctors. There are no more answers and I end up resorting to whatever I can find. I got sulfur cream on the Internet. Didn’t work. My sister tried All-Stop. Didn’t work. My brother tireds Dermasil or something…he still has it. We have ALL done stromectal, permethrin, too.

I’ll see how the bleach bath goes for my hubby. I am very worried about doing that but I am so full of pestisides at this point-what’s another chemical??? (yeah, right)

  107. scabied_up says:

I haven’t been formally diagnosed with scabies but I do believe I have them. My sisters family had them years ago and I have all the signs including my children who have time between myself and my ex (separate houses) – and her boyfriends children have itching. On the ankles, wrists, butt, hips.. So I’ve read about the home remedy treatments on the internet including what people have done on this site. I’ve learned that doctors will usually prescribe permethrin which will contain 5 percent to kill scabies. It’s the same pesticide that is used for lice but in lice it’s around 2 percent that is used (or maybe 1 percent).

Apparently the scabie mite is becoming progressively resistant to permethrin? That had me concerned – as in I’m helping create a super bug that’s resistant to thermonuclear war. There’s also lindane that has been linked to a number of deaths so I’m definitely staying away from that. Then there’s also Ivermectin which is a dewormer for horses but I’ve read that it works for scabies except that I guess there have been no clinical studies or tests. It’s also something that you ingest and that can be scary. I would be very cool if it did work for sure because it would be a 100 percent coverage treatment. But I think someone in this forum had said it kills only the adult mites and the eggs remain safe from it until hatched. Of course there’s all the washing of bedding, carpets, car interiors, keyboards etc. and using permethrin spray on places you can’t wash

. The thing I used was neem seed oil mixed with tea tree oil and olive oil. The olive oil is basically for moisturizing (or maybe to disquise the torrent smell of the neem seed). Tea tree is some sort of a “—-cide” type of oil but it won’t kill the scabie mite. I hear it’s mostly for the itching – which can be good because you don’t want to scratch and spread these things. Supposedly the neem oil is the one that actually kills the mites and they don’t become resistant to it either. I’m still applying the treatment so I can’t say for sure if it works but I think it is. I basically did 1 oz of neem with 2 oz of tea tree and filled the rest of an 8 oz bottle with olive oil – from the beauty section. I’ve also heard that 10 percent sulpher is another cure and has been used for thousands of years or at least a couple of thousand. Anymore than 10 percent and I think your body is going to react pretty bad to it. I read on this forum about how people would use it and feel the worst feeling because they figured the mite was doing its last hurrah and dying in a fit of rage – digging a path of destruction – but dying. I used it from head to toe and after 3 hours, I had that feeling too but it was everywhere.

I don’t think I have the mites everywhere. I couldn’t take it any longer and I had to shower and wash it off. I could feel that it was actually burning me. My more sensitive parts of skin like my stomach were red and it burned when the water was hitting it. It felt like the water was causing a bit of a chemical reaction. Since then I’ve used it only in some areas like my ankes where it didn’t bother me. It’s a sulpher cream that has 10 percent sulpher. It’s the least expensive of possible solutions and supposedly safe even for pregant women but don’t take my word for it. Please do research. But in my experience I don’t think the feeling is because the mites are dying and burrowing like mad…I think it’s the reaction of the skin to sulpher –

just an opinion though. It problaby kills them but over time. I also bought this stuff from “all stop” and have no idea if it’s working at all. It’s a company on the internet that claims this stuff will kill the scabies with natural components. For all I know they rebottled windex and called it mitactin skin spray. Not trying to put the company down…just haven’t heard any others talk about it so it’s purely me testing it out on my own. I started treating this about 6 days ago with these different items and kind of alternating between them (neem oil mixture, sulpher ointment, and the all stop stuff). Just wanted to give my own experience so far.

  108. Heather says:

My son has had a rash for 2 months and he lives in a place that is not that clean. He has been staying at my house to help clear up the possible scabies that he has and hopefully we will not get it too. He has been told it is scabies and that it is not scabies and will finally get to see a dermatologist at the end of January and hopefully a correct diagnosis – completely stupid. This is what is working so far.

The whole family needs to do this at the same time – even if they are not itching and have no signs. It takes up to 6 weeks to show signs of scabies.

The Permethrin cream needs to be applied all over your body. The bottom of your feet and hands, on and under the toe nails and finger nails, in every crack and orifice of the body including the genitals and belly button and up to the hair line. This needs to be done before bed and then go to sleep and wash off after 10 to 12 hours. It is best to take a prescription meds at night that will knock you out and take care of the itching. Your dr will know what to prescribe. They are so strong that my son will sleep for 12 hours and he weights 200 lbs. This will need to be repeated every 7 days or so they say. He is going to do it every 3 days. There is no point in using the cream unless this way as it will only kill the mites that it touches.

Don’t use this cream everyday. It is better to kill the mites as they lay their eggs every week then to have them become resistant to the cream.

Every morning he takes a salt water bath – about 1/2 to 1 cup to a full bathtub. He soaks for 15 minutes, quick shower and then applies vaseline. This has really helped. His sores are virtually gone. The salt water cleans the wounds and helps to stop infection. The vaseline is great for moisturizing and I believe does not allow the mites to get oxygen. It has really helped with the itching. Then you need to take Benedryl all day long as needed to help with the itching. Stopping the itching will help to prevent open sores and infections and is very important.

The term the 7 year itch came from Scabies. The itching can continue for a long time (even years) after the mites are gone. That is why it is so important to keep treating the itching with the salt water, vaseline, Benadryl or whatever anti itch stuff works for you. The itching is an allergy to the dead mites and eggs that are left under the skin

We are doing all the cleaning stuff that has been discussed as well and if needed will work on some of the other suggestions. But what he is doing seems to be really improving things, especially the itching.

  109. tiredoftheitch says:

This is the second time around for me. Last time, I simply read. this time I will respond. I have a theory that the people you sleep with/live with who apparently don’t get them from you are simply just not allergic to them. I think they do have them, just aren’t itchy because they aren’t having an allergic reaction.

Last time, the lice shampoo thing worked. This time, no such luck. I have gone to putting bleach in the bath as well as tea tree oil in the bath and on my spots. By the way… it burns on the sores… so be prepared for that. I doubt pure bleach on an open sore would burn any less than the tea tree oil does. I also use olive oil at night. I tried the ivermectin horse paste, and it didn’t seem to do anything for me. I can’t find neem oil anywhere locally. I also did not find sulpher soap locally , I suppose I will have to order them online.

The bleach does knock them back. I think one almost needs an internal and external combined method to get rid of the hard cases… They only live in the skin to lay eggs and as youngsters… they mate out on the surface. I’m thinking, if she lays an egg a day, they are going to hatch out daily! So the “putting the cream on once and then a week later” stuff may not catch all the things. I sure am leery of using pesticides very much… I already had breast cancer 3 years ago. I don’t care to go through anything else like that again.

Hello. I’ve had Scabies for a couple months now and I’ve applied 5% peremethin 3 times now. The 3rd time was a few days ago, so I’m still a bit itchy. It might help to know that heat will increase activity in the mites, so the itching will become more intense. I noticed that this was true after I went on a run, and when I got back I was the itchiest I’ve been since I got the infection.

Unless you will be exposing yourself to intense heat for longer periods of time (hot tub, sauna, etc), try not to increase your body temperature by too much, as this will make the itching worse. Take colder showers than usual and don’t do super intense workouts/runs/etc.

When I first visited the doctor, I was prescribed an antihistamine for the post-effects of using the cream. The pills worked well, so too ease the itching, it is a good idea to get antihistamines (eg Benadryl).

I am back for what is now my regular ‘check-in” update. I am NOT over this yet. I got this in late July and started seeing bites mid-august. I have used permethrin, stromectal, sulfur cream, neem, tea tree oil. I wash absolutely everything I touch and wear in hot water daily. I have been to three doctors – one was a dermatologist.

I have even tried contacting the CDC to find out if there is a new epidemic of treatment resistant scabies because as I said before, my sister, brother and brother in law all have this and we all live in different states but visited my mother at a nursing home all at the same time. (John in So-Cal: I got this is So-Cal-have you tried contacting the health department?). And, my whole family that has this is experiencing the same thing as me.

Like some of you others-I started trying to figure out if I am reinfecting myself somehow. I sprayed my shoes, my car, my sofa where I sit often, my office chair (with that lice spray). I washed every throw blanket and never use the same one twice.

I am completely out of ideas and I wish we could get some doctors over to this board to read our experiences. We need a health department or someone to help us figure out why these things are not responding to treatment. I get better for a little while, then they come back slowly.

I was hoping to see new ideas here tonight…

I sympathise with all suffering from scabies.

I live in Fiji and out here scabies is very common. Anyways when i was diagnosed with scabies I had very itchy bumps on my elbows which started spreading to my fingers, wrist and finally the whole body. It was a nightmare! I spent sleepless nights itching and itching. I was asked to apply Permethrin 5% once a week and also treat my family-my husband and my 2 kids. The cream helped in killing the mites but has made my hands numb. I am also experiencing very severe joint/muscle aches which leaves me paralyzed for hours. My fingers and my ankes are swollen. I was prescribed Dolaren for this.

For my scabies I started using neem oil regularly. These natural remedies take time but boy do they help. I would apply neem oil with turmeric at night before sleeping and apply calamine lotion during the day. The calamine would cool my rashes and make it less itchy. I would also boil a lot of neem leaves in plenty of water till the water looks nice and green. Cool the water and have a bath with it. This helped a lot. I would wash our pillow covers, bed sheets, towels, clothes with boiling hot water every alternate day which helped in killing the mites. I would also apply neem oil on my kids(even though they didnt get it)after bath just to be on the safe side. USE A LOT OF NEEM!!!

Here we don’t get TRIPHALA but if one cn get hold of it it would help in clearing scabies. Do try it. Good luck to all. Its been a month since I was diagnosed with scabies and I am already feeling 99% better. The joint aches are still there and the docs are looking into that. They say it could be reactive arthritis. I am hoping the docs can treat me soon cz the pains are agonizing

Here is my experience with scabies. I won’t say where i caught it but i’m pretty sure it was from an infected bed. I noticed intense itching around my groin and scrotum. My hands got blistered and itchy. Itchiness would be in attacks the groin itching was nightmarish almost scratched a ball loose. Got diagnosed by a good doctor, thank you God and to all intelligent medical professionals. Doctors don’t fall into a paradigm on this.

These parasites are coming back and like every other problem are becoming resistant to the standard treatments. That being said people please don’t burn yourselves with full strength off the shelf bleach. I thought i was cured 10 months ago, alas nothing is so easy in life is it we are in a constant struggle as mortals. Been noticing itchiness on my face and scalp for a couple weeks around the nose and have dry skin patches on my face which happened with the first “infestation”. Theres a word that helps stigmatize this problem. So now this has to become a hobby as to how else can i/we get rid of these little c#!#!@#@#@s. I think the 20 mule team borax will help with the laundry it is a salt and should dry them out, took my first bath with it tonight.

Re infestation is everything with these things. Going to look for sulfur based products to try as well. I think the standard line that scabies only survive 72hours away from a human host is completely false and needs to be removed from any medical texts. Shoes and workboots are my next target. Thanks for the freezing the shoes advice up there. Going to sprinkle borax on everything, bed, pillow, carpet. For those of you trying to treat yourselves without permethrin and are not pregnant, don’t! You need to give them one thorough but kicking in my opinion to get them on the ropes then you need to keep poisoning them in any way possible but try not to poison yourself in the process please take care of your skin and don’t burn it off. And when you put the cream on don’t be scared put it in every nook and cranny you can find, in your nostrils, eyelids, earcanals everywhere, I definately feel more attention should be focused on the head area. These are parasites and they haven’t been reading the latest medical journals about what says should kill them.

after taking a shower and putting on the Listereen with a cotton ball, I noticed a small speck on the cotton ball. I got my reading glasses and a magnifying glass and saw something that looked like it had legs. I watched it for about 5 minutes and saw it borrow into the cotton ball. I had my wife look at at and she could see that it was moving deeper into the cotton ball.

She touched it and it starting moving more. I read that the female is larger than the male and can sometimes be visible without a microscope. So it looks like I still have actives mites after 3 treatments of the perm-cream. This sucks. My legs have been burning, but that might be better that itching. I have an appointment with the dermatologist next week.

The doctor that treated me said you can’t seen them with the naked eye. Bull! We that have been suffering with this have more experience than most doctors. We need to keep sharing our experience to help others deal with this problem. I sent a photo in but it’s not very clear. Hope to get better pictures to show the massive sores that developed from too much scratching.

  120. buggered up says:

I am back and finally getting better after seeing 4 doctors. My sister had a biopsy done (no not a scraping) and FINALLY got the absolute diagnosis. By this time, we were both covered compelety with not only scabies bites but also what I think is a secondary infection. We were both prescribed a pill this time. It is working for me but not for her. I also used Bactine and oh my gosh, that cleared about about 25% of it literally over night. (The rash, that is). The doc gave me cortizone creams as well. I had the chills, and I was beginning to get foggy and disoriented from how bad it got.

I have to disagree with CWL somewhat. The permethrin does not always work. I used it 3 times—and believe me, I got every spec of my body.

The doctors kept looking between my fingers-I only got 1 bite there. I had them on my stomach, and all around my back and between my shoulder blades and a few on my chest. I had the big ones and the small ones. The two different types of bites had the doctors baffled – as if they have never seen this before. My GP yelled at me and sent me off with no help. (Yes, I got a new one).

I had a terrible ordeal (and so did my sister) with getting doctors to do any scraping or test of any kind. They all thought they knew what they were talking about. Between us my sister and I saw 7 different doctors – all with different answers. Two of them were dermatologists who told us not to worry. In the mean time here we are potentially infecting everyone we come into contact with. I have had this almost 3 months now so you can imagine!

The biggest deal about this is my mother in the nursing home – who has suffered with some mysterious rash for months on end. Getting them to do a scraping has been difficult but we are finally on the right path. I’m actually grateful I got this because it will help my sweet mother.

I will come back when I think I am 100% recovered.

I had an itch inside my leg near the ankle bone. I scratched and it got bigger and bloody. Didn’t think much of it. Now a few months later my legs seem to explode with red dots and grew fast. I went to the doctor who said it was scabies. Got Permethrin and treated them that night. I’ve taken 3 treatments so far a week apart. Also using citrus listereen in a genaric brand after showering with sulfer soap. After the listereen drys I put on a heavy coat of Tea Tree Oil. I’ also putting on Neem leaf and oil lotion for the dryness.I have red blotchy sores all over my legs and some on my arms. I also started treating them from the inside out. Garlic, Zymex 2, from my homeopathic dr.
which is a parasite killer. I’m using some detox pills from the health food store.

Trying to drink more water with fresh lemon juice. I’ve read that 50% of the population has some type of parasite, so getting the ones inside eliminated will help rebuild the bodies immunity. I’m washig clothes, sheets and towels everyday in hot water, borax, oxyclean and some bleach.Wiping down surfaces and steam cleaning furniture and carpets. I just got some orange oil to put a few drops on the bed. Someone mentioned somewhere that it helps to keep them off the bedding? Iplan on using some orange oil cleaner too.

Any way, getting to my question. After I put on the Tea Tree Oil today, I noticed quite a few black dots in the sores. I looked through magnifying glasses but could not tell if they were mites. I think they are. I dug a few out but couldn’t see any legs. Guess I need a microscope. Has anyone noticed these? Where I saw them was on the sores which are not swollen up like the used to be. for a while I was having a light yellow liquid oozing out of the sores which has pretty much stopped now. I never saw any black dots when the sores were swollen. So are they dead mites?

I began itching by late June (roughly 4 months ago)…i had gone to 3 walk-in clinics and met with 3 doctors, that all had a different thought on what my rash was. So i was refferred to a dermotologist. Right away he told me he thought i had scabies. For months i thought i had a simple rash when not knowingly i was actually the source of food and survival for these discusting little mites. Embarassing enough my boyfriend developed the rash and soon enough everyone around me found out about it. I have taking the ‘Nix’ cream 2 times, without it working. I am on my third time in possibly a month and a half. I have everything i lay/sit on plastic wrapped and i walk around throughout my house in sandles. I dont touch anything frabricated and i only have a very small pile of clothes that i am wearing. For the first 3 days, i wasn’t itching…but lastnight felt as if i got infected all over again.

The doctor wasn’t very thourough when explaining this annoying infestation.

Scabies can live 3-4 days on any surface without having a human host. (do not touch anything fabricated for 4 days!)
It would be wise to buy plastic sheets from hardware shops. cover your bed mattress, and anywhere you sit (if you have carpeted flooring, where rubber or plastic sandles throughout your house)
Wash all clothing you plan on wearing in hot water (if u have already taken the nix prior to laundry, where rubber gloves!)

Scabies has been an extreme stuggle to get arid of for me. I have broken down a few times due to it. I hope that i NEVER get it again.

I thought I I work in a nursing home, I noticed a few people scratchingand with little red bumps on them, I tried to stay away from them, then one day one of the guy resident puts his arm around my waist, I tried to inch a way nicely because he seemed to have a skin infection. At the time I was fighting a yeast infection, and respitory infection. I started itching and the doctor said he saw nothing, two days severe itching, feeling like bugs crawling all over me, all through the night. I went back to a different doctor who suspected and still didn’t see a nyhthing til I showed her the bumps on my chest, after seeing them she was pretty sure I had them.

I suspected years ago I had a bug skin infection and washed and bathed in body lice stuff and made my husband do it to the same time as me and washed everything. I was also working in a nursing home. When ever I did not work in a nursing home, those years I would be free of bug bites.

Now all because a nursing home that I work at now, a resident decide to put his arms around me, I know this is how, nobody in my house has symptoms, nobody I no are itching and it was two weeks ago when he put his hands and arms on me. I was on guard worried that he may have gave me his skin infection, since it look like he had bug bites on him and my worry came true.

What makes me mad is that he was not quarantined and he is still out close to people and about scratching with lots more red bumps on him. and he sits in the chairs we got to sit in.

It is almost unavoidable, resident just walk up and grab my hand, sometimes they go to fall and I have to catch them.

My husband is forced into one part of the house and my daughter is spending three days with grandmother and being made to stay in the same side of the house as days until my ymptoms are gone. I’m giving this a week. Tommorrow I will be bathing in sulfur soap and washing my hair with sulfur shampoo.
and every night before bed for the next week.
My doctor said lysol will work on the house.
I’m covered in the peremethin stuff and it does seem like that it is all that. I can feel bug bits while it’s on me and it has been some hours. Although it is not as much as before.

my goal is to get this bug off me in a week, or I will be making a fuss at the doctors office to give me something that actually work, I will not be taking no for an answer. It is bad enough that I have chronic asthma attacks right now, just got over phenomia, and tacacardia at times (my pulse rate too high at rest), high blood pressure and allergy attacks and now i’m itching like my body is under attack by an alien bug that is invisible.

If I feel like i’m still itching, I will be rubbing sulfur petroleum on me. I will do anything to get rid these.

I told her I know I have bugs on me, cause I can feel them crawling everything. They are are EVERY where on me.

It is true about it not matter how clean or dirty you are. Because me and my husband are very clean people and organized.

what also makes me mad is I told the doctor a week ago, thaqt I had strange itching wear my ears are, under my breast and vagina and she dismissed it saying she saw nothing, now there a bumps all over me and this new doctor says I do have scabies.

I can’t believe she tried to tell me I didn’t when I can actually feel the bugs crawling on me, like little creepy crawlers.

I notice they are trying to bit under my arms tonight, running to other places, cause the cream is making them sick.

this is the worst week of my life, worse than getting my gullblatter removed. I might have felt some pain but at least I was able to sleep without feeling like i have to bed border line over-dose with a sleeping pill. If I wasn’t afriad of awaking with my skin eating up and scratching my skin bloody in my sleep, I would take a sleeping pill.

    I scratch in my sleep!

I will pray for everyone who has this. you beat up yourself, when you fight these bugs.

    I pray you get sleep:)

I will post again and let you know what worked for me.

  124. CWL says:

I would strongly advise that you only use treatments for scabies recommended by medical professionals. Natural treatments, using substances that are definitively not harmful to the skin or body, are your choice. There are certain ones that may have some action against mites, but few will be as comprehensive as prescribed treatments. The effective use of treatment, commonly topical permethrin 5%, and disinfection of exposed items (see below) is adequate to eliminate scabies.

The scabies mite is fragile and cannot survive for extended periods of time outside of the human body. The most generous time given by medical experts is 1 week, with many such as the Centre for Disease Control stating 3 days. It is prudent to clean linens, clothing, and any other items commonly touched for extended periods of times.

If you have failed treatment 2 times, you are either applying the treatment incorrectly, reinfecting yourself, or you do not have scabies. Reinfection is highly uncommon if the treatment is applied correctly and reasonable household disinfection measures are undertaken. You do not have to steam clean your furniture, apply three pesticide sprays, purchase vinyl covers, and so forth. Contemplate how widespread scabies would be if they were that easily spread and could survive. Skin-to-skin contact, or contact with recently exposed items, are the causes.

Incorrect treatment application is often overlooked as a cause of reinfection. You must ensure you use the treatment thoroughly on all exposed skin from the neck area below. You should particularly focus on areas that have visible lesions from scabies. It is critical that hard to reach areas, e.g. webbing between hands and the genital area, are covered. If you used oral ivermectin, especially twice, the problem is definitively not treatment failure. Ivermectin is a powerful droad-spectrum anti-parasitic and those who claim to have used it many times (alongside household disinfection) without results are likely suffering from something else.

  125. Louis says:

    Good afternoon folks,

Just a little run down of my own situation. About 3 months ago I began to notice a lot of rashing either side of my testicles in the fold of the inner thigh. These rashes were persistent and eventually became intolerably itchy, and also painful (where the scratching had brought about secondary infection). I continued on with this, maintaining a healthy standard of hygiene until a few weeks after I decided that the problem could be STD related. I journeyed to the clinic for a full check up and the doctor had diagnosed me with a fungal infection. This, at the time was highly likely to be true, but of course, there was an underlying problem. The doctor presribed Daktacort.

2 weeks after the check up, I was due for a routine appointment. The legions had not gone after countless applications of the cream, although the infection region had returned to a relatively normal state, there were still red marks. The doctor again, prescribed another tube of Daktacort and sent me on my way. Meanwhile, a week or so earlier, my girlfriend (oh no) had been noticing what looked like bites, and some mild rashing particularly around her genitalia and inner thighs. We dwelled uncomfortably before having her check into the clinic too. By this time we were convinced that it was a form of the HSV-2 virus (Herpes) and suffered some incredibly miserable periods during what was before a perfectly happy healthy and sexually active relationship for the previous 6 months of being together.

Her check in was two weeks after my routine check up. I accompanied her, but remained outside of the room on the premise that the doctor may have an alterior and influence opinion with someone else present. She later walked out of the room, with her head sunk to the floor, her eyes welling up, and a look of certain doom on her face, before almost storming off with a look of resentment in her eyes. Scabies.

Acting fast, I had to march back into the clinic and advise them that I was a sexually active partner of a patient who had just been diagnosed with scabies. They managed to arrange an unnapointed session with the doctor, and he prescribed Derbac-M (as with my girlfriend). The advise offered was to deep treat your clothing, betting and other material made belongings on the highest possible setting your washing machine will deal with, and tumble dry them on high heat. This, he said should kill the mites and the eggs. The Derbac formula was to be used once, applying thickly and generously all over the body. The doctor advised not to use this on the face, however further research indicates that it is safe to do so (and rightly, as the product is used for head lice too). My level of beleif in this doctor however, was waning, as twice he had misdiagnosed the ailments and one week later I, and my girlfriend were still stuck with these pesky scabies mites.

Adding insult to injury, my girlfriend later realised that her youngest child of 4 years had shown bites on his wrists, which is a common place for scabies to start. She has a history of depression, and having gone through a divorce not so recently started again to feel the soul destroying affects of guilt, isolation and despair. As much I tried to comfort her, nothing worked. Our relationship took a serious tumble and we were apart a couple of weeks, with nothing more than bickering and arguing as communication and blame being slung back and forth. Two weeks ago, we worked things out despite the immense pressure on our togetherness and vowed to beat off these foul soul destroying creatures.

The use of Derbac has certainly helped, but there’s the continuing doubt that these things are still living in my shoes, my bed, my clothes and even still on my skin. The itching persists (though this is said to be a side affect of the actual chemical). My greatest worry, having had these things for a while and not knowing is that there is a high likelyhood that they have been passed onto other members of the household (my grandparents) whom, given their age could really make expelling this problem incredibly difficult. I have kept to my own quarters, not used any towels that aren’t mine, and continued to hot wash everything myself. Another point I will make is that despite doctors and manufacturers recommendation to only use Derbac-M once a week, I have ignored it. I’ve been through 1 and a half bottles of the stuff now, and as yet have not experienced any obvious health problems. I do not recommend this however desperate you are, but then, yes, I am desperate myself for the sake of my life, and my relationship.

A little note to everyone who is suffering this God-awful trauma, don’t give up hope. Continue to be clean, routinely mop your floor with thick bleach, clean your keyboard, mouse, television remote, door handles, PC monitor buttons etc (you get the picture). Derbac-M is available without prescription from any good chemist/pharmacy, but this stuff in the UK will set you back roughly £10 a bottle. It’s enough for 3 or 4 full body applications and does seem to do what it says it will. Don’t lose faith when you still feel compulsed to scratch yourself even after treatment. This is just the pesticide irritating your skin.

I will come back in a few weeks to let you know how I have got on, and sincerely wish everyone suffering this problem the very best of luck in your endeavours. You have my sympathy and my support if you wish to chat.

    Regards,

    Louis.

Oh, I forgot to say that nobody else in my household has had even a HINT of this. And that makes me wonder a lot. Yet, I cannot find anything online that would make me think this anything but scabies.

Also, the new rash has spots where there seems to be little things under my skin that are not red. Bumps that make my skin look all bumpy in some places. My sister said the same thing!

  127. buggered up says:

    Well I am back.
    And still buggered up.
This has been a horrible nightmare. What is really really strange is that my sister and I both have this – only she lives thousands of miles from me. I was out to visit her as I said before…my mom is in a nursing home. My sister calls me twice a week so we can compare our “progress”.

After I thought I had fixed this problem, I started getting new and different “bites”. Whereas before they were large and mainly on my stomach – now, these very small bites are on my arms, behind my knees, on my chest & neck and across my lower back. They look like ant bites now…tiny but VERY itchy and sometimes I can feel the stink of biting.

I actually went to a dermatologist 2 weeks ago who barely looked at me and proclaimed I had bedbugs. People- this is NOT bedbugs! I inspected my bed throughly and it is encased in plastic. And these bites are not like bedbug bites at all.

My sister and I are at our wits end. Today I learned about Morgellons Disease (http://www.morgellons.org/)…. holy cow that better not be it. But I don’t have those little fibers.

I did the permethrin TWICE. I covered myself with teatree oil and neem soap…. My skin hurts from all the crap I have put on it. So I decided to let it rest a few days to see if maybe I am allergic to all the crap!

This has been going on SO long now and I just cannot believe it. If anyone has any ideas, let me know! I’ll go back to the doctor AGAIN… but I feel like they are brushing me off. This is costing me a fortune. I believe I am up to at least $1,000 in doctor visits, water to wash clothes endlessly, creams, long distance calls, new pillows etc…. you name it I have done it.

    Help!

  131. SHELLbell (tired of it) says:

    [post 1]- shell
Today I was diagnosed with scabies, this is my story:

since the middle of July I have suspected that I might have it after searching online. Still I was very confused. When I went to the dermatologist in August he looked at it called it excema and gave me clobetesol topical solution. I felt a huge stress come off my shoulders, because I was living in fear of giving scabies to loved ones. Since I work at the pharmacy, my pharmacist/boss didn’t have the topical solution so he gave me the ointment for clobetesol. The ointment didn’t help at all, and when I got the topical solution it didn’t help much either. The bumps had started to get uglier, redder, and bumpier. My dad told me to see another dermatologist one that my bro & sister had gone to for their acne. So i went, and this doctor carefully listened to everything I said, scraped some of it, and then came back to tell me that he thought it may be scabies. He prescribed me some atarax/hydroxizine 10 mg since he thinks I’m allergic to scabies mite, and he gave me Elimite (permethrin) 5% cream, & triamcinolone acetonide cream 0.1 % to stop the itching. The elimite cream is the cream you put once all over from neck to toe nails for once a week. It is usually taken for two weeks, so a week from today i would have to rub my body again with this elimite cream, and then 8 hrs i have to wash it away. I put it on at 6:30 pm today (well yesterday) & at 2:30 I will take shower and hopefully wash those suckers away!
I have noticed that I feel somethin crawling inside my skin like it is moving, kinda feels tingly and ticklish. I think that means it is dying, I hope so!

When I first notice these mysterious bumps on me they were actually very very small, probably 1 mm in size maybe even smaller, and they were just slightly red, enough to notice though, and it was not itchy at all. however after a week it started to itch, and then it just got worse every week, to the point I am at now.

It is the MOST ANNOYING THING in my life, and has made me so irritated! Hopefully it leaves, and I can live normally again. Never will I take my life for granted, I just want to go back to the days without scabies. I still do not know WHERE I could have gone it, and I have not infected any loved ones, but I live in fear of doing that, and being re infested by these critters. The thought of it living in my skin terrifies me. It is enough that it has stolen my sleep, but it does cause one to feel such sadness. I think scabies are very underrated when they just call it something simple to get rid over. PEOPLE IT IS A BIG DEAL! It’s terrible. I have an appointment three weeks later, and I will come back and let everyone know whats going on with my scabies.

Hope everyone gets rid of them.

  132. buggered up says:

My journey with these buggers started in late July (it is now September) when I visited my mother in a nursing home. She had a terrible skin irritation. I hadn’t seen her for a while (another state) so there was lots of close contact. My sister, who lives there, also got the buggers. (The nursing home adamantly denies that my mother has scabies but I know they are treating her. I actually think she has the Norweigan kind-and THAT is HORRIBLE).

I started getting the actual bites about 3 weeks after I came home. I was on a camping trip and suddenly felt intense itching around my waist. Because of my mother’s condition, I had been watching for potential problems but had no idea what I was looking for. Then my sister told me she had been diagnosed with this so I went to the doctor immediately.

While I am not 100% over this yet – I have made great progress. I read this site about a week and a half ago and realized I had not done NEARLY ENOUGH to get rid of these buggers. But this is what I am doing that seems to be working for treatment of my skin and the itch:
Promethrin 5% cream – have done this twice now. I waited the 7 days between because of gestation period but I had had few new bites. I also spot treated with this along the way.
Neem Oil with Aloe Vera gel combined with a little tea tree oil – I mix these together and put it on every day. Tea tree oil stinks to high heaven so remember to use only a little bit. It smells like intense pitch from a pine tree.
Neem soap-lather up daily, let it sit and wash off. I also scrape my finger nails on it and let the soap sit under my nails after I shower. It doesn’t show at all and eventually washes out. My whole family is washing with Neem soap – and nobody else has gotten this.
For itching- benadryl gel & pills, cortaid – and the very best thing has been ice packs around my waist, where the majority of my bites are.

The biggest thing I did that really helped a lot was to visit an outdoor hot mineral spring in the mountains and sit in it for hours.

After reading this site, I also realized I had not been doing enough around my house. So I got a big plastic matress bag (Target has them) and encased my whole matress in plastic. I had already bagged all my blankets and pillows that I couldn’t put in the wash and bought new pillows. (This whole “Scabiels Extermnation Project” (lol) has cost me probably $300 so far).

I wash every piece of clothing I wear in HOT water – daily. At first I was changing my sheets daily but now I do them every couple days. I don’t use any of the handtowels in my house-I use paper towels.

Interestingly, although my husband and two sons also visited my mother in the nursing home – they have not gotten this. However, I am certain this scabies because I went to the doctor – and because I had already researched every possible bite or rash this could be and nothing else looks like this exactly. Even though I went camping and could be exposed to ticks- this is not ticks because I have many bites and small ones appear out of nowhere on a regular basis.

Also-the itch – oh my gosh I have never had an itch like this. It stings and itches and I told my sister I feel like a “Ms. Packman” game – I feel chomp chomp sometimes. It is horrible!

I also wash my hair with the Neem soap by the way.

I am glad someone posted where to get sulfur soap. I couldn’t find it at the health food store so I will go for that if necessary. I will also keep you posted. But so far, so good.

I had to post this because some of these posts frankly scared the you know what out of me (wish it could scare these buggers out of me!).

I wanted to tell you all as well that my sister bought that stuff called STOP on the Internet and developed a horrible allergic reaction to it.

I’m sure I will be back…. good luck to all of you.

  133. Scabies Extermination Project says:

As I read previous entries, I took note of what seemed to work for several of the people leaving comments about their experiences with scabies. It is unfortunate that prescription medications do not usually work. Likewise, using bleach and stuff made for horses is not quite discerning. I am allergic to flea bites so totally know what a bitter itch can be. This said, I can certainly understand going to the extremes.

I, my husband, daughter, two sisters, my sister’s husbands, their kids (5 total), my mother and aunt have all be exposed and possibly still have scabies. My husband and mother have diabetes and definitely need to be careful about getting scores infected. Our problem for the most part has been re-exposure to these awful parasites. We live in separate households and every time we visit each other the cycle starts again. I’m really not sure if I itch because I’m anxious about the scabies or because I have them. The truth is I don’t want them. I hate them! I’m ready to kill them all. Like I said I’ve taken notes and based on that, I’ve placed an order for some of the stuff mentioned. I will post again to update my findings. This will be the Scabies Extermination Project.

I got these little guys and man did it suck. I went through one tube of pemethrin cream and did not get rid of it. I shaved my entire body and soaked in a bleach bath and put the pemthrin cream back on. I was no longer itching two days later. I’m a hairy dude and I don’t think the cream was making proper contact with the skin. Shave your body and then apply cream. As for the bleach bath I’m not sure if that helped or not but did it any ways.

Well ..I have to laugh and cry because just reading everyone’s comments finds a little of me in every one..Yes I’ve been told I’m crazy by my kids, husband and doctor. I’ve been alone battling these bugs for 6 months now. I’ve cleared up then I get reinfested again because I know my grand daughters have them. They are not showing signs yet and my daughter refuses to talk to me about it..Now I know the dogs have them too.. I see with a magnifying glass little sparkles in the sunlight on my arm and black dots. Wondering if anyone sees them also.

I’ve been using neem oil and dabb permethrim in new bumps found. What helps me sleep is the neem oil and steaming my bed and pillow.. I bought a steamer and steam everything as they do not like heat. I’ve been using borax on the flrs and vacuum too.. My problem is the big mites I live with (family) nobody belives me..I’ve had scabies yrs before so I knew instantly what I had, so I bought some cream right away, now the doctors mad and won’t help me even tho I put a scabie in mineral oil to look at under a microscope. Yes there have been a few nights where a few glasses of wine helped the depression.. I’m driving to the next town maybe a doctor will look at my specimen. Hopefully then everyone will get on board and believe their crazy mom. ps I steam my shoes and it helps..

  137. Betty says:

OK – Everyone who is battling this, I know it REALLY is tough – our family got infected from a visiting house guest (Yeah, that one is off the list for life!) – we kicked it but it takes TIME and EFFORT. Most failure with the creams seems to be from not applying it all over your body, you have to get everything below your neck with topical creams. After a few false starts, this is what worked for us – we ordered a supply of 10% sulfur cream (de la cruz Pomada de Azufre) and Sulfur soap directly from Alivio Vital in California, online. Got 4 bars of the soap and 12 2.6 oz jars of the cream for about $58 I think. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ENOUGH, the time it takes to reorder can be enough time to reinfect. Use the soap at least once a day (with a scrubbie, it lathers up to the consistency of shaving cream, leave it on for 5-10 minutes while you clean the inside of the bathroom or dance around or read a magazine on a shelf).

I found the long scrubbies with rope at each end (from our local $ tree store) helped get your back if nobody is around to do it for you. I kept a few sets of long knit cotton pants and tops as house clothes for the duration – after rinsing off in shower and drying, apply the cream all over your body and put on the cotton clothes. I did this for a week, I had a really bad infestation especially in my legs and lower back, after a week I put cream only on my legs and if I felt any other itchy spots, and after two weeks, no more itch but I still put cream on my legs once a day (before then had reapplied at night before bed). I was fortunate to be able to work from home, but even when I went out, I was able to wear loose clothes and didn’t have a problem with stains. I would not wear anything tight. The first 4 days are the worst. You do not need to apply the cream heavily, just a light amount like moisturizer, but get it all over. I continued to apply daily for two full weeks after all symptoms gone, in case there were any remaining eggs under my skin. The whole process took a month – unpleasant, but nothing compared to the four prior months when we could not get correctly diagnosed and were itching like crazy. Good luck to all.

  138. HealthyGuy says:

    Barryg,

Mites do not breathe through their mouth. They breathe through little holes in their body. Hence, understanding this concept is the key to eradication.

After taking a shower, oil up your entire body twice a day with a vegetable oil, like olive oil, before going to bed and after waking up. The mites will smother from the oil clogging up their tiny breathing holes when they attempt to walk on your body.

It is also just as important to scrub under your fingernails and toenails with an old toothbrush four or five times a day. This is the only place they can hide if you are oiled up everyday. I recommend getting some oil under your nails too.

Follow this advice, make sure your bedding is cleaned daily, and you will start seeing improvement in a few days.

  139. kassidy says:

is it possible that you get it seasonal?

  140. barryg says:

Hello again, Unfortunatley I am still not clear, it must be a good two years now. Although I believe I have reached a sort of equilibrium. I keep researching and have picked a 12 bucks microscope. I don’t get the spots and rashes very often, but tend to get more crawling sensations under my skin and some sharp needle type pains, and localised itching. I think I never let it get to the stage of break out. Since I know the mites to live on me I have stopped boiling my clothes before washing. I still do daily maximum wash of my bedsheet and all clothes, I never wear anything twice and it goes straight into the washing machine ready for the next wash.

I tried three months at a health club, daily swimming, saunas, jaccuzzi even sun bathing but the problem is still there today.

I am back on the vinegar and gloves regime, daily mopping and vaccuming. I still use the sulfur as it does seem to reduce the symptons and clear some areas, sometimes.

Now the interesting part. My scabies I believe is the complicated type, as referred to by some doctors, although my last visit the doctor referred to my problem as delusional, so I continue to self care. Doctors say wash hands before and after eating. I noticed after I washed and dried my hands a few seconds later some tiny objects would extrude. I looked at these under the microscope and found them to be elongated but full of tiny fibers appearing in a formed pattern as if some form of cocoon, bonded by some sticky substance. I theorised and decided this must be the eggs as they didn’t move. The individual fibers looked exactly like the cotton fibers close up. Also when I apply vinegar to my hands these same items pop out, and the symptons reduce. I don’t think the adult mites pop out, and probably spend the entire life cycle producing these eggs that grow under the skin unless sort of extruded out, hence the itch cycles when the mites is moving about.

On one day i felt gentle bite like a tickle on my finger tip, I saw a white pin point size blob slowly disapear into my skin and then felt the sharp biting activity. I tried vinegar but it would not come out, sulfur, alcohol etc. However i kept the vinegar and sulfur and after a few weeks the discomfort was gone and during this time after the vinegar rub there would be a few white fiberous objects and always of a similar shape. So tiny but with the 100x mic I could always see the fiber bundles.

I did have one experience when I felt a sharp sudden twinge as if something big had popped out of my finger tip. I think it must have been an adult. After this there was no more pain on that finger. The other thing I have noticed is when I place my infected finger tip on my skin for a few seconds I start to feel activity in the finger as if something is going to come out, if I move my finger away and activity stops.

My conclusion to this is if we can find something to dissolve these fibers then I reckon we can kill the mites too. I know sulfur helps, but the mite on my shoulder muscle was there for at least 6 months, it must have gone really deep, but with persistent washing and treatment only a few eggs matured to make a home on another part of my body. these mites have lived in my ears, eye lashes, nose, as well as every where else, and I really mean every where.

When i feel an itch the alcohol pretty much stops it straight away, but the mites are so clever they can hibernate for days and days with out activity, hence I try to keep problem areas saturated with some form of cream. I usualy mix a little sulfur with my various moisturisers, because my twice daily showers seem to be stripping my skin of essential minerals.

Now I am begining to get an understanding of what is going on, I can keep searching to find something that will get deep enough into my skin to kill the mites with out damaging the skin, I think with bleach for my case my skin would burn before it reached the mites, and since the mites can shut off it would not be worthing risking. I might try the diatemous earth, although it is only a surface agent.

One day I hope to report I am clear and will share my solution because this is such a horrible way of life.

I have been battling scabies for 4-months now since my 5-year old brought them home from school. We have done the permethrin 5% treatments 4-times with the exception of the baby …he has only been treated twice because the Dr. doesn’t feel safe reapplying him more than that because he is only 11 months old.It started out as just itching in my 5-year old and it continued for weeks with no breaking out.I assumed it was dry skin so I was spending loads of money on expensive lotions to apply to her skin. Then I started breaking out in what I thought was spider bited on my stomache. They continued to worsen as the days went by ubtil eventually i lokked like I had the chicken pox.The bites scabbed over and still were very itchy. My husband works out of town so when he got home he was itching very badly but only had a few tiny pin prick looking scabs on him.It went on for about another two weeks thinking now it was the detergent I was using .I finally said enough is enough and took myself and my daughter to the Dr. They took one look and said you all have scabies!!! I freaked out completely! The 10-month old had developed blisters on his feet by now so we took him the next day and sure enough he had it too. This has been going on since March my husband seems to be better and my daughter except for itching every now and then.Me and the baby are another story…I have never stopped breaking out even through all the 4 treatments of permethrin …The itching subsided for about a month and I would only get a few bumps here and there but as of three days ago the itching is back and so is the breaking out.The baby now has what looks like insect bites all over his stomache and back. Can anyone PLEASE help me I feel like I’m loosing my mind with all of this.I feel horrible when I have to apply the permethrin creme to the kids because I’m afraid of what it can do to them.

One more thing, I am in my sixties and have learned a few things.

Itching stopping is not a indication of being better, it only feels better.

ANY oil, cream, lotion that stops AIR from reaching the itchy spot will relieve itching. But these to not kill mites. (mites are survivers too!)

unless of course you submerge yourself in oil in a bathtub for three days, but you could die too, as your skin has to breath too. you might smother the mites and yourself.

Slather yourself down in olive oil at night to get some sleep.

    take care all.

  145. Bonnie says:

I got scabies from my sister who is in a nursing home. I was told by a nurse not to report them to the health dept because if the home was shut down everyone would lose thier jobs, and my sister would have to find a new place to live. I passed it to two friends (not so sure I have friends anymore!)
I threatened (well mentioned that a friend told me to sue the home) but I have no medical proof, and the nursing home policy is that the scabies could come from almost anywhere! But they had dome a punch biopsy and told me she did not have any. NOT TRUE. and stupid me sat on the edge of her bed, the itching started on the outer side of my thighs, which was closest to her in the bed.

After I mentioned the word “sue” they found a new PA and started her on Permethrin cream and Ivermectin once a week for four weeks, then three times a week for three months, then twice a week for three more months. She has been so miserable, she has a degenerative brain ailment that makes it hard for her to understand. But she has been itching for months, I would go in and they would say ” I haven’t seen her itching, I could see her from the nursing station, rubbing her back against the wheel chair.

Now I am on my second pair of permethrin treatments, the friends passed it back to me after the first treatment. I do have the $12 microscope, and I expressed one mite out of an eruption before I did the treatment, she suffered some damage being popped out of the small crater in my skin, lost some legs, but clearly was what we have pictured here. And clearly seen by the naked eye. Not identifiable, but clearly a tiny white hard lump.
The person who said they become like golden raisins was right, I have (four days after the elimite stuff) seen several surface today. I put them under the scope, the first one was just a golden clear blob, but the second clearly (and this is only 100x enlargement, no high power necessary) had a “mouth” area and the remains of a leg.

I even found some hanging on my skin, carefully pulled them off, not easy, and they lost more parts, but were identifiable as mites.

I am worried about my sister, due to her brain being compromised already, having a reaction (not measurable by any means) to so much ivermectin. She may just become more confused, (which the home will attribute to her gradually degenerating cerebellum (sp.) but her quality of life with the itching had to have some help.

My self, I am still having bouts of itching, and looking forward to the second treatment. I talked with some people at the Center of Desease Control, they have a 72 hour away from clothes policy, not sure that could be long enough. insist on hot water to wash, which I do not have. I have been using bleach in the wash water, and setting them on soak for over an hour before continuing the wash.

I make things with fabric, and am very worried about the yds and yds of cloth being contaminated. But leaving that room shut up for a week. and praying!

I am so glad this forum exists, it makes me feel a little less crazy.

It takes a microscope to identify the mites, but not to see them, or the golden clear hard husks of thier dead bodies.

Please be kind to each other, we are all trying to survive this horror.

i agree with the bleach baths, they work. another remedy that worked for my family is diamateous earth. it kills scabies and other pests by drying out their bodies. since it isn’t a poison the scabies will not become immune to the treatment. it can be bought at a hardware store for about $10.00. wear a face mask and apply to your body, reapply after bathing. it may itch your skin but you will kill the scabies that lurk on your dermis. you can also apply it to a dust mop for tile or wood floors. it can be applied to car mats and inside shoes.
my only question is how do you know when you are cured?

I just had a doctor (who I went in to see about recurring foot pain after a broken bone last year) diagnose me from ACROSS the room with scabies.
    Can this be correct??
I have been having recurrent insect/spider bites averaging at least one a day since November 1st. The initial bites were raised with 2 puncture wounds in the center with a whitened skin portion about 1/2 inch in diameter and reddened skin with slight swelling extending up to 5 inches in diameter on my arms (one on my trunk was 5 by 17 before I went into the ER and was diagnosed with cellulitus and put on oral antibiotics) with intensive itching relieved best by ice, but also benadryl, atarax, and calamine lotion. I had 2 other visits to the ER for cellulitus – one in each hand before the end of the year. These wounds ended when I killed a spider living on my desk – caramel colored with metallic yellow spots.
I received other bites – I believed to be bites from common house spiders – had at least 50 in my laundry room. I was told my wounds could not be from spiders because they commonly only bite once – and was brushed off when I said I entered and left the area at least 40 times a day and was disturbing the spiders. I even brought in samples.
The first team of dermatologists said that they could not tell what the bites were (emergency appointment took 10 weeks) but that I had extremely sensitive skin.
Subsequently I was determined to be Vitamin D deficient (taking 50,000 units a week cleared up most of the itching and reactions).
After another outbreak, I was seen by another team of general doctors, dermatologists and infectious disease specialists. General consensus was some sort of attenuated (extreme) reaction to whatever was biting me. Cultures were taken. No MRSA, no staph, no mention of scabies.
More bites – this time red conical swellings that itched and had a single entry point. I started finding little flying bugs the size of a grain of short rice – like a skinny unbloated tick. When mashed they were filled with blood. We fumigated the house. Within 2 weeks most bites ceased.
Afterwards found that all but little brown spiders were dead.
It has now restarted – but looking like mosquito bites this time – but with a persistence of the welts and some itchiness for a week or so – instead of the 18 to 24 hours for a mosquito bite (this is with antihistamine treatment).
The newest doctor dismisses my comments about the differences in the bites and says that spiders do not bite more than once so therefore I must have scabies. No one else in the house has this problem – or my allergies.
All bites have been only where the skin is exposed (arms, legs, hands, feet, neck, face and gap at the trunk sometimes). When I wear socks and shoes, long pants, long sleeved shirt, latex gloves and Deep Woods Off – no bites at all.
No itching at night at all – unless a bite appears.
    How can this be scabies????

    hello everyone,
well i have had scabies for about 3 weeks now… i have done the permethrin treatment…but it was only 1% lotion…but it seems to be working… well at least im not breaking out in hives any more… let me tell you i almost went to the ER because of the hives i was having… then my mom told me that me and my brother had scabies when we were little..(that would have been nice to know about it or what it was awhile back) but anyways…she kind of told me what she did and how she got rid of them… so what i have been doing: i went online to Web MD (really good place to get info on scabies and treatments that you can order) so got this treatment called ScabiesKiller… which is all natural no chemicals no rashes or burning…. Tea Tree oils and other stuff like that OH and helps with the itching…. and it comes with Slufur soap which really helps…

then i went to walmart got Equate Bedding Spray which has 50% of Permethrin in it…(get a lot of bottles because they not that big) when you get it spray everything!!! floor, Beds, couches, car…EVERYTHING!! then vacuum… a lot… wash all your cloths and bedding in hot water…. any clean clothes that are in you dresser throw in dryer for 30 mins and put back after you do the treatment… the treatment i have i had to keep putting it on like 3 times a day which really sucks but it helps… so every time i came home from work i would do the treatment then change into clean clothes i washed the day b4 and then wash the clothes i was wearing again… a lot of work but it is working…. and now im still itchy but from what i was reading i will feel that way for awhile… AND another good thing to do is have everyone that is living with you do the treatment… yea its going to be hard for them to do it cuz they dont think they have it but it takes about 6 weeks b4 they start itching and rashes and hives…. and let me tell you i have been telling my roommate to do cuz i am not going to get reinfected cuz of them… they keep saying there not going to do but now they are starting to get itchy all over and bumps and stuff….soooo…now they are thinking of doing it….

OH and another good thing to do is take some benadryl that will help with the itching and knock you out so you can get some sleep!!! i have been in so much suffering for the past 2 and a half weeks and the steps i have taken are seeming to work… but now im an insomniac now…but i have some sleeping pills to help with that now…well that’s my story and some info and advise so hope it helps anyone who reads….

Last year, I had scabies for 5 months. I got it from a close friend, who had been diagnosed with it but was too embarrassed to tell anyone what it was. It began on my hands, fingers, palms, webbings of my fingers, then on my toes and webbings of toes. At first, I was diagnosed with poison ivy and treated for it. Obviously didn’t work. As time went by, it began to crop up all over my feet, bottoms of feet, ankles, legs, knees, wrists, and stomach. The itching was absolutely treacherous. I would stay up all night, miserable, scratching my skin raw into a bloody mess. My doctor kept treating me for poison ivy. It got to its worst in the months of summer, and hiding it was impossible, and rumors began to spread at my work that I was a drug addict. At this point my legs, ankles, feet, wrists, and hands were visibly covered in giant bloody scabs. I was working at a grocery store at the time, and the low point was when a customer stormed up to one of my managers and informed him that there was an employee with “a disgusting rash” and demanded that I be sent home.

My boss was obviously really nice about it and told me that he was really concerned about whatever my rash was, and told me to get it checked out as soon as possible and just to keep them updated, and I was sent home for the day. I went to the ER immediately and was promptly diagnosed with scabies. Unbelievably mortifying – the doctors treated me like I was some kind of filthy disease. I was given the cream, which burned wicked bad, continued to itch for a few more weeks, finally the pain subsided. Unfortunately, I was left with some very ugly scars that looked like large dents in my skin.

I would not wish this on my worst enemy. It was an extremely painful, miserable, and humiliating experience. Just reliving this experience right now is making me feel paranoid and itchy. Ahhhhhh!
